Skyrim "designed for 360"?

Post » Tue Aug 10, 2010 10:33 am

Just curious, was this actually stated? I've seen quite a few people say it (myself included, foolishly following the crowd), but where did this information come from?

Yes, it has been stated by Todd Howard on more than one occasion.

Skyrim is being designed primarily on the 360. However the PC version will still have some unique treatment and in many respects the game will still feel more like a PC game on all platforms rather than a console game.

Good.

I really don't want my PC (which I paid a lot of money to make awesome) to have graphics that don't look any better than 2005 technology.

Thank you; I feel much more reassured. :)

iirc, it's also been stated that all of the screens and videos released thus far were captured on an Xbox 360.

I'm sorry, but I put a lot more time, work, and money into my PC than I did my Xbox.

It's a case of "you get what you paid for". My PC has newer, better technology than an Xbox, so the game should naturally look and feel better.

The game footage so far has been captured on the 360. We can assume that PC graphics will have the option, perhaps, to be somewhat more detailed than even this.

Also, of course the game is being designed for the 360. Any smart game company would design the game for the least capable platform that they hope to market to, then just add bonuses for anything beyond that.

I've heard that, and it is another reassuring fact.

If it looks that good on 360, imagine the PC graphics. :D

Skyirm is being designed for all 3 systems. The only thing that's being designed for the 360 that will probably be subjected to the other 2 consoles is memory size due to the 360 being the weakest of the consoles.

Well.. yeah your PC will look like 2005 technology basically. Todd only said the PC version will get AA (obvious is obvious here), higher resolutions (obvious as well), and higher res textures (he didn't even want to say how hi-res; it could be as "hi-res" as Oblivion's or Fallout 3's textures). That's it.

AA will help with jaggies but it will still look like something based on 2005 technology, sadly.

That's graphics only though.
Luckily the PC version is now getting a UI designed more for them, which is warmly welcomed.

I don't even have to upgrade my PC for this one, maybe Deus Ex 3 will force me to, but if Skyrim runs on Xbox, it runs on my 2 year old pc too.

Yes, but, game developers are not required under any semblance of logic to cater to your platform. You bought an expensive PC, the question now is whether or not you can even use it. If game developers aren't making games that utilize that capability, maybe you wasted your money.

That's not anyone's fault but yours.

I've heard that the graphics are rendered on the 360. I don't think it's fair to say that it's designed for the 360 though... I think they just design it to be playable on as many systems as possible, without the game turning out crappy... (hence there is no wii version)

Reagardless of what's "stated," I always wonder this: If the Creation Kit only runs on PCs, and is what the game is being built with, how by any stretch of pretzel logic is the game being designed (using PC software) on an Xbox?

I think that xbox developers get a creation kit that computers can use but that helps them to code and convert "for" the xbox. It's not being done "on" an xbox, but with an XboX kit on a pc.

Just because the console itself came out in 2005 doesn't mean the graphics haven't advanced. Just look at the difference between Oblivion and FO3. Anyone who seriously tries to say that Skyrim looks like it came out in 2005 is a fool.

Don't worry about it. Xbox games circa 2005<2011 in terms of graphics. Dx9 has come a long way, and even though it isn't going to push your pc to the limit it's still going to look good. I suspect they want to make the best game possible on all platforms, so I have faith they will do this. Even if it's not the BEST overall, it will be compared to what they've put out so far.

This, while I wouldn't say Oblivion and FO3, but a console game that came out in 2005 and this year.

Right, but people keep saying that they're holding the technology back so they can release on more platforms and therefore make more money... if that were really true, they'd dumb down the game and put it out on the wii too... which isn't happening.

Not only are the graphics going to suffer, but the user interface and the controls as well.

I'm not saying you're wrong, but how exactly are the controls going to suffer?

The number of people that think this game is "supposed" to be designed for them, and that they are somehow being cheated if it is not the way they want it, is staggering to say the least.
