My Skyrim Fanart, Thread II

Post » Wed Sep 07, 2011 2:14 pm

Thank you! :) I feel I'm progressing with every picture I do. I started 2 years ago with digital art, with not much skill before out of the box. My first attempts were pretty horrible...I guess I just have to stick to it.

Having started only 2 years ago (and assuming you're not settling for where you are now, and still pushing you skills) then you've made AMAZING progress. Keep up the great job.

I can't speak for the other person, but I think for myself it's really just personal taste. The first one seems more real, like you could reach in and touch the world. You almost feel like you are there, and the environment is very much more prominent. In the second one, the environment feels less present, less obvious. She stands out much more against the background, whereas in the first one the subject is nearly unified with his environment.

I don't really know the right words to describe what I am trying to convey. I'd say the first one depicts a scene, a moment in time, whereas the second one looks more like a focus on a particular character. Of course, you might not have had any intention of giving them the same feel.

Personally, I think both are very good, and far exceed my own skill. But still I think I like the first one the most as well. It just looks better, and I can't really describe why, at least not very well.

Ah, yes. I see what you mean. The scenery and lighting are very important in the "Son of Skyrim" picture. It was a conscious decision to dial that back a bit on this one. I didn't want as dramatic lighting - and I also wanted to do a picture with brighter colours. So the overall mood is quite different on the new one.

Wow, they're both really great, kaio. :D I checked out some of your other drawings too, and I just want to say they are amazing! ;) Great work! And I hope to see some new drawings soon!

Could you try to explain why it's not as good? Something to do with the technique or just personal taste? Thanks :hehe:

Well I would write it off as personal taste since most of the time I don't know what I'm talking about but I'll critique it anyway if that strikes your fancy.

  • The colors are a lot bolder. Makes it look more cartoonish.

  • It appears that there is a blizzard going on all around her yet she has no trace of snow on her body. Kind of detaches her from the environment.

  • The way she's standing is a bit "Look at me; I'm right here!" if that makes any sense.

  • It clearly isn't a Skyrim Bosmer though, obviously, you must have started it before the preset faces were released.
I would have waited or done something we had already seen like an Orc or Khajiit.

On a better note, you did her skin very well, the fire spell looks good, and the motion blur you put on her cape / the snow was a nice touch. Her hair also has great detail. Not to mention those briasts but... uh... I digress. :ermm:

Looking good! I actually prefer this one to your first one. It looks more polished and has better edges.

I'd take a look at the anatomy of her boobs and torso in general, there's a couple weird things going on with the underlying structure that, when fixed, could make it even more realistic. I love how you handled the nose and mouth, though - those are tough areas, and I think you did a great job.

Cool work dude! Love seeing some art on the forums. I agree with Lady Nerevar that the anatomy is throwing me on the woman.. her briasts are looking a little wobbly and flat (flat as in not rendered to appear three-dimensional, nothing to do with size..)

The Khajiit is cool too, though the lighting on his fur (dodge and burn?) is looking more metallic than it should. Hair isn't a conductor and so the highlights shouldn't be additive in terms of color (they should be desaturated compared to midtone.) Plus the bicep on his left arm is about twice as long as the other and throws the proportions outta whack. But it's just a speedy and definitely conveys a cool character with a cool attitude.

I shouldn't have colored it, looks awful, heh. It's been like a year and a half since I've spent any real time on a digi painting, maybe I'll get inspired to spend some more time on more fleshed out fanart at some point.

Not to [censored] on Kaio's parade but that looks freaking awesome in my opinion. Loving the artistic style to it. And the colors are great!

edit: Ahh, almost forgot my little Khajiit Speedpaint!

You've done some nice work. :goodjob: How fast was your speed paint of the Khajiit? You should work on an Argonian next if your planning on doing another piece. :hubbahubba:

Thanks everyone! The criticism really helps me getting better! The kind words are nice, too, of course :D

The Khajiit took about 1 hour. Veeery quick.

Since a few people asked on my process, I threw together a quick video of the steps for this picture:

You can see what kind of a dilettante I am, making things up as I go. Next time I'll get some screen capturing going, so I could give some more insight :)

Hey guys. Being an artist myself, i couldn't wait to contribute to this thread!

It was a little rushed so don't be too critical

Wow, these are great! I especially love the picture of the khajiit, believe it or not. Just looking at his very well rendered, captivated expression I begin to tell myself all kinds of stories of his background. Art like this really gets my imagination going. Just great stuff, just great. I hope you art carries you wherever you want to go, be it into bethesda's art design studio or beyond. :ribbon:
