Skyrim & Eurogamer's Positives and Negatives

Post » Mon Sep 26, 2011 1:13 pm

Here are the translations from a eurogamer about Skyrim:

  • Falls from height causes less damage than before. Jumping from a high rock, which would result in death in Oblivion , does not cause any harm;

  • I think that this would be a positive for a game like Skyrim. Jumping from a high rock would not necessarily have a high potential to kill you but it has a high potential of crippling you.

  • Underwater strips were showing stock breaths. I played the north, and stayed under water more than a minute, but the indicator on the screen did not appear. Furthermore, neither the health nor the stamina diminished by the long stay under water. Surfacing, Dovakin loudly breathed air;

  • This could be considered both a positive and a negative, because in reality when you are swimming your stamina is decreasing as you hold your breathe under water; once stamina is depleted fully then the health should deplete rapidly. But this would be good for players who love to take advantage of underwater exploration, but I would think that this ability to breathe freely in water would specifically belong to an Argonian.

  • Animation swimming, apparently inherited from Fallout 3;
    UNDERWATER similar to those that we have seen in Fallout, but it looks much worse;
    According to the playing, swimming animation looks worse than Oblivion;

  • This is pretty worrisome for me because I have played both Oblivion and Fallout and swimming was not a satisfying aspect of the game. I hope the Dev Team does some work on this because I am hoping a good amount of the game is going to involve lots of land and water exploration. This most certainly would be a negative aspect in the game.

  • Killed the shop owner, then, without removing the sword, went into a tavern nearby. Everyone who was inside, attacked me with cries of "murderer." I think this happened not because of what I have not removed the sword, and because of that the murder was committed literally next door;

  • I would have to say that this is a positive assuming that the people in the tavern next door knew Dovahkin committed murder, because they heard screams and saw the blood on his body. But, supposing if you received this same reaction from a tavern further away I would consider this to be a negative. As an explorer in Skyrim you will be fighting many creatures and people and blood will get on the body from anything or anyone. I am wondering if the blood can be washed away by a nearby river that would be intriguing.

  • Opening the door nicely animated;

  • Well, this a tidbit of good news to hear but not a big deal though.

  • Physics is as bad as in Oblivion: a player a shot at the basket with the cabbage, cabbage and flew above the roofs of buildings;

  • I remember the physics in Oblivion, and I would not dare to see it in Skyrim. Although, I am very impressed with Skyrim's graphics I dont want the game creators thinking I do not care about common sense. I really hope that If I shot an arrow at a piece of glass that it will not just fly like a bird and bounce off walls without shattering into pieces.

  • In the forest, came across a funeral ceremony, led by a priest orke;

  • Ok, I love this because it shows that Skyrim is not just about honoring those that are alive but giving honor to those that have passed away. This is a new step in immersion. I am just wondering if crashing a funeral in Skyrim will be as awkward as crashing a funeral in real life.

  • During the attack on the Imperial guard, I was fined 40 gold in the region Folkrit for murder - 1000;

  • It would bother me somewhat if all guards are alike in Skyrim and care more about taking a fine than the actual murder itself. There has to be at least a few that really take offense to murder. If you killed close friends of a guard do you really think that he would accept some change for his friends' lives.

  • In the game there were three levels of difficulty - Novice, Acolyte, and Adept;

  • I never really cared for having separate modes of difficulty in a game. I always expected for things to gradually get difficult in a game without my choosing and sometimes have those sursprising moments where I am overwhelmed by stronger individuals. If having control is your forte then this would be a positive for you gamers out there.

  • Animation jumping improved, but still not perfect;

  • Acrobatics is gone but now we have jumping its not a huge take away. Pretty much in Oblivion the only acrobatics was jumping no flipping or tumbling really. I hope that the jumping improves though and becomes less rigid and more fluid.

I would like to read thoroughly typed explanation of how you felt about some of the things listed above.

Come on man, there are literaly 15 - 20 things that they needs to fix since June. Do you really think all of it is gonna be change for the release?

Do you think none of it will be fixed? 15-20 things since 4 months ago is a lot? Here's a quote from Gstaff for you..."keep in mind this is the same build we used for PAX... we made numerous improvements since."

They've long since started fixing and polishing. Truth is we won't know until 11.11.11. I couldn't care less about anything that isn't a game breaking bug.

Yup. June build.

Also, when I used two healing spells in both hands, their wasn't one healing sphere in the middle, there was two on each hand... Unlike the one Todd Howard showed in the demo.

Well I hope your right. This isnt just small things but things like; re-texture of water, re-animation on jumping, weapons needs to make contact on opponent when attacking. This is just some of the things that require som time to fix.

Oh, and AI has already been improved. Forum member Sammii said "Stealth is actually a lot better than seen in the demo when the NPC's are given a couple seconds to react. Two Bandits in a cave, one walking down the same pathway as me, facing away, and another walking along an adjacent catwalk above but further back. Shot at the one on the first floor, missed -the eye opened slightly, #1 shouted what was that, then #2 shouted down asking what the problem was? #2 ran down and #1 ran up, so they met eachother halfway and then stuck together, checking the place out and investigating the area the arrow came from with weapons drawn, the eye opening slightly."

@TzTopp What's wrong with the jumping animation? I saw footage of it and it looked great.

One remark: I have read that there were five levels difficulty, from Novice to Master.

That'll be subjective of course. Someone will like it, someone will not. I thought jumping looked great and there was a thread on it and everyone else that saw it said it looked good except for one person. You're basing you're assumption of something you haven't even seen.

If there was an auto-responder with "^This" as an option, I'd setup a rule for it to reply to pretty much every post made by Dragonborn1. Carry on.

Just back from Eurogamer and here's my input...

First off falling off high thngs DOES kill you - at least it killed me when I did it.

Combat feels more immediate and involving - you can feel when you connect with a hit.

Lockpicking looks gimicky - but it works well.

No dragons! - didn't see a dragon in the demos the whole weekend.

But overall - it plays well and I can't wait for it to come out.

Nearly 800 hours between June - November of 'work time'. I don't see why the issues can't be addressed.
