Skyrim fans help me!

Post » Wed Sep 07, 2011 11:18 pm

So I'm a huge fallout fan and have been for 3 years. And everyone is always like play oblivion! And I know it's basically fallout but old times with shields and armor, and midevil. Well I've seen the trailer and let me say that I am freaking impressed! But here's the problems, I'm not to big in the "slaying dragons" and casting spells but it looks legit. Second problem is whether this story goes off oblivion and whether or not I have to play the other games to get the story.

So tell me what you think I should do, get it or not.

"Yes sir"

Explained: Like you, I was a huge FO3 fan and thought TES was meh. I bought Oblivion, loved it and now can't wait for Skyrim (and I changed my mind to TES > FO).

If it follows previous Elder Scrolls style you should be able to pick it up and play without needing to play Morrowind or Oblivion or any other previous TES game. And you don't have to cast spells and slay dragons if you don't want to :)

You should get it, and give Oblivon - and possibly Morrowind - a try to immerse yourself into the world of Nirn and become familiar with it.

However, they are not required to get into the story of Skyrim. Each Elder Scrolls game is a stand alone story that separates from the others, like, you never play the same main character in each Elder Scrolls. On the other hand, there are some cross-over references found in each game that relates to the previous Elder Scrolls and that is always nice to come across if you've played the other ones.

Story doesn't go much on Oblivion, you play a completely different character, in a different region and with a different story. It depends on why you liked Fallout 3 though, as to whether or not you should get the game.If you liked it because you like to roam around in an open-ended, non-linear environment, then yes you should get.If you liked it because "OMGlolololololgunz", then no, you will be disappointed. Also Skyrim is larger than FO3 and has considerably less violence and cursing.

If you have played the Elderscrolls games like Daggerfall, Morrowind, or Oblivion than buy it. Hell if you just played Fallout 3 then buy it. If you love open world sandbox games then buy it. The people who voted no are just mad [censored] or just trolling and need to get off the forums since they do not like the game. Hey and Skyrim will have 10x the content as Fallout 3.

Each Elder Scrolls game stands on its own, so your not having experienced its predecessors makes no difference in gameplay. In fact, it seems the devs have made it easier than ever for a new player to delve into it with great speed and facility. But if you want to get your fill of the history of Tamriel (which I promise you is very, very rich) then you will be able to read to your hearts content with the 300 books scattered throughout the frigid world of Skyrim. Besides, this is one of the freest, more exploratory, beautiful games you will ever play. Its depth if beyond all of our comprehensions. The world is so vast that you could play this game literally for 500 hours without experiencing all it has to offer. If you want one of the best $60 purchases of your life, you will by TES V: Skyrim.

Amen.

You certainly don't have to play the other games to get the story.

I can't say whether or not you'll like it. I'm curious if you will. Certainly, you're more likely to enjoy this than previous games like Daggerfall or Morrowind.

And honestly? I find it a little upsetting that the game is flashy enough to appeal to people who aren't traditional fantasy fans. That might sound snobbish, but nobody wants to see elves in COD, why should we tolerate "on-rails" gameplay and shooter mechanics in what is a landmark RPG?

Frankly, if the game doesn't alienate the most casual of players, it will begin to alienate the hardcoe ones. Not out of any elitist ideals of "liking it before it was cool" but simply because in order to attract those new players, older, more complicated or esoteric features will be shed.

There certainly are ways to make the game appeal to a wider audience...I myself do enjoy the more "action oriented" nature of ES games compared to turn based ones. But I wish they'd match that with some old fashioned nerdiness. These games should be for people who like to read, who like history, who've grown up wanting to be knights in shining armor rather than football players. I'm not saying there's no room for growth, but it shouldn't come at the expense of the origins of the game.

First off, each TES game is stand alone. The games are set in a linear timeline, but each game has it's own storyline. You don't have to play the other games to understand TES, or Skyrim.

Secondly, if you liked Fallout, there's a good chance you'll like TES. They are similar in many ways. The armor slot system, perks for Skyrim, etc.

Third, you don't have to cast spells if you don't want too. You can play as a Thief or Assassin style character, or a Warrior. You also don't have to slay Dragons if you don't want too, as Dragons are a part of the main quest, and you can choose not to do that if you don't want too.

that's one of the smallest reasons to get it. Believe me, once you play some of the previous games in the series, you'll love the Elder Scrolls

In response to Seahorse. Well I can understand where you're coming from but, People who love elder scrolls games love them because how open they are, everything else i think is secondary (don't mean not important) to whether someone likes the game or not. I didn't think i'd like fallout 3 because of guns and and the setting being a wasteland but i was quite surprised when i got into it. New people are paying attention to it but i dont think that shows that the game is losing anything as much as that there are/is new types of players rising now. I'm not sure if i made any sense here. The game will still have everything we like about the series.

*edit* OP, there are differences between fallout 3 and elder scrolls game, mostly how stats and everything are used, but they're taking stats out of skyrim and just focusing on three attributes, health,stamina,mana/magicka. as well as skills, if shooting spells doesn't interest you, you never have to do that. you can use 1h weapons/2h weapons Bows, each with their own perk trees and upgrade them to match your playstyle. There are other perks out of combat trees but since we don't know much about them i wont spend more time talking about it. if you liked the amount of quests/progressing of your character in fallout 3 and the open world, all of that will be improved in Skyrim.

Skyrim story occurs 200 years after Oblivion's, so it's probably the most newcomer-friendly in terms of lore to date.

If you REALLY don't like Oblivion, I don't recommend Skyrim for you. If you've only played the fallout games, you are missing out on 9/10 of the rest of BGS experience IMO
