I gave it a 7 because I can't deny I have fun, but sometimes I can't explain why. Combat is repetitive. I either 2-shot enemies or constantly pause and drink potions/apply poisons. I could throw in a variety of combat strategy, but then I level skills I don't use frequently enough to justify their use. Encumbrance, storing unused ore in my house, and running around is often tedious rather than rewarding, and the only real character development is my own imagination of my character because NPCs have very little depth. But like I said, for some reason, I still have fun.

The World of Skyrim had the biggest impact on my purchase decision.
The world has so much freedom and is filled with so many things to do. It's why I like Elder Scrolls games in general.

The reason I bought Skyrim was that I enjoyed both Morrowind and Oblivion and expected to feel the same about their successor. Whilst my initial reactions were very positive and favourable, I have found that Skyrim is rapidly yielding diminishing levels of enjoyment for a number of reasons. The controls feel woolly, the UI is genuinely terrible (even for those of us playing on consoles) and lacks granularity, navigation is sticky, erratic and often unresponsive and the range of options and abilities have been scaled back considerably to the point that I can no longer play "my way" with the degree of flexibility that I could in the past. The frequency of glitches and game freezes is growing and it increasingly feels as flaky and infuriating as Fallout: New Vegas turned out to be.

I suppose when it comes to buying games, the potential gameplay experience is what I'm most interested in - I don't often buy FPS games (eg the Call of Duty series) because I generally find them tediously repetitive.

So both of you mean by that, the game space? Just trying to make what you said more generic.

Always glad to help with research. I currently own Skyrim on PS3, although plan to buy for PC in the future (got to love mods). Overall I'm giving the game a nine out of ten. I'm absolutely loving it.

It's te gameplay. Not necessarily he feel of an axe, or the thrill of the arrow, but everything that's available. I wouldn't necessarily call it customisation, but its certainly the choice that draws me to Elder Scrolls games. Tha gameplay that allows me to be whatever I want.

Gameplay is a really important mechanic in gaming compared to others, because it is what makes the game work. Graphics are always getting better and are progressing but like with older games such as Halo: CE, Oblivion etc At the time the graphics didn't matter because those games (for example) were huge successes due to their gameplay and their freshness ( I guess you could call it), considering that Halo: CE was an early original xbox game (correct me if I'm wrong), as well as Oblivion but with the xbox 360 instead of the original xbox.

Should have put an option in the poll for 'brand-value' which someone mentioned earlier, quite a big seller in all fairness

To me a 10 isn't perfect, after all, that is almost an impossibilty. I prefer to use a ten point scale as a means of comparison - my current favourite game is a 10, my least favourite game of games I have enjoyed of is a 0.

To give some more perspective, Skyrim is a 10 not because it is perfect, but because it is the best, most rounded game I have ever played and also because I am enjoying it more than any other game I have played. Yes, there are flaws and bugs and mistakes, but those are overshadowed by the sheer immensity of my enjoyment while playing this masterpiece. One of the only other games I have played and enjoyed so much is GTA IV, which, surprisingly to me, I actually like a little less than Skyrim!

Just to give you an idea of some other games and their ratings:

10 - Skyrim (Current Favourite Game)
9 - GTA IV, Team Fortress 2, Assassin's Creed II, Hitman: Blood Money
8 - Oblivion, Assassin's Creed Brotherhood, Race Driver: GRID, GTA: Vice City, Red Dead Redemption, Portal 2
7 - Call of Duty: World at War, RAGE, NFS: Hot Pursuit, Forza Motorsport 3, Portal
5 - Borderlands, Just Cause 2

I can't really think of games I don't enjoy, even a 0 is a pretty impressive achievement on my list, a list which, come to think of it, really starts at 5.

Sorry, I'm not sure how much use I've been.

