Skyrim is getting a lot of hype on these forums

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 11:21 am

Am i the only one who has realized that there are now more replies about Skyrim, a game that was just announced 3 months ago, than Morrowind, a game released many a year ago. Seriously, go back to The Elder Scrolls section of the forums, and look at the number of replies compared to Morrowind, I think that before long there will be more than Oblivion as well, and by the time the game is released, The Skyrim General discussion may make up most of the forums....

I think that this should also be a huge indication that Skyrim sales will overshadow Oblivion sales by A LOT, not to mention the sales on the GoTY/Gold?Platinum/whatevertheycallit Edition sales, and DLC sales. I can see Bethesda becoming much, much bigger in the coming years... How long will it be until they are the next Activision?

Also, do the moderators clear out the forums before the game is released or something, or do posts about the game itself just overshadow the speculation ones from the past?

There was a time, back before Oblivion, and before the new forum software, when the Morrowind forum was so busy your brand new topic would be half way to page 2 by the time the page reloaded.

The reason you think that is all of the post in the Morrowind section are from 2 years or so ago and up. They remove post after a certain time.

You do realize that the forum has been through numerous "pruning" periods either via updates or changes (ubb to invision etc.). Hell, we just had one a few days ago. Almost 30,000 members and 50 pages have been trimmed.

But anyways, The explosion of topics in such a short span of time is impressive.

It's only natural that the new game will be getting all the attention. Look at how long Morrowind has been out now. Fallout 3 has been out only a few years now and it's a ghost town in that forum now.

Yeah its annoying, turning the Oblivion mods section into a ghost town  and I haven't been to the FO3 section in Ages.

I played Morrowind, and it is my 2nd favorite game of all time, but I have always hated forums, so I was not around for that, but that sounds... interesting. I am sure there were also less moderators around to make sure that people did not copy threads though.

That's because of the VGAs announcement and the 10+ page articles that are being made in a couple of magazines.
And about the post, the high majority of them in the Skyrim forum are just speculation. Some people make 3 active threads of the same thing for some reason.

With each new TES title, more and more people are attracted to the game. Even though Morrowind was Game of the Year in 2002, the community for TES was still relatively limited (Morrowind was for more hardcoe RPG zealots). It really wasn't until Oblivion and Fallout 3 that the fan base for BGS just started exploding catering to more players. Skyrim will be the next big game by BGS and having the biggest exclusive in GI as well as the VGAs really got the momentum started. I can only imagine what the hype level will be once we see the first in-game footage.

Earliest that the Wayback machine will find, I think.

Checking the "Next Elder Scrolls" forum shows multiplayer, online, and co-op threads. No wonder we direct everything to one thread....

We may be few but people like me are the anti-hypers. We know that a game cannot be hyped too much or it will end up just being bad. I'm here to say that Skyrim is going to be Morroblivion 2.5.

I disagree, it looks like it will be it's own game, but whether that is a good or bad thing... Who knows.

Well the reason why it's getting hype is because the game is the sequel to Oblivion and Oblivion itself is an amazing game.

This site is in no way any useful tool in gauging how well the game will sell. Only the most interested AND at least relatively tech savvy users use internet forums to discuss a game (especially so far from release). Dedicated Elder Scrolls fans are likely a relatively small portion of the sales, and even then the active users of these message boards are a very small minority of the dedicated Elder Scrolls fans!

The next Elder Scrolls game coming out after a five year wait is hotly anticipated by TES fans on Bethesda's official forums!? Perish the thought! :o

I don't think it is that bad actually, you see a few optimists but most are just excited for the game and not about the game. Although I could be seeing this wrong. If you don't understand that I mean I am saying they are happy an Elder Scrolls game is being released and not about Skyrim (not the province) itself. Still what is wrong with a little cautious optimism?

Its Not a Sequel to Oblivion........

and Oblivion being an Amazing Game is subjective.......

Morroblivion 2.0? please Morroblivion had something going for it, 2 Provinces. Skyrim will probably be its own game just like all the others...my only gripe are the Apple standard UI for PC.....

Just take a look at the view count for Morrowind's Oblivion's and Skyrim's trailers. Skyrim has more views than Morrowind+Oblivion. Point is, games get more commercialized, more people become aware of them, thus more hype and talk. Which IS kind of pointless... speculating about stuff that are out of our hands just makes waiting even worse.
