skyrim cut content:what it would have been

Post » Sun Mar 16, 2014 5:02 pm

i am somewhat new to the forums,so greetings everyone.

I've played skyrim for quite some time and finished almost every quest out there in it,yet i could not help but to feel there were things that felt unachieved or too short. let's take the civil war quest line for instance. it felt rather dull. but did i felt there things that got cut off ? definitly

and my feelings became true when i saw this:

http://forums.nexusmods.com/index.php?/topic/898097-has-anyone-thought-of-addingrestoring-cut-in-game-content/

this topic on nexus mods makes it clear:there has been some what important content that got cut out. but what would the game have been if this content wasn't cut ? just how much the experience would've changed.

(off topic:what mods are there that restore the cut content ? and should i reconsider replaying the game once that's done ? i never used mods with skyrim apart of the UI modifier so yeah...)

thank you everyone and take care

your fellow TES worshipper

There's Arthmoor's Cutting room floor which I would recommend.

...a little late. It doesn't touch the Civil War though but it adds some nice small bits.

WHAT ?! was that really planned ? wow that would've been awesome. giants may not be the smartest people, but that shouldn't make them bad or aggressive, but talky and stuff, kinda like trolls in the witcher 2.

If I could have befriended Giabts as a Stormcloak I doubt I'd be as lro-Imperial as I am now. :P

But that suggests that the Empire must have been able to recruit someone or something just as awesome. Like imagine if the Empire gave you a mission to capture Falmer and unleash them in Stormcloak territory!

Would have loved to have seen an arena in Windhelm. Although perhaps it's better that it stays as it is, I mean we can't really expect it to top Oblivion's now can we? Such nostalgia..

Also would have liked to have seen Winterhold as it should have been. :stare:

-sighs- i miss the imperial city's arena, such great memories -sniff-

and what do you mean by "Also would have liked to have seen Winterhold as it should have been"

does that mean it was supposed to be different ? bigger maybe ? or even have an arena :stare:

Well Winterhold recently collapsed into the ocean. It was once the capital of Skyrim, the gem of the North.

Cut content is the price you pay to have bad voice acting instead of text based dialogue.

I think it's a really bad tradeoff, but there's a whole generation of gamers who have grown up with full voice acting, so it's pretty much seen as a must by most AAA developers.

or maybe the devs were simply too lazy or out of time to do it right ?

sometimes i wish the game came out on 12/12/12 instead of 11/11/11 like some have said. -sighs-

Oblivion's was fun, but I think it can easily be topped with a better combat system in place and more lethal opponents.

It would've been interesting to see what the other arenas in Oblivion would have been like. There was originally going to be one in every city, but they had to cut them out because the dialogue was taking up too much disk space.

err no

voice acting is not necessary true. but does it add to the experience? most definitely !

i've played plenty RPG's: from gothic,to kotor and TES, you name it. if i had to compare oblivion and morrowind,i'd say the voice acting the thing that makes oblivion a winner.

that's a damn freaking shame ! they even hinted at it in the game,by saying that kvatch had it's own arena.

Text based dialogue has several huge benefits:

- It's cheap. Budget can be spent on making other areas of the game a lot better.

- It's a lot easier to edit, which generally means better quality writing as well as a lot more modding possibilities.

- It takes up far less space, so you get a LOT more content in the game overall.

- More is left to the player's imagination.

Voiced dialogue has one huge benefit with a big fat BUT on the end of it:

- Greater immersion, BUT only when done well. Using the same actors for lots of NPCs does more harm than good. Bad voice acting does more harm than good. NPCs spurting out the same simple sentences does more harm than good. A complete lack of dialogue options does more harm than good.

agreed. i played morrowind and it was fun experience. however,a game with good script and voice acting are a killer. sure not all characters get a fair treatment, but when i look at the witcher series,it's just great. (some NPC's have annoying voices though). voice acting cannot be needed at all the game is done in a very immersive way, with an exciting story and some good soundtrack. like the Ace Attorney series

in short, voice acting is a big plus if done right as you just stated

so yes,voice acting

Nnno... the established lore has clearly stated that Winterhold collapsed into the ocean. All the dialogue and such talking about the fall of Winterhold (pun intended) probably took almost as much time as would have actually making the city.

I don't believe that for a second. I honestly think Winterhold was rushed, and that whole Great Collapse thing was thrown in at the last second. Not to say that the lore behind the Great Collapse isn't cool and all, but it certainly doesn't make up for the lack of an entire city. Take Savos Aren for instance, you can only ask him like two questions about it..

Well what can you really get the desired amount of detail about?

The fall of Winterhold was the result of the eruption of Red Mountain. Seeing as Winterhold is close by (geographically) and sat on a plateau that is on top of a cliff face which are unstable at the best of times and if you look around is clearly subject to fragmentation. Also, the violent seas are definitely not helping, and seeing as the Sea of Ghosts is seen as the most dangerous naval passage on Tamriel, I can see why. Building Winterhold where it was was as logical as building a town on the coast of Whitby or Kent.

I'm pretty sure it didn't depend on you being a Stormcloak to be able to recruit giants and bandits. Just imagine besieging Windhelm with an army of giants. Fantastic. What a shame.

The lore behind the whole thing is brilliant, but it's still an excuse. All of the reasons you listed are exactly why they felt it the perfect excuse to save time by throwing it in.

And that Kent/Whitby comment is a little too high-brow for me?
