I've seen it referred to as a skill. Can I get a link or confirmation about that? I hope it doesn't replace a skill.

From what I can infer, weapons are now broken down into one-handed and two-handed skills (a far cry from Blade, Axe/Blunt).

It seems to me a lot of the weapons specialization will now be done with perks. Want to become a master of longswords? There's a perk for that. Etc.

I really doubt that woodcutting, cooking, blacksmithing etc. is a part of the 18skills. Perhaps its some standalone crafting skillsystem outside of the main skill-system.

Woodcutting can be a source of fuel or commerce in addition to potential building supplies. Maybe we can use the logs to make fires for cooking food. Makes sense since they also mentioned cooking in GI, I believe... It would be sweet if we could construct our own traps with logs we cut.

Maybe they got inspired by http://fo3settler.webs.com/aboutrts.htm!?!

No health bar, magicka bar, stamina bar, compass, minimap, etc. All you see is the gameworld.

If smithing, craftng, woodcutting, mining, and enchanting are skills and there is 18 skills that doesn't leave very many left? That can't be right.

Why would they need to be skills? You can pick locks and persuade people in OB, yet Lockpicking and Persuasion aren't skills.

I think Smithing will be a skill, possibly incorporating crafting (along with what was once called Armorer, and of course metal forging). As for cooking and woodcutting (and mining or fishing if they are in the game) I highly doubt they are among the 18 skills. They may be non-leveled activities, or abilities derived from perks, but I can't see how they would fit into the skill list.

I must admit I am VERY impressed by the info I have learned so far, it looks like they have addressed pretty much every thing that I had concerns about in Oblivion, mind you I still sunk 250+ hours into Oblivion :D Not to mention they are adding alot of things in that I would have never thaught of!

Amazing Bethesda, still months away and I can almost taste Skyrim, can't wait for GI or Bethesda to release Hi-Res pictures and even maybe a 'GASP' ingame Video! :goodjob:

Wish I could get a copy for myself but alas I am in Australia, I have a feeling we sell the Aussie version here which means no Skyrim writeup for me :( As usual you guys in the US get to see things before everyone else in the world !

Well, Bethesda IS an American company, after all. ;)

This sounds so cool! I can't wait to see screen shots when the put them on the internet  I think I read somewhere -I'm not sure though- that if you drop something, it doesn't stay there and NPCs will pick it up and use it? Is that true or did I make it up?

In the magazine the three scenarios were

1) The item lays forgotten in the mud
2) Someone picks up the item and returns it to you
3) Two people fight for ownership of the item

It sounds like Bethesda worked out some of the kinks in their Radiant AI system.

No but security and speech were skills, so what skills would woodcutting, smithing, mining, and cooking fall under?

I'm sure we'll see. I don't want to speculate.

Woodcutting: 1H weapons?
Mining: 1H weapons?
Cooking: Alchemy?

Smithing is its own skill I'm pretty sure. Mining could potentially be a subsidiary of Smithing as well.

Though I don't know how relevant this is because lockpicking and persuasion are minigames, and we have no idea whether mining, crafting, etc. will be minigames.

But isn't speculating what we do? That's half of the fun!

Wow, I can't belive how much this conforms to my wishes for Skyrim. While many things are no surprise(improved combat, graphic enchantments, fallout 3 like scaling) other things I hoped for but did not have much faith they would be in the game. Perks! Random quests! And other stuff that is not really a big deal for me, but cool anyway like kids and beards.

Then, I'd look at Gothic 3 (and possibly for but I haven't played it). It has smithing and mining and forging are smithing perks. Cooking has no skill there, but maybe alchemy could be it's master. Although, one doesn't need skill to put some meat on the stick and hold it over the fire.

Well if that's all cooking is to you then your cooking skill (or alchemy skill using previous example) would be about 1.

Hey, this means that you can be left handed, if you can assign weapons and shields to different hands. /random thought

*SNAP!* here, broken. Shivering isles has map in same style as the rest of Oblivion.

Edit:
maybe we'll have to light campfires for roasting meat?

Actually, if you attacked Sheogorath, you did get a wonderful bird's eye view of the land. At least until the last few seconds. Then you had to reload a previous save.

Cooking => Alchemy
Smithing => New skill that replace Armorer
Woodcutting (need an axe) => a weapon skill
Mining (need a pick) => a weapon skill

At least, this is my guess.