10/10 vote:

Five years of work on this game shows. The mechanics for leveling are vastly better, and the "soft level cap" is genius. The items work together. The absence of spell creation keeps you from becoming a god. The dragons behave very well, except for when you force them to land with Dragonrend. The level of challenge has increased, as Oblivion was only good on the hardest difficulty. Crafting element is cool. Generally, I love the game.

I voted 'Other' - because simply I'm a fan of the TES series and the kind of games they are. So for me that kind of encompasses the 'Gameplay' choice and some of the 'Character Development', although the character development is a bit shallow, I think just because of a lack of choice in dialogues and story progression, but also in some small part because of a lack of a voiced player character.

As for a rating: 8/10. It's pretty damn good but there's still several things I would like to see changed, fixed, and added.

Well you provided your interpretation of a 10/10 rating, which I think was useful, because I agree that no game is perfect which in turn means a 10/10 game isn't a perfect one. But at first though, thats what most people tend to assume a 10/10 game is. So your philosophical interpretation (Yeah these words work) of the rating system works nicely, I think so anyway.

I'm sure the whole Nord + Dovahkiin + Dragons made for very effective marketing hooks, the box does make a very forceful statement. I'm not so easily swayed.

I'm sure some of the hype did get to me but my final decision to purchase was based on viewing some the video footage from the leaked 360 version of the game. For the first time I was able to see a game I may like to play, almost all the official footage made the game look like a combat simulator. This may sound a harsh view of the official footage but you must take into account the, err, misunderstandings that surrounded the launch of Ob.

PC.

In isolation the game is worthy of 9.x/10, where x is quite a high number. In the context of previous TES games so much is missing, I voted a rather generous 8/10, maybe 7.5 would have been more honest.

I bought the game because I really enjoyed Daggerfall, Morrowind, and Oblivion. While I like Skyrim (I scored it 7 out of 10), I'm disappointed with some of the new features, such as the removal of spellmaking, gimped Destruction spells, and no major/minor skills.

I voted 9/10. I still consider Morrowind the greatest Elder Scrolls ever, although I'm sure I do that only for nostalgic reasons. I was younger back then and perhaps felt more passionately about the game. The Childhood Christmas Effect, I bet. I digress.

I bought the game because I've been following the Elder Scrolls since Daggerfall and will probably continue to follow it until the day the series dies. I voted customization though, because that's what I look forward to the most - the modding parts. Mostly, I bought it because of loyalty to the series, but also because I feel assured that the game will last me years because of the customization, namely adding and creating mods for the game.

I am happy with Skyrim since I think it's a really worthy heir to the throne.

You people giving a 10 in voting are just seeing things through rose colored glasses.

By all accounts, it is practically impossible to objectively rate anything as a 10, which is basically a "perfect" score. The game isnt perfect. No game has ever been perfect and unless you have something akin to holographic technology as seen in Sci-Fi fiction movies(Star Trek), it never will achieve perfection. That is especially the case considering the myriad of different tastes out there.

Just pointing that out.

Pffft. Fan-bois.

How do you guys feel about this thread I made? Do you feel I have given enough options for you to use, and used the right idea's to get sales research (just of those on the skyrim forum)? Because I will be doing the same on other forums, so any word of advice to improve what I have already done would be great.

Personally, I love the LORE of the Elder Scrolls games. The world itself. I haven't touched the main quest yet, I just wonder around and read the books, talk to people. It's a virtual life simulator for me. Escapism from reality, if you will. That said, I find the gameplay in Skyrim really satisfying. So... I bought the game because I love the Elder Scrolls universe.

So you love the franchise, the experience you've had from the franchise made you buy it?

Exactly. For me the gameplay/graphics etc. are secondary compared to the world Bethesda has created.

I bought the game simply because it was another elder scrolls. I would have bought it if I hadn't known anything about the game at all. And this is only because I enjoyed oblivion so much. I gave it a 9/10 because I feel that bethesda doesn't think they have to try as hard as they once did. The quest lines are short and unsatisfying, but the gameplay is fantastic. I think they spent too much time on dungeons, and not enough on story.
