Skyrim a Generation ahead on PCs?

Who knows?
But I am glad that I only have to spend about $400 to upgrade my PC to run current games on the highest settings.

Maybe it's because I'm just not a graphics [censored], but I think that, when done right, console games can look damn good (well, PS3 anyway... don't own a 360). So if they can go a bit above what consoles are capable of (not talking about the average console game), then we should do well.

This is not to say, however, that I would turn down directx 11 features and PhysX. I am building a new PC for this game, after all...

Probably no DX 11 support, so no next-gen for you. Skyrim will probably push DX9 to it's limits and little more.

It's a pity. Tessellation would have been just great for creating massive battles.

I don't see why DX11 will not be supported. By 11/11/11 DX11 will have been out for over two years and games supporting it have been released for the last two years. As long as tessellation is adjustable even my laptop might squeeze it in.

Easy. XBOX360 has only DX9 support.

Crysis 2 has DX11 and will be available on consoles as well.
The higher the DX the more possibilites and the better the performance, if I'm not wrong, right?

I have hoping for Directx 11 with tessellation and Physx for nicer physics stuff, but it won't happen.

Directx 11 per se - probably not since they want to make versions for all platforms simultanously, Directx 11-like effects - maybe. Physx however is out of the question. They bought rights to implement Havok into GameBryo and they would be throwing money away if they wanted to switch it now to a different physics engine, no matter if it's better or not.

Only if Bethesda or the devs of the game takes the time to port it.

But you can't ask a hardware to deliver 24 floating point color when it's limited to 16. Or Tessellation when the hardware doesn't support that feature. If something like that could be possible, we wouldn't need to change our graphics card to run a next-DX generation game. A driver update would be enough...

Precisely. Crytek is a PC-aimed developer and they most likely don't care all that much if the PC version looks better than the console one. They will try to imitate as many DX11 features under DX10 (I know for a fact that some can be done this way), but if they can't get something to work on a console they won't be as bothered as Bethesda who are trying to be viewed as multiplatform developer.

I'm an xbox 360 gamer, just to let you know first.

Well the thing is Oblivion on max settings and Morrowind on max settings both already look significantly better than their console counterparts, not to mention graphics-enhancing mods. The obvious downside to this is the price of a high-end rig. Therefore historically speaking, Skyrim will look better for people who can afford a super-high-end rig than it will for me, but mine will likely be equal to the average gamer's PC settings.

$800 to $900 dollars is all you will need. when you factor in that most people will have had to replace their xbox at least once. console games cost $10 more than their PC counterparts. controllers, memory cards etc. factor in that your PC will be able to do more than just last.fm and games and there is no longer any reason to NOT get a PC from a cost perspective. the fact that the PC is going to be several times more powerful is reason enough for under 1000 bucks.

Well, now that's a healthy attitude!

At least for us PC fans :)

Here's my reason. One, excluding $20 HDMI cords, everything came with my PS3 for $300. Two, I am not going to attempt to build a PC, if that's where this is going, and I only buy 2-3 new PS3 games a year, on average. I'm not going to save any money by going for a PC and I don't think it's worth it when I get full support for an entire console generation with just my PS3.

A short list of titles available for the 360 that still have DX11 support for PCs:

Metro 2033, Dirt 2, Aliens vs Predators, Lost Planet 2, Battlefield: Bad Company 2, HAWX 2, and Medal of Honor.

Well, let's them hope Bethesda put DX11 support and Tessellation in good use with astounding FOV's (checked), cities LOD and massive NPC-tesselated battles :)

Don't care. Skyrim by the sounds of it will already be ahead a generation or two in gameplay content which is the bigger part of the picture that matters to me. For me, gameplay > graphics.

The best hope is that it is streamlined to be able to look beautiful and run as smooth as butter on last-gen tech. Or last-last gen tech, considering how quickly new gpu's come out. :P

EDIT: I would be pretty bummed if it used DX11 exclusively. I have Windows XP, and I don't intend to plop down hundreds of dollars upgrade my OS. Hellgate: London did it well, I think; they allowed for both DX9 and DX11 - as in, there are special graphics improvements for DX11 users, but the game doesn't run exclusively on DX11.

I believe that at the lowst graphics settings Skyrim will be like Oblivion, while at the highest settings it will be like that:

And look at the difference: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bHh8D3AzZaU Note: xbox360 does not have DX11 tesselation.

I'm sure it will look better on a high-end PC, but probably not "next-gen". I built my PC myself over Christmas for about $700 (ordered all parts from Newegg) and I can run all the newest games at highest settings. If I were to order the PC already assembled from Dell or Alienware or something, it would have cost over $1500. Considering the PS3 was $600 at launch, I think getting a high-end PC is a better investment.
