Skyrim's Dungeon Scaryness level

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 12:46 pm

While waiting for the HUB update, I was watching Oblivion videos, and while I was watching http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oGdAFEgyY-c&feature=related, I just remembered how amazing those type of dungeons are (and how amazing Dungeons of Ivellon mod was), and I was wondering if Skyrim will have at least a couple of those nice pitch-black dungeons, where you must depend of your Light spell or torch as much as of your sword, in order to survive.

For my part, I've voted "some like in this video, and some like Oblivion". I really like those kind of dungeons, although I don't think my nerves could take too many of them...:)

Oblivion's dungeons pissed me off. Seriously, no lighting sources at all. Just a bunch of crappy ambient glows placed without logic and lots of volumetric light. :glare:

I thought Oblivion's had an eerie and dark atmosphere.

With caves not being gloomy, and nights not even being black?

Uhmmm...no :) I'd say true "eerie and dark" are dungeons like the one in the video.

@Seti I found them eerier than Morrowind's, but overall they could've been darker in my opinion - or at least dim. I think one thing that added to Daggerfall's atmosphere was that all of the dungeons were pretty much uniformly lit. There was no light at the end of the tunnel, nor warm, recognizable well-lit "atriums". Just an endless, fuzzy 320x200 nightmare.

I'd say a bit of both...depends on what kind of dungeon: an old cave or an old ruin? A hideout or a religious cult base? Or perhaps abandoned? I hope the liches aren't as annoying though...

None of the Elder Scrolls game's dungeons have been 'Scary'.

That one redefines scary.

I hope Skyrim really has some scary ones. Like double what happened at the Dunwich buidling of Fallout 3. This type of fantasy RPG's lend themselves better for this kind of occult, otherworldy stuff since the world they're living in is supposed to be largely unknown and threatening. Since the world's stuck in a kind of medieval era with limited technology and knowledge apart from magic. Like Lovecraft minus the modern setting. There are supposed to be less rational ways to account for what's happening in the world and why. Everything unknown in more primitive societies is often perceived as fearsome, terrible, supernatural and (un)divine. A metaphysical nightmare. Oblivion is way too bright. What worries me is that Skyrim will be as happy clappy and there will be no sign of a dark tone whatsoever. That would be the biggest turn-off to me.

OP, I miss the vote option Lovecraft scary or something alike. Scarier than what we've seen in TES. True horror. If you add it, I can vote for it, please.

Added. And I share the same worry, but I think it's irrational. Skyrim is going to be darker and more "mature" than Oblivion, I'm sure of it.

I agree.. lightning seemed to be coming out of invisible light sources.

On topic, anyone know how they went with dungeons/underground in The Witcher? The places were almost pitch black, you had to take cateye potion (sort of light Night Eye) or have a torch up to see anything. I think that really elevated the atmosphere. I once went in without either of those and it wasn't pretty when ghouls started coming at you out of nowhere.

Thanks. :thanks: Voted. Or you could say: "Like in Amnesia". Now that's truely bloody scary. I just watched this vid of Kitoro and although these guys are so hilarious, it's equally recognizable because I crapped some pants myself there. :nope:  :pinch: :ahhh:
I hope you're right about the darker and more mature part. Giant spiders do promiss some good scares and screams. :woot:

To Infiltrator: yeah, imagine that in first person! :ahhh:

I'm shooting myself in the foot here but Lovecraftian would be amazing, but fighting a giant spider would be terrifyingly -Mr flabby jaw, water monster- scary to me anyway.

I have a dog/wolf phobia and I′d really love if there was like a cave you entered and then could not go back outside from where you entered, and if it had like this wolf growling and not running but slowly walking towards you with just enough light to see the reflection of its two glaring eyes glittering in the darkness.

Or something like that, would bring a good dimension of scary into the game :D

At LEAST Minecraft scary.

If you've ever fallen into a spider nest unexpectedly you'll know what I mean...

Go Lovecraftian!

Hope there are some Lovecraftian monsters to go in 'em, though. Masses of flesh with thousands of gaping maws and twitching eyes..

If you have life detect and night eye, there is no scariness is dungeons anymore... so I recommend to go without those two *cheats*. Pants need to be changed quite often then.

I just hope every dungeon is different is some way. That's one thing I disliked about Oblivion. Everytime I talked with someone about it I couldn't say, the one with the really awesome stuff. It was more like "The one with a needle ceiling." That's why Dragons will be a great addition to this game. "Bosses" in the dungeons were never really bosses.

As for the "scare tactics" type stuff I hope some dungeons are like Dead Space type style. Imagine a dungeon where you are constantly fighting your way through and just when you think everything has died, you go into the next room and it's all dark and not even a light spell or torch with light the darkness, or your torch get's blown out (you hear heavy breathing) then two large serpent like eyes appear and the dragon opens it's mouth, illuminating the whole room.

In other words.. Please make a dungeon with some "Oh Crap.."

Haaaaaa Lovecraft !!!
Even if old in concept , the underlying terror is still fully there.

Make them scary if they have to, at minimum make them unsettling.

Well the Ayleid ruins had an eerie feeling to them, they could've been darker. Once you got the mod to turn off the ambient lighting, they got nice a spooky.
