Skyrim doesnt.. sound great

Post » Fri Dec 16, 2011 10:30 pm

The music for instance- It never realy seems "right" for the moment. It comes in too late often and it just isn't dynamic enough!

The menu music is to slow, unlike morrowind and oblivion i dont get a chance to listen to it. It's still nothing in comparison to rise of the nerevar (it would be better than oblivion's music if not for the long pause)
Oblivion's main theme is exiting and morrowind's main theme is probably the best theme music for a game that i have heard (tied with deus ex) It actualy sends chills through me! Skyrim's main tune just does not inspire me. It's not terrible it's just bland.

Look at amnesia (pc only) an INDIE game that was successfull purely because of it's sound. It's graphics svcked and water looked flat yet you gained temporary hydrophobia when you played!

The creatures in the game sound boring and uninspired. So do the spells and people. Don't get me wrong- i hated the voices of nearly everyone in morrowind and oblivion and in skyrim and nearly everyone sounds pretty decent! But nobody sounds INSPIRED! Skyrim has scandinavian nords and american elves and "up themselves" high elves and British theives and imperials (what are bethesda trying to say?) But morrowind had actual DUMNER voices and Long and peacefull stilt strider moans and cliff racers and fake-weird-yet wonderful spell sounds with lovely explosions everytime a fire spell hit something! It had Nice swinging noises and satisfying hit noises that compensated for the poor animations. Skyrim's sounds are just so.. mundane!! More realistic maybe.. yet so booring!

Your poll is biased on many levels.
Make it evenhanded and more would see it as an actual poll.

Just a thought.

The setup of this poll is abysmal.

This poll is a little sad.

But I voted in good faith. The only one of the poll questions I didn't rate Skyrim as well in or better was the Dunmer. They had pretty charactuful voices back in their homeland. But perhaps getting away from all that ash and enjoying the brisk, Scandanavian air has cleared their throats.

All other Skyrim sounds are excellent.

All of my choices were the most popular.

Ask me anything, for I am correct.

Not the best of polls, can't believe some people think Dunmer sound better in Skyrim than in Morrowind though. Whoever does the voice-acting for Irileth and some other Dunmer sounds more like a tranny than a 'Dark' elf.

Morrowind - Simply breathtaking when you first hear it.

Skyrim - Sound effects for everything, even horses shaking their heads...

Skyrim - I just love the way they look. If Morrowind had better graphics, that.

It's timed well - On the way to do last DB mission, dragon attacks *epic music* I go up to the guy who has caused me so much trouble and strife, and while this epic music is playing he says "oh god... you!? How could it be you!?!?" and I one handed finish-move him into the sea :D

The sound design in Skyrim wins by a landslide in comparison to the other TES games. :brokencomputer:

I do think that the music engine is broken. I often fight a dragon with peaceful exploring music, until he is at 5% health, at which point it swaps to boss music for like the next 10 minutes, even long after he is dead...

I think that if Morrowind had fully voiced dialogue the smoker's voices would get a little annoying to hear. (As if "Speak Traveler" wasn't bad enough )
But as it was there just for a few phrases, I voted for Morrowind.

Voices are great. Hell, I even liked Oblivion voices. Okay they sounded a bit "dumb" but I think that's part of RPGs, and still a lot less dumb than our own feeble attempts in dice times. Oblivion kinda reminded me of those times, even if they failed feeling "realistic". Still, I now prefer Skyrims slightly more realistic approach than fantasy approach.

Sound design is generally very good, except I hate these tiny loops. I'm a sound guy myself, and in other engines for ambient loops (outdoor, we don't have indoor scapes at all, luckily, because I would find that hard to design sounds for :)) I can use 30-120 second loops for the variety it allows (mono spatialized sound effects come on top of that, like birds, trees creaking in the wind etc).

A couple of places I've found where the sound area is badly defined, but no biggie for a game this size. Well done on this one.

My biggest gripe is with the sound engine itself. Meaning, it's nothing the sound guys can do anything about. Like how it appears to be completely zone based with way too fast crossfades that feels completely unnatural. Don't they know how to mix sounds (yeah, I know it's actually a bit more tricky than most realize), or is it a limitation that comes from the consoles (my game is PC only)? Like, go from tundra to snow and the sound changes in a few seconds. Or how the environment fails to affect sound. In the mountains, I'm getting howling winds no matter what, but there may be nothing else suggesting wind at all.

As for music, I don't use it because I don't want to get "alarmed", so can't really have an opinion there. And i don't vote in ridiculous polls.
