Skyrim a Generation ahead on PCs?

This whole situation is ambiguous.
I guess it's just a matter of time to wait and see. I hope as a high end PC user that the graphics will rock.

We don't have any information either way.

It wouldn't surprise me if people with high-end PCs can tweak the graphics beyond what either console can handle, although this may require unsupported alterations of the INI rather than supported graphical options.

I'm an xbox 360 gamer, just to let you know first.

Well the thing is Oblivion on max settings and Morrowind on max settings both already look significantly better than their console counterparts, not to mention graphics-enhancing mods. The obvious downside to this is the price of a high-end rig. Therefore historically speaking, Skyrim will look better for people who can afford a super-high-end rig than it will for me, but mine will likely be equal to the average gamer's PC settings.

Will it be a generation ahead graphics wise on PCs?

It'll be awfully close, but I imagine titles like Crysis 2 and RAGE will be the new champions in the graphics department. And if you've seen screenshots for either of those games, they're about as close to photo realistic as you can get.

So ultimately, no. It may still look damn good though.

it wouldn't surprise me either way.

With a new engine I half expect them to have made it scalable per platform and utilize the latest techniques. So we might get a nice surprise.

Slightly better. The content will be made with the better-selling console versions in mind, I think.

And as a PC user, you should also know that it depends on the computer playing it. I play mostly games on the 360(with some RTS's on the PC), and I know that my 360 doesn't even have a graphics setting. It automatically puts everything on Ultra-Mega-Awesome-Epicness Graphics. No biasing goin on in heah, but console graphics will be better than the average PC's graphics. I mean, if you have a [censored] AMAZING computer, it might be a little bit better than consoles.

I would hope so, in my opinion it should only be a pc game anyway, and you should not at least hinder it advancement just because you'r also making it for xbox and ps3.
Mods are only on pc, so these games will always be better at pc, and thats where they belong.

Actually, in comparison, I'd say Oblivion on my Xbox 360 was at about medium-high settings with a resolution slightly below 1280x720. I know this, because I used to play Oblivion on a computer with an HD 3600 for a graphics card that could run the game on high settings at 1280x1024, and it looked a lot better than the Xbox 360 version. This was without graphical mods.

I'm pretty sure if the Xbox 360 were to run at max settings for Oblivion, it wouldn't even get more than 20 FPS.

Consoles are what, 6 years old now? Hardware has grown since them, consoles haven't. Even a low end PC can output console-level graphics at a higher resolution than a console can manage - an average (read: mid-end) gaming PC will beat the crap out of either console brute-force-wise.

I really hope for yes, but common, its gonna look the same as consoles :( Untill us PC users crank out the graphics mods! Its a shame that there will prob be no dx11 support though :(

Understatement of the year right there in bold.

Any high-end PC of this day and age wipes the floor with both consoles, at the same time. This isn't the console's fault of course, since they are operating on almost 6 year old technology.

Not voting because I honestly don't know. I do HOPE with everything I have that Bethesda will add in some PC centric features that SO many other multiplatform developers have made time to. Such as Mirrors Edge, Metro 2033, GTAIV, Two Worlds II, Alien vs Predator, Battlefield BC2, ect ect.

This game would benefit so much just from some effort on the PC side. Add in some DX10/11 feature support, use some higher resolution base textures, and tweak the .ini out of the box so the gamers don't have to go in and add things that were removed for consoles that don't even have a huge performance drop on consoles. Such as LOD, vegetation density, real-time reflections in water, multithreading, ect.

I know, this would make me sooo happy, and just adding dx11 features ect never hurt console users, but not putting them in if their reasons are because consoles only support dx9 is hurting PC users. I dont like that relationship, hence I really hope they do like the games above mentioned.

I think the higher settings will reveal better graphics than consoles. I'd expect consoles to do some sort of tweaked medium-type settings. That would be lowered shadows, weather effects, lighting effects, foliage and water settings, and custom shaders. It will probably look like medium overall with med-high shaders/textures.

Of course that is just a guess and if you saw screens of http://www.pcgameshardware.com/aid,707055/Metro-2033-Benchmarks-with-DirectX-11-and-GPU-Physx/Practice/ you wouldn't really be extremely impressed, tweaking the settings for your PC narrows that further. So while Skyrim on consoles may have reduced settings, what that actually means visually can't really be discerned until the game comes or there is a benchmark tool with adjustable settings.

I have hoping for Directx 11 with tessellation and Physx for nicer physics stuff, but it won't happen.

Well like I said as a console user, I expect it has to do a lot with individual PCs. My computer can barely run Oblivion at bare minimum settings, but I've seen screenies of Oblivion at max settings and it's AWESOME! With my xbox version being somewhere in between, but definitely above the halfway point. I'd imagine that the 360 version of Skyrim will also be somewhere above the halfway point for PCs but not at the peak.

Like most other games, I'm expecting about 1-2 months before release.

They have to plug the console versions as much as they can first.

That, and system requirements aren't usually found and decided upon until towards the very end of the QA process.

Yes it will (or atleast the look of it will).
If you look at other games like Arcania gothic 4, you see a huge difference, and that difference will grow the older the generation of the console gets, so unless Beth has made some new special tecnology that prevents that, then I guess there will be better graphics for pc than consoles :D

This is something you could've said and been right about two years ago. However, with the vast majority of systems sporting dual core, quad core or hex(?) core CPUs, >3GB of RAM and GPUs far superior to any console's that sentiment is becoming outdated fast. Crytek's already been out and said that the PC's easily a generation ahead of consoles, and several games are already showing this.

Do I expect this to show in Skyrim? Not really; I expect Bethesda to've out their time and money where the highest profits would be, and that is engine console optimisations. Sure, we PC users will have more graphics options and will be able to set it at marginally better than the best console, but I don't expect Bethesda to have put any kind of significant resources into PC specific engine development. I expect a consolified inventory, map and skill interface for the exact same reasons.
