Skyrim's fonts - what do you think of them?

Post » Fri Aug 12, 2011 9:59 pm

What do you think of Skyrim's fonts? Are they bad, good, or something in-between?

Do you think Skyrim's fonts should be changed before the release? If so, to what and why? Feel free to give examples of pictures of fonts that you think Skyrim's should look like.

When talking about fonts, I'm referring to all fonts (in HUD, UI, etc), because they generally have the same style. If you dislike/like something about a special font that you think is unique, then just explain which one.

Here's some pictures of Skyrim's fonts:

2. Main menu: http://oi51.tinypic.com/sncwus.jpg
3. Skills menu: http://cdnstatic.gamesas.com/akqacms/files/tes/screenshots/SkillsMenu_wLegal.jpg
4. Items menu: http://oi54.tinypic.com/2lc1lhv.jpg
5. Skyrim font (not the same style as the others; just posted here for "nice reference"): http://www.justpushstart.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/Elder-Scrolls-Skyrim-Changes.jpg

I think it looks fine. It's a clear and nice font that's good for the eye (imo). Not a fan of unnecessary complicated fonts.

My first impression of the in-book font was that it was kinda generic, but I think it is OK. :foodndrink:

I think they're alright. They're functional; more elaborate gothic type fonts don't help readability

I really don't mind the font but if they could change it I'd like it more than what it is now. I'd like it to be more fantasy type font but still readable. Not like Oblivions where it's too mashed together even on my 720p HDMI cable.

I think it looks great and it will work really well, it looks like they chose those fonts because they are very readable in 720p and look very clear at smaller sizes.

If you take the hud screenshot for example, where it says Level Progress, there could never be text that small in Oblivions font, the edges of all the letters would smush together.

I personally think they look fine in general. There are some specific cases though that I think should be changed, for instance:

1. The big HUD font here: http://oi56.tinypic.com/2w71xtg.jpg
I would want it smaller.

2. The UI here: http://cdnstatic.gamesas.com/akqacms/files/tes/screenshots/SkillsMenu_wLegal.jpg
I would want a different style that looks more... "fantasy like" (but still easy to read). I think that would fit better with the skills menu, which is very beautiful by the way.

Other than that, I think it's fine.

Disgusting.. The fonts need to be in 'script' and at least 16% larger otherwise I may think twice about buying the game.

Lol, seriously we're scrutinising fonts now?

Change magic to tech or shields, that could be a screen from a Halo rpg, as far as I am concerned.

It's a shame Skyrim is using yet another generic medieval font for their RPG...oh wait they're not! Thank goodness I say :D

On a more positive note I love the new way the map and skill tree and even the way you can look at the 3d objects but maybe they could add in a paper map too? Just in case I want a more rp appropriate way to navigate.

I personally don't mind the font. The only part of the HUD I dislike is the compass at the top of the screen.

Other than the size (too big in a few places), I don't have an issue with them. Clean and neat, as it should be.

i like that it's big, too many games have small fonts just for hd tvs, as a sd tv owner i applaud the big font usage :celebration:

I can live with everything except the text messages which pop up below the compass. That's mostly because of how big and intrusive they are, but the modern font certainly makes it worse and gives it more of a arcadey feel.

Dont like them except for the ones in the 5th pic. Their style suits Skyrim better. Others dont suit Skyrim at all and arent medieval/viking enough and are quite boring in general. Also theyre way too big for the PC at least.
