Skyrim DLC - PVP Arena System

Post » Fri Dec 02, 2011 3:13 am

Firstly I just want to say Skyrim is an awesome game and thank you Bethesda for creating it.

I have had an idea pop into my head regarding Skyrim or any other future Elder Scrolls games for that matter. This idea will probably fall on deaf ears, but i'm ok with that. I will at least throw it out there and it would be interesting to see if it gains some support for my opinion.

Prior to Skyrim coming out I crammed a number of hours into Dark Souls and yeah really enjoyed the difficulty of the game and its unusual pvp system. After playing Dark Souls one thing that appears to be missing for me in Skyrim is the online pvp play. I am not suggesting that Skyrim should be an MMO (even though from what I understand its something that is on the cards but is currently riddled with law suits), or that pvp should be implemented via an invading system, but it would be great if the game had a pvp component in it i.e. something like an arena system.

The arena setting, if identified as being the best option could be in similar setting as the arena in Oblivion, but would work by players signing up with a battle master and be summoned into an arena to PVP.

As far as making each class fair all players once inside the arena will be scaled to base level evenly with regards to damage healing etc and could maybe be matched up according to gear level (rather than player level) i.e. someone with a basic iron set would not pvp against someone in a full dragon set and issue a +1 or a -1 for winning/losing.

As far as rewards that could be gold, rare items etc.

You can all see where I'm going with this.

I am curious to everyone’s thoughts so please feel free to offer your opinion.

TL; DR:

Do you think Skyrim via DLC or any other Elder Scrolls game in the future would work well with having an online pvp arena component to it as a mini side game to the main 1 player gaming experience?

No, wont happen, can't happen and likely will never happen for TES.

Why?

Well it won't happen in Skyrim because of technical issues.I'm no expert on that subject but form what I do know it would be a fair deal of work.Plus Todd Howard has expressed his feelings on the subject already. He would rather make the single player games Bethesda is doing and has no interest in adding multiplayer.

Personally I'm fine with no MP, that's not what I play RPGs for, especially not Bethesda ones.

Any form of multiplayer content in a TES game would ultimately lead to its downfall. go play fable. this is an extremely bad idea. The game is not meant for multiplayer and bethesda should never introduce it. It would absolutely destroy a TES game

I too just put down Dark Souls for Skyrim and I too loved the pvp, since Demon Souls actually.

But IMO it just wouldn't work. There's too many similarities between different people's characters, even if the system forced players to use specific gear. You know there's a vast difference between Dex, strength, intelligence and faith builds and their go to tactics in a pvp match. In Skyrim there's no strength requirements for weapons etc so everyone could use them if a certain weapon proved to be OP in pvp.

Biggest reason in my opinion is the lack of combat options in Skyrim. In DS you have the ability to two hand any weapon with a light attack or heavy, backstabs, parry and riposte attack, running attacks, jumping attack, backstep attack and a out of roll animation attack. That and the ability to dodge/roll is what creates the viability of pvp combat. Without all those different options pvp would simply become a contest of who can do the most damage the fastest. IMO there would be very little skill involved.

How does multiplayer ruin a game? Just don't play it if you don't like it!

I love RPGs, but I have friends who I would love to share the experience with. Why is it that RPGs can't have any multiplayer or they aren't RPGs anymore? What's different about it? Why is the game suddenly bad? Most games hire a completely new department to work on multiplayer, so no resources get diverted.

God you anti-multiplayer people are seriously annoying. Just don't play it. Problem solved.

Thank you Logan, I agree. Wish others would see it this way.

Meh at the end of the day if its ever added fantastic if it isnt, its no big deal. Once I am done with the single player expierence (not any time soon) I will more than likely jump onto another game, rather than hang back and pvping with friends/randoms.

Sounds awful. And how exactly would something like that be implemented in DLC? Has a multiplayer feature ever been added via downloadable content?

Did you miss the part where we are debating the viability of Player Versus Player in Skyrim. You can't just generalize it as MP. I never said I wouldn't support co-op, in fact I would love to see co-op. But pvp flat out would not work in Skyrim without major changes to character building, if you have an idea of how it could work, please share. Don't just come shout at everyone because we disagree with your opinion.

But again Todd has already stated that it will not happen, period end of story. So there's no reason to get soo worked up over the issue.

It can never be done right, because of modding and custom content, there can never be any kind of online without sevearly limiting the game.

this and his sig

Edit: Any type of official release focusing on PvP would inevitably lead to throngs upon throngs of people calling for "balance" and "OP"(its a single player game and people are still doing it) and gamesas would have to waste precious manhours to balancing things so that PvP would be somewhat enjoyable, so no not a good idea.

Of course resources get diverted, they don't have a magical bag of money to pay for a whole new development team.

I play TES games because they are single player, plenty of other games out there that will cater to the people who insist multiplayer should be in every game.

No the problem is not solved. Doing MP would take assets, assets that me and many others would prefer to see used on the SP experience.

This thread has been derailed.

The original post I put up was purely to discuss pvp in a controlled environment i.e. in an arena setting (as a side minigame), not MP as seen in MMO games that would deter from the SP expierence.

Thread closed thanks.

Even if PvP isn't available I think it would be cool if they added an arena where you can fight AI characters who have their own armour, weapons, perks, potions ect. I remember playing Kingdom Hearts when I was younger and the duels/tournaments in the Colosseum were my favorite part of the game. It would be good if you could fight harder opponents as you go through the duels/tournaments and receive some kind of tokens (or special coins, ect) to spend on cool rewards.
