Is Skyrim going to be dependant on Steam?

Post » Thu Sep 02, 2010 7:04 am

The reason that I ask is because I have found Steam to be a massive pain in my...... I stopped playing and uninstalled two games because of Steam. So imagine my shock and horror when I bought and installed New Vegas only to find that Steam was going to be in control. It's hard to imagine that a company that produces such high quality games could be so gullible as to allow something like Steam to control their game. So before I get my hopes up... Is Steam going to control Skyrim?

I hope not. I don't think anyone wants it to be 100% dependant on Steam. Maybe have a Digital Version on Steam and a retail version, that doesn't need Steam at all. Pleases everyone.

Nothing has been confirmed yet, but it's likely.

I think that's probably right. It hasn't been officially confirmed that Skyrim will require Steam. But I don't have high hopes of it not needing it.

That would be a true shame if it does...

Million threads on this already, including a few recent ones. The summary of the threads before is:

Some people like Steam because of the conveniences it offers (including myself), other's don't like it because they don't want 3rd party software. There are a few who don't like it but want it more than other DRM. Others don't know what Steam is or don't want it at all because it does nothing to stop piracy. And then about 5% of the people are just idiots.

Doesn't Steam force you to log in to play games? That sounds annoying, especially if you might like to play in a place that you do not have net access at, which might happen often if you had a laptop, like me.

More then likely...though I'd like the retail version to be independent.

But if your a TRUE TES fan...you would play it no matter what. That is the ultimate test.

Buyer beware. You should have done your research, it was well known long before release.

You'll have to wait until an official announcement from Bethesda.

And agree with Badprenup.... too many threads on this already.

You can play in offline mode, but you need to have internet access to do a one time activation for the game.

Edit: Don't mean to be rude but the OP is starting to sound like the 5%. It is basically common knowledge you only need to be online to activate the game for the first time, you don't even need to have steam running when you start the game (it starts it in the background), and the conveniences are things like autopatching, being able to redownload games on any PC that has Steam, the occasional sale (I think a recent one was all Square Enix games that are on Steam for like 80 bucks, but they have done bigger ones), Keeping controls synced on any PC, etc.

Whether you like Steam or not it does have some features that are useful to a majority of people. If they don't apply to you then that is fine but there is no reason to treat it like the video game devil. If you can't be civil about it then keep it to yourself.

Not sure if Skyrim will make an appearance on steam seeing as though on elderscrolls.com you can reserve a copy for Games for Windows.

IF Steam is implemented for the PC, I'll have to think long and hard about it. I would more than likley wait for it to hit the bargin bin before paying full price for a game using that bloatware called Steam.

I'll stick with the XBox version for quite a while before thinking about getting it for the PC.

It's a game for Windows, not Windows Live.

Bethesda would probably lose much more money than they would earn by having full dependency on Steam.

I wont buy it then, simply because in Germany every game witch a drop of blood is censored and with steam I could only play that butchered version.

This is the type of person that really, TRULY has a reason to hate Steam. Someone who can't get the game as Akatosh intended because they would only be able to get a butchered version.

I know, they say that but there have been two times now with new vegas where I was not allowed to play because steam couldn't logon to the net, one time for two days.
As for not doing the research, that was the first time in a while that I didn't do the research...I'm sorry, it will not happen again, I was going by what I knew of their prior games.

As for Steam and piracy... Steam is like gun laws... or most laws for that matter... only punishes the honest.

My problem with Steam is this.

It's a waste of memory space. It doens't inhance the game, it's not used by the game. The only reason it's there is because companies are trying, and failing, to defeat piracy. If the software doesn't nothing for the game than it's a waste of memory space, or Bloatware. I dont' care if I do have 8 gigs + of memory, it's still wasting memory by sitting there and not doing anything to improve anything.

I haven't used Steam since Half Life 1 on the PC and I'll be damned if I'm going to pay full price for a game that uses it, if I even use it at all. Like I said, I'm going to think long and hard and might even forget the PC version.

So the fact it uses a tiny proportion of your 8 gigs of memory is putting you off buying it?? You're telling me that it bothers you so much you're willing to sacrifice better graphics, and mods, because Steam uses some memory??

Yes, that is exactly what I'm saying. Steam treats everyone like a thief by forcing the software on us to play a game that doesn't need Steam to do anything. I take personal offense to that and it's another reason to not use Steam.

It might seem petty, but it's a stand that I'm willing to make. I have and will continue to use my wallet in telling companies exactly what I think of Steam.

Then they probably don't even know Skyrim exists :P.

I'm not sure about the answer though. Gutted for them I suppose :(
