Skyrim environment?

Post » Thu Oct 22, 2009 7:38 pm

Does anybody know how the Skyrim environment will be like? I mean, apart from just snowy and mountainous?
Will there be any grassy areas? Fields? That aren't covered in snow?

I'm not really sure what the lore says about this, so that's why I asked. I think there really should be diversity in the environment. Morrowind had a very nice such one.
But at the same time, it shouldn't be too unrealistic. I mean, Skyrim is ... north.

Perhaps a solution would be to have really advanced seasons? Causing otherwise most snowy areas to be grassy in the summer? Then again, I have no idea what's the engine's like, and if it can accomplish this. Although I think that if it could do this, it would be purely awesome.

Boreal forest biome, possibly with some tundra, cold deserts, and temperate grasslands. Alternatively, it could be the rarer temperate evergreen forest biome.

And remember that habitat changes with elevation as well as latitude. In other words, the further up the mountain you go, the more cold-tolerant species you're going to get.

Frankly, I think the devs should invest in an Ecology course to aid in their understanding of how to create a believable and diverse range of habitats. Rather than placing trees and creatures willy-nilly, the devs will realize that the abundance and distribution of species does depend on factors/guidelines (rules of thumb).

Something like a mash-up of Siberia, Kamchatka, the Himalayas, Alaska, and the grasslands of the mid-west USA.

With any luck it'll be done somewhat like Solsthiem, where we have a variety of grass, pine woods, plains, plus have huge areas covered in tons of snow with ice glaciers. Hopefully, (and most likely) a lot more mountains though.

Man I can't wait for some screens.

If there is indeed a non-frosty coastline, it would have the potential to look awesome, IMO anyway. Looking out into a large expanse of water with massive snowy mountains towering over you gives me an epic feeling of the environment.

Vast tundra, pine forests, river rapids, frozen lakes, cold coasts, green valleys and brooding snowy mountains. And lots of ruins and dungeons. Hopefully.

I agree that seasons would be ideal, at least a winter/summer variation.

A lot of these links are taking me to pictures that look like Cyrodiil. You guys, this isn't Cyrodiil. It's north of it, arctic, mountainousness.

Skyrim isn't arctic, it's just cold. Coniferous trees, rocky post-glacial terrain, that sort of thing. Really, seasons would be the best way to handle it. Mild summers and harsh winters.

They definitely need flowers for the bees to make the honey, and a growing season to grow the grain. Combine those for the mead. They have seasons.

If it was all snow, all the time, how would the Nords farm? Hunting and fishing doesn't feed a nation.
