My Skyrim Fanart, Thread II

Post » Wed Sep 07, 2011 1:56 pm

Hi everyone! :hehe:

Maybe some of you remember my first Skyrim fanart, "Son of Skyrim":

http://kaio89.deviantart.com/gallery/#/d3eo8bo

I posted this here a few months ago and it was even put on the official Elder Scrolls Facebook page. My old thread here was closed due to post limit, and I didn't want to open a new one with nothing new to show. So I waited until I finished work on the next piece.

It took some time for me to do another one, simply because I'm still a newbie and self-taught, and these kind of pictures are mind-twisting for me. :bonk:
The new picture is called "Daughter of Valenwood" - to keep the tradition of the names :D

For the "behind the scenes" video go to: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bzb5iT_CBJ8

Obviously, it's a female Bosmer. It's loosely based on a character I played in Morrowind once. She's a battlemage, with long blade and fire spells. I know that this isn't like the typical Bosmer (you probably would imagine one with a bow...) ;)

I'd be very happy for any kind of feedback, critique or whatever you want to post. Thanks!

Cheeeeeeers!

edit: Ahh, almost forgot my little Khajiit Speedpaint!

Both are quite excellent. :ribbon: :trophy:

May I request a beautiful view of Skyrim in the background with a group of adventures fighting a dragon next? :P

Seriously though, I am really quite jealous of your talents. I wish I could draw even half as well.

Having a background in art, I'll say that your work isn't yet at Bethesda caliber (or other AAA game developers). However! Don't let that discourage you. Your work is definitely very good, and I think if you work on progressing your techniques and practices (as well as your artistic studies), you could very well get there in relatively little to no time.

And digital art is a hard thing to get into; very few places which teach anything structurally or in-depth.

Thanks everyone! Feels good to hear your kind works after working on it for such a long time! :)

Damn, still good... but not as good as the first.

Could you try to explain why it's not as good? Something to do with the technique or just personal taste? Thanks :hehe:

Thank you! :) I feel I'm progressing with every picture I do. I started 2 years ago with digital art, with not much skill before out of the box. My first attempts were pretty horrible...I guess I just have to stick to it.

The second one is less detailed than the first one.

Unfortunately, this thread will probably be moved http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/forum/31-elder-scrolls-artwork-and-fan-fiction/

But amazing art. Really good job. I don't suppose that I could use Son of Skyrim as my avatar?

I can't speak for the other person, but I think for myself it's really just personal taste. The first one seems more real, like you could reach in and touch the world. You almost feel like you are there, and the environment is very much more prominent. In the second one, the environment feels less present, less obvious. She stands out much more against the background, whereas in the first one the subject is nearly unified with his environment.

I don't really know the right words to describe what I am trying to convey. I'd say the first one depicts a scene, a moment in time, whereas the second one looks more like a focus on a particular character. Of course, you might not have had any intention of giving them the same feel.

Personally, I think both are very good, and far exceed my own skill. But still I think I like the first one the most as well. It just looks better, and I can't really describe why, at least not very well.

Depends on how you define "detail" :hehe: With this one, I did work with smaller brushes to get a lot more going on with the armor patterns. Maybe overall there's less "things", I agree on that.

Of course you can use it. I spoke to a admin some while ago about the fan art threads, btw - they are okay in the Skyrim section, as long as it's clearly about Skyrim. And I think both of my pictures are. :)

Pretty cool artwork kaio, the composition and directional lighting on the Nord is great.

I assume you work digitally? What tablet and software do you use?

Seriously. You've got real talent. This and Son of Skyrim were probably the best fan art I've seen so far.

Cheers! Yes, I work completely digitally. I use a Wacom Bamboo tablet and Photoshop CS5.
