Skyrim freezes when cliking on "Save" and "Load&

Post » Sun Aug 04, 2013 9:59 am

When I start the game, I can click on "Continue" and the game loads properly. However, if I click on "Load" instead of "continue" the game crashes. It does not crash to Desktop, the game just freezes and I cannot do anything (the music keeps playing). If I try to do the tab+window thing to return to Desktop that thing does not work. Not even Ctrl+Alt+Supr. thing, and I have to force a restart, which is something really bad. So, if I click continue, I can play well. The problem comes when I click on "Save", the game freezes the same way if I click on "Load" when I first start the game (the music keeps playing, or the sounds of the enviorment, etc.), and the exact same thing I described already happens. I need help please.

More information I can give:

I have mods yes, although, I installed them sience I first installed the game, I am an experienced player when it comes to modding a TES game and know about compatibilties and such, and after 115 hours of gameplay I had 0 problems.

I can say, this problem started, after I used CCleaner to maintain my pc, and I remember watching it deleting -among others- something called "bad Bethesda Registry" or something like that, among other useless windows registries. I think that might have something to do, but I don't know, as I do not know much about softwareing.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Did you have CCleaner save a registry backup? (Something I highly recommend.) If so, you can restore it by navigating to the folder with the backups (by default, this is in a folder in My Documents), right clck the most recent backup, and select "merge".

Also try verifying your game cache in Steam.

Did you have CCleaner make a backup of registry changes before cleaning the registry?

If you did, find the backup file (file name will be cc_datestamp_timestamp, type "Registration Entries"; the default location is the My Documents folder), right-click on it and and select Merge to apply these changes to the registry. This should restore all the entries that Ccleaner removed. Now try to launch the game.

If that doesn't work you may have to roll back to a previous system restore point.

Damn, I never found the back up option so I never use it. I guess I'll have to do the restore point thing. I hope there is one cause last time I checked it had none ><

CCleaner's default is to ask you if you want to back up registry changes, and you have to click "Yes" or "No" - if you click yes it opens the Save As ... window. You should ALWAYS backup your registry before you make any changes to it, including cleaning it. Also, you shouldn't delete any registry entries through cleaning or other means unless you understand what you're doing.

Try verifying files through Steam, as suggested above, before you roll back to a restore point.

Right. I was able to restore the system to July 27th. I used CCcleaner the 29th. That did not fix the issue. So, if it was CCleaner fault (my own, but due to CCleaner), it would be fixed that way wouldn't it? I had to hard reboot my system again. I hate to do that as that can damage the computer. Any other suggestions?

Update!:

I just did the same, started Skyrim, clicked on loaded and the game froze as expected. I went to dinner, while I was cooking my home made pizza, I heard the "plum" noise or something, the pop up menu sound, and I noticed the game wasn't exactly frozen, but loading!, I was able to click tab+alt to come here and post this, as the game reacted again and the load menu did show! Is just that it takes AGES to load. Anybody knows why? Same thing happens to "Save" menu :S

Update 2!!:

I just noticed something VERY strange! In my loading screen, there is a save game "42942 Unknown Location"! WTF?!!!!!

Your current save file may be corrupted. Do you have a previous save file you can load and try out?

Yes. I deleted that file and loaded another one, I always keep some (4 files plus the auto saves). Loading an older one helped. Deleted that file and everything works as intended. I was really worried as Skyrim is my favourite game and I bought it again for PC (originally played on xbox) and I plan on keep playing it until another TES game comes up. Thank you for your time and advices is much appreciated.
