Skyrim's Dungeon Scaryness level

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 6:48 am

1. Disable Night Eye or make it cost an arm and a leg's worth of Magicka to use.
2. Make Dungeons really dark.
3. Put traps everywhere.
4. Add a ton of Undead enemies.
5. Proceed to crap pants.

Now amirite or amirite?

4.b. haunting sound design
4.c. insert Necromancer or similar faction with backstory, character dialogue and quests that are actually scary
4.d. overhaul ghosts, undead to make them actually scary
4.e. remove any enemy NPCs talking shop about mudcrabs from dungeon
4.f. more cramped, claustrophobic caverns, esp. where you must sneak past creepy enemies that can easily kill you

4.5: Take a hint from MMM and let some undead reanimate and surprise you from behind, when you thought that you have disposed of them. ;)

Small cracks in the walls and "small" untargetable ambient spiders disappearing in them as soon as you light it, stuff like that would be great and increase the scare factor to a much better level

I picked the scariest option, but with one caveat - I want it to be scary based on creepiness and an eerie atmosphere rather than things jumping out at me. I REALLY hate that stuff in games. Doom 3 got to the point where it was annoyingly predictable: "Oh look, there's a dark corner over there..." :glare:

I feel the same way about horror films as well. Psychological terror trumps startling thrills every time. Slasher films are more a kind of comedy, not really so frightening.

favorite movies of all time:
THE SHINING
ROSEMARY'S BABY

The Descent was great because of the sense of claustrophobia in the caverns and the scenes where the heroine must some how escape in the dark from these disgusting inbred creatures just inches away from her.

I never found any dungeon in the ES games to be scary. They don't need to be. However, the sounds in the Daggerfall dungeons were a bit eerie.

scare factor adds a lot to a game -> particularly immersion. If dungeons were like that, I'd be totally focused on what was around the next corner -> wondering what horror awaited. Oblivion lacked any kind of fear based immersion IMO, so i hope they implement it in Skyrim

I like dungeons alot, but I'd be sad if all of them were "lovecraftian", 'cause to be completely honest the Dunwich Building in Fallout 3 scared the [censored] out of me.

Now I don't mind a decent scare, I watch thrillers and horror movies when I feel like it, but being frightened of descending into every single dungeon would probably become tiresome.

I voted some like the video, some like Oblivion. I'm game for the occasional wander in the dark, but it's going to piss me off if I have to go into every dungeon smacking into walls like a survival-horror game.

Well, in Skyrim we now know you can get caught in spiderwebs, whereas the animation on your character will react accordingly. You'll be trying your hardest to get out, while a very large spider, the size of a boulder is coming from some direction, (roof, or down the dark hall filled with Draugr) to eat you. Sounds pretty scary if you ask me...

If you lose a light source in non-lit dungeons, you should need to rely on your map to make it out, wandering in pure darkness, possibly stepping into a Spider's web or hidden trap at any turn.

I never really found Oblivions caves and dungeons to be all that dark. Some of them were creepy and had me on the edge of my seat for sure, but not dark. I never needed to use a light spell or even a torch to find my way, there was always a glow which gave me enough light to see everything. I'm running on pretty standard light/brightness settings I think, cause if I turn them down so the caves get darker, the days will look really weird and dark too.

I hope they make caves dark, like i pitch black, unless there's some kind of light source. I want to be forced to use my torch, cause otherwise I wont.

Oblivion's caves and dungeons were quite dark for me. Not necessarily scary though. I always had to use a torch to get around. Maybe some of you should adjust your lighting.

OK so perhaps there are two of you who want hello kitty dungeons.

Glad you are so tolerant of opinions... No. I don't want "Hello Kitty" dungeons. I don't want dungeons that resemble Amnesia. I don't want dungeons that could have come out of an HP Lovecraft novel. What I want is Skyrim dungeons. I don't care much for things jumping out at me, nor do I play these games to psychologically scare myself. Besides, you are playing the role of a person given power from the Gods themselves to defeat the entity that wants to devour the world. Why on earth would a character like that ever feel helpless? It's just totally out of place and unnecessary. If you want a game like Amnesia, go play Amnesia or find a game that has already established itself in a similar way.

Oh, and by the way, I actually did like the dungeon in the video, so thanks for assuming that because I said that I must have voted for the Oblivion option...
Also, you should probably changed the word "gloomy". Gloom has nothing to do with fear. Like, Auschwitz is a gloomy place. It's not really scary though (anymore at least), like to walk around in. Unless of course, you are using it in the sense of darkness. But again, that has nothing to do with fear.

The only thing that was scary in that video was the character's face.

Ehm, anyway. Some dungeons should be scary, some should be fun like Tomb Raider dungeons and some should be like Oblivion. In other words, a nice balance.
Although, Oblivion's horrible lighting is a no go.

Oh, forgot: Voted Lovecraft style dungeons. Nothing like creeping around every corner in anticipation of sudden death. I want to be spooked and be on the edge of my seat, actually leaning to the side to try and look around corners =P

Skeletons by far had the scariest voices. Since there was no sound depth, a skeleton far down in the dungeon would be screaming as soon as you got in...it always scared the crap out of me. :P

In terms of dungeons being scary...sixth house bases always scared the bazoinkers out of me. I had a bad experience in stumbling into a base called http://www.uesp.net/wiki/File:MW_Map_Assemanu.jpg, in which you fall into a pit, and if you have intervention spells or levitation spells, and you save while in the pit like I did, you're pretty much trapped there forever. This made me feel like if I ever enter a sixth house base I will be in serious danger. Not to mention I found dead ordinators down there too -- guards that I couldn't even kill. Don't even get me started on the lack of (red) lighting and creepy looking monsters.

I think some dungeons should be scary and others should not. Each should tell a story before anything, though.

I think a mix would be appropriate; I'd expect fear in Skyrim to be closer to awe than psychological terror - "this monster can crush me to a pulp" awe, rather than "it jumped out of a cupboard in an abandoned mental ward and I couldn't quite tell how nightmarish it looked oh gods it's still here" terror.

But in some dungeons (perhaps those populated by undead), spooky lighting (or lack of lighting), sounds, etc could really add to the overall atmosphere.

Exactly. Survival horror would make no sense at all in Skyrim considering you will be as powerful as a god (I'm assuming you'll beat Alduin). I want to be like excited scared. Sort of like a motivational fear.

Lovecraftian, hell yeah!

I'm not actually joking. I would love to be scared to hell, and those spiders seem to do the trick :D

I don't recall there beeing an option for hello kitty dungeons... If I want survival horror I'll play another series than TES.

Or even Minecraft, it has its moments :D

You don't start out as a God, so why wouldn't you be able to be scared? You can roleplay any personality you want, including one who scares easily, but in the end overcomes the odds to save the World. Pretty much like any movie you've ever seen with a 'save the World' theme.
