Honestly I think it'll be between skyrim and mass effect 3. Whichever turns out to be the better game will win.

Isn't the title of "game of the year" rewarded to about 50 games every year?

Skyrim will get it though, just as morrowind and oblivion did.

And Arena and Daggerfall, there is a main game of the year generally acknowledged as THE GOTY, there are lots of imitators thoguh

I think its gonna be between Skyrim and BattleField 3, since both seem like the BIG evolutionary sequels and massive undertakings rather than smaller/quickly-made incremental sequels like ME3, Gears3, DragonAge2 and UC2.

You're going to get a ton of 'yes' votes obviously, but there are going to be some amazing games coming out this year, and it's going to be very close. So I say maybe. If Bethesda can learn from their mistakes with Oblivion, they might make one of the best RPGs in recent time and could get GotY.

Riiiiight, because Oblivion didn't win GOTY or get a Metacritic score of 93, right?

Someone's definitely going to give Skyrim a GOTY award.

Seeing as we know very little its impossible to say.
But Bethesda does seem to have a track record of quite a few GOTYs.

Its between Skyrim and Mass Effect 3. Both are big-name sequels by the two biggest Western RPG makers (Beth and BioWare), so it's gonna be close.

It's going to have some serious competition with Mass Effect 3, the Witcher 2, and as much as I loathe to say it probably Dragon Age 2 as well.

I never said Oblivion didn't get GOTY awards now did I?

What I AM saying is that Skyrim needs to be a better sequel than Oblivion was if it wants to get this year's GotY award. In all honesty, 2006 wasn't really a good year for gaming save for Oblivion and Company of Heroes. Oblivion while still a great game is an incredibly flawed RPG (nowhere near the masterpiece that is Morrowind), and if Skyrim wants a chance against titles like Mass Effect 3 it's going to need to step it up. I have full confidence that they can do this, but I'm not going to simply give it to them 9 months before it's released.

Stopped reading right there. Bias opinions are bias. Oblivion beats Morrowind five ways to sunday for me, but for other's its different. Can't really comare the game's rpg's nature to one another, because you're just comparing opinions at that point...

Y'know, I don't even know what the "game of the year" title actually means. Like I know what it stands for, but who issues it? Who decides?

I have a feeling DA2 won't be that great, but I hope it is.

We are talking about game awards right? How is opinion not apart of that? Now I could go 'five ways to sunday' on Oblivion's clear flaws and compromises and why MW is a much better RPG experience and on how Skyrim could learn from those flaws but at the end of the day you'll still ignore anything I say because it isn't your opinion.

Well Morrowind got GotY...

and Oblivion got GotY...

I would find it hard that Skyrim couldn't pull it off.

Mass Effect 3 will be good, but probably will win Best RPG of the year.

Battlefield 3 will probably win best FPS of the year.

Batman: Arkham City will probably win best Action Game of the year.

Let me know if I'm leaving anything out. But, as long as Skyrim lives up to expectations, it will leisurely walk across the finish line.

Skyrim will probably get a game of the year, somewhere. Regardless, competition's going to be stiff. As far as RPGs go, Mass Effect 3 is the biggest contender. Guild Wars 2 could be the show-stealer as well, assuming it comes out this year. And both The Witcher 2 and Dark Souls could end up as surprise hits.

It's going to have some serious competition with Mass Effect 3, the Witcher 2, and as much as I loathe to say it probably Dragon Age 2 as well.

Eh, I don't think DA2 has a chance. Whatever its quality is going to be, ME3 will inevitably steal its thunder.

Don't forget that Fallout 3 also got GOTY. Bethesda's got a track record. :D

Why is everyone so confident about Mass Effect 3? All anyone ever seems to do is complain about Mass Effect 2.

Any game/media publisher/company with influence can really give out the reward. Whether it's the VGAs, Game Informer, Gamespot, IGN, they all give out their own rewards.

That's a good question. There are a lot of magazines with "game of the year" awards, which one is more important than others? I think Skyrim, The Witcher, Dragon Age, Mass Effect, Deus Ex will ALL be GotY this year.
