Skyrim's General Content Level (Teen/Mature, etc)

Post » Thu Nov 18, 2010 11:58 pm

Fallout 3 amount of gore and swearing does not belong in Skyrim. Skyrim should be an M rated game, but not for the same reasons as Fallout.

The game should have gore (not too much, but more than Oblivion), alcohols and drugs, racism, sixual references, gambling, politics, suffering (poverty, disease, starvation etc.), and hard moral choices.

TES swearing is usually made-up native words, "N'wah" in Morrowind is one example. I also remember that native swear words was used in the Infernal City, I think they was argonian, but I don't remember the exact words. I'd like them to keep up the tradition.

I did not vote, because I want none of the above. I want Skyrim level of maturity. And when I say that I mean mature as in actually mature. Not boobz 4 teh sh0ck value. Which in of itself is ridiculous, I can decapitate a man, but nudity is evil? That's a discussion for another day though.

-Violence- Over the top gore worked in Fallout 3/NV, because that's what Fallout is. This dark, yet doesn't take it self too seriously Mad Max action movie kind of game. People's limbs http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=82sozf-PYag. They don't get chopped off. Not to mention the fact that everyone's head is seemingly hanging on by a thread ^_^ Now, Pete has said, what works in one game necessarily does not work in another game. They are making a Elder Scrolls game. Not Fallout. I have no worries about silly gore. I think Skyrim is going to be gory along the lines of http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tx4zZO69oag

-Nudity- Nobody can say the Elder Scrolls doesn't have sixual themes. Go read Sermon fourteen of the thirty six lessons of Vivec. Hell, go play Daggerfall. Or just look at Dibella. She is the Goddess of beauty. Her description is as follows: Goddess of Beauty - In Cyrodiil, she has nearly a dozen different cults, some devoted to women, some to artists and aesthetics, and others to erotic instruction.
sixuality fits the games and the lore. It should be where it should be. If I go to the shrine of Sanguine I would expect to see some naked people, whether they be man, woman or mer. Though, until we as a society can grow up I don't see Bethesda taking this to what it should be. Just look at the [censored] storm Fox news had over Mass Effect <_< And not to mention Oblivion's rating getting changed.

-Curse words- I would much prefer to see the Nords have their own curse words, e,g. Swit, N'wah, etc. Damn is all good though.

Those are my thoughts on the matter.

Why would a few pixelated boobs bother you though? I go into a House of Earthly Delights type place and I'd expect them as part of the atmosphere.

Chalk this up as another reason why I don't think it needs it.

The despicable (in my opinion) double standards of gaming "maturity." This doesn't apply to all M rated games of course but it's very common:
  • Graphic blood and gore? That's just fine and dandy!
  • Topless females? Controversial but not a big deal.
  • Full male nudity? THE SKY IS FALLING!!!
  • The tendency of some games to allow for male/female and female/female relationships but not male/male ones (the reason for this is obvious and disgusting in my opinion, let's just say the female/female options are actually targeted to males...).

In the case of both nudity and graphic violence they should have options to disable it. If they include nudity it shouldn't be shallow fan service for heterosixual males. The word mature doesn't mean topless females and blood and guts. If there's nudity it shouldn't just be in to cater to heterosixual males who want to see topless women; it should merely be a facet of the game world.

As to Oblivion's rating change I'm not sure why people forget about the heads on pikes and mutilated bodies littering certain parts of the game. That on its own would justify the M rating.

I voted Oblivion, but only because Morrowind was a 12, Oblivion a 15 and Fallout 3 an 18 rated game. I'd be happy with an 18 rated game, but I'd like it to be for different reasons than Fallout 3 (i.e. not because of excessive/cartoonish gore or lots of swearing), as I don't think it fits well with a TES game.

There should be more gore, purely for immersion reasons. It just doesn't make sense if you swing a sword and the blood that splatters so unrealistically before fading out after two seconds. And I think they should include Fallout's limbs falling off. And better dead bodies, think Hirrus Cluttummus after you pushed him off the ledge with the backs of his hands on his chest and the elbows making him look like a chicken. I could do without the bad language. Don't mind s'wit and "racist" language like ashborn, tree hugger or snowman.

funny ppl saying Daggerfall had nudity, there was, but it's more like "suggested nudity".

the 5x5 pixel boobs shown in every Kynareth temple, 1 out of 2 houses, and Brothels are legally sensored resolutions nawadays under APS. ;)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Active_pixel_sensor

no nudity for you.

besides... you KNOW the first mods release will have sixual intentions.

Some conversations were pretty much "surprise, six!" The women were pretty much one dimensional six objects to the main character.

Skipping ahead of reading the thread here but...

The main character was pretty much a one dimensional six objects to the women too. Except for the two who actually had feelings for him, oh, and the one who was trying to help him decide, lol

Edit:
Anyway, Voted NV entierly for the down to earth, believable approach it took - advlts behaving as advlts do - simple. Loved some of the very dark stories/scenarios too.

gore would ruin the elder scrolls universe, as many others said.

how would gore ruin TES exactly?
It's based on medieval times, which were extremely violent.
There are dragons, werewolves, vampires etc, that want to eat you etc,not play tig with you.
The weapons were brutal, they were designed to crush, chop, slice etc....NOT tickle you.
Fallout was over the top,but the elder scrolls does need more gore /violence in my opinion.
There are many more reasons as to why skyrim would/should have more gore, far more reasons for it ,than against it in my view.
People want fire spells to set people on fire, but not have swords chop someones head off......i don't get it....each is as brutal as the other.
But to say gore does not fit TES is a joke to me,but thats my opinion....it needs it,just not like fallout.

It's skyrim and nords...not disney and tom and jerry.

Violence , six and language will not make the game more mature , what is so mature in chopping a naked / trash talking imperial into pieces?
I 'd prefer a game with far more advlt writing and choices that come with consequences because this is what differentiates advlts from kids .

Very well said :goodjob:
