Skyrim Game Informer Thread XVI

Of course it's hard not to borrow something or be inspired by something, however it doesn't mean it has to be a cliche with no thought of uniqness/twists or surprises to make it stand out. I'm hoping there will be something more to the story and the whole "evil dragons, you're the last hunter blah blah" is simply a red herring to make it seem cliche until a good twist.

AS I mentioned, Divinity 2 has a very similar setup, you are a dragon slayer, meant to hunt down the "evil" dragons, etc but it has a very unique spin and twist to that that makes it not cliche.

I'm real disappointed tha tit seems the dragons are the cliche "Evilll!!1" dragons in every other fantasy series. Then you're the last "Dragon slayer" left...not cliche at all. Especially since I've been busy playing Divinity 2 Dragon Knight saga which has an extremely similr setup but manages to curve ball it into something different and not cliche as you'd expect.

Main reason it is disappointing because in TES's own lore dragons are said to be intelligent, able to communicate and have even helped humans in the past.

Hopefully that info is just a red herring and we'll in fact find/meet dragons which are not hostile and perhaps even be able to make choices to help/side with certain ones. I just hope it isn't just cliche and you already know you are the "chosen hero" who kills thel big bad evil dragon and saves the world.

Hey you don't know that for sure, it never explained much about the dragons in the magazine.

Yeah.

Also, they do have their own language and are very intelligent; the player is a Dragonborn which means he can even learn some words of the dragon language and apply them in combat for awesome powers, including the ability to "blink" (teleport) small distances and as summer said, summon a dragon to fight as your companion. Doesn't sound all that cliché to me... The idea of being able to use the dragon language as a tactical ability is actually a pretty original take on a very common fantasy motif.

So it's Thu'um. Ha, called it.

That's out of my system.

Hold on amigo. These days its almost impossible to NOT borrow SOMETHING from SOMEONE in regards to fantasy.

When's the last time you played a fantasy game borrowing from Zulu mythology?

From what I saw, I like it!

Finally, idiotic misuse of the word fatigue is corrected and we will have Stamina! (Sorry if it sounds harsh, but it's true).

Characters and environment, as well as creatures that I saw look very good. Definitely feel more alive and real. It seems also that Radiant AI that was planned for Oblivion will find it's glory in Skyrim.

The developers really seem to have listened the suggestions of the fans, as they say that we don't have to worry about hearing two voices in whole game!

Finally, I think it's going to be great game.

OMG OMG OMG. Lol no but seriously I have yet to be dissapointed by anything I've read so far. The level scaling seems to be under control. Sounds to me like bandits will almost be the same low level bandits and not uber bandits. The scaling I assume comes in when and where you see certain enemies. Sounds good enough for me. A similar setup to Fallout 3 will be fine. Hopefully there won't be any leveled items especially uniques.

The leveling system sounds awesome to me. I'd usually be the first one to criticize and change in game mechanics from previous games but this is an improvement in my books. It's a much more realistic way of handling it. You're no longer bound by the skills you pick at the start. Though it is advised you specialize you have the option of testing out skills before you pick them.

Radiant Story sound amazing. It seems like a good alternative to eliminate or at least keep the number of essential characters to a minimum.
The menu system sound pretty cool. I'm interested in seeing if fast travel is the only form of transportation. I haven't read otherwise, but I'm not counting a normal mode of transportation out yet. If anyone knows more please inform me. No more magical compass on my screen telling me that there's a cave in front of me. :D

The combat system sound much improved. I love that you can't run backwards slashing away anymore. While there may be times that I [censored] about it, I support it entirely :P Bow mechanics seem quite nice as well. Not sure yet about magic, but I'm sure magic lovers have something nice in store for them. And I love the customizable hands. Reminds me of the left handed thread I read awhile back, those guys have even more to look forward to.

Graphics appear to be much better. More realism. I see vascular hands, and less orange glow! Better faces as well, though that was to be expected after fallout. Better draw distances, flowing water and the scenery will make my next computer upgrade very worth it(yep new computer in celebration of running Skyrim on max settings, no more medium settings for me) Speaking of flowing water, I'm curious as to how the waterfalls will be handled though. Will it just be an object that appears to be a waterfall, or will it be realtime(if you dropped a large rock in the river would it slow/dam up or would the water magically flow through it) Just something that crossed my mind.

I'm very excited to say the least. Most of my worries are at ease though still somewhat there(level scaling, spoiler giving compass on your screen, combat system) The only things I can still hope appear would be a tradition travel system and static unique items(no level scaling at all)

And on the subject of Bendu Olo once again, I noticed that it listed his race as "Dark Elf", (Odd in and of itself, given the tale of the name) whereas I feel it ought to say "Dunmer". I'm nitpicking I know, but I wish they'd do it more lore-friendly. Oh well, not too big a deal, I suppose.

Technically, it makes more sense from a lore-standpoint to call the Dark Elves. Men races call them Elves; Mer call themselves Mer. Because the game takes place in a "Man" territory, it follows that they will be called "Dark Elves" rather than "Dunmer." Same reasoning for the name in Oblivion.

I have noticed that too. I think that it is because the new users. First thing that you see in game is your race selecting menu and while Dark Elf sounds familiar to everyone, Dunmer won't mean anything to someone who just entered the Elder Scrolls universe.

I would personally preferred Dunmer, Altmer, Bosmer then their high fantasy counterparts that are really just relics from Arena.

But it is understandable.

But Morrowind did the same, despite being in a land of Mer. I find it to be what the person before me said.

So for anyone who has the magazine themselves, ones who might have seen a higher quality scan, and anyone who has seen any scan quality - there's a page that shows mountains on the top of the page and text that reads "a new land." That's an actual screenshot, not artwork. Correct?

I really liked the idea of the new map, if I understood correctly (the scan cut a lot of text off). But it seemed almost like the map would be like in Shivering Isles how you're sent into the sky. Except the camera would take off from the ground and then rise to an extremely high view above the game. This is quite novel to me and sounds very appealing, opposed to just a traditional map. Although, I may have completely missed the meaning 'cause so much text was cut off. I also liked hearing that there's children in the game. It seems like a great step forward in 'gaming' to put children in. It was cool to hear fish leap amongst rocks and head upstream. It seems realistic and it's nice to see the waters populated more.

Having been given the article in a dream...

it's apparent the Empire is not out of Cyrodiil. This is the Second Empire of Man, which is a redux of the First (yes, really), which was established by the Ysgramor Dragonborn.

Also, Todd, Skyrim isn't the homeland of man, only Nords; and because the Yoku and Nedes are not descended from the Nords, and because they are not from Skyrim, they can't claim Skyrim their homeland. (I really wanted to do that.)

That would be amazing, And would add to the realism.

We can speculate that it is implemented form the description of the scene of hiding in the shadow of of boulder while the giant is passing through.

There is a Screenshot of what looks like a Dark Elf, but you can't see his face, because it's in Third Person Mode !
