Skyrim Graphics and the future of ES on that matter

Post » Tue Jul 12, 2011 8:29 pm

The gap in terms of graphics from morrowind to oblivion was HUGE when it came out oblivion was the most beautiful game ever made but the gap in terms of graphics for skyrim hasnt been that big. the graphics are sort of comparable to the present call of duty graphics wich is still very nice. but in the next generation of console.... what do you expect from the series on that matter? do you think the graphics will be as good or exceed battlefield 3 pc graphics?

Does it really matter? The quality of the game is important, not the graphics. If I must answer, however, the jump in graphics from a 2011 release to a...2015 release will obviously be huge. It's like asking whether Oblivion would exceed games like Halo 2 and Half Life 2 in the graphics department.

Oblivion: 2006 Skyrim: 2011. the gap aint that huge. what I am saying is that the gap is minimal compared to morrowind-oblivion and im asking if people expext the gap to be greater for the next one or even smaller.

on the other hand. yes it matters. anyone saying that graphics dont matter is either a lier or has no clue of what he is talking about. would you buy skyrim for 60$ if it looked just like morrowind? no. graphics are integral part of what you call the quality of the game. in 2011 you have standards to meet if you want to be called a quality game. yes skyrim meets these standards in term of graphics but nothing more. traditionally, ES games were crushing these standards... even daggerfall wich was one of the very first 3D RPG

the reason the jump from morrowind to OB was huge was because there was no new consoles.. we went from xbox to xbox 360 so better graphics were easier to implement.. OB and Skyrim are on the same console so the jump couldn't be much better..in my opinion it was way better than what I was expecting. However you can never compare battlefield graphics to a game like TES because TES is an open world game it is a sandbox game as in its 50 times bigger than battlefield. Battlefield has finite spaces so the character can't roam which makes the graphics that much better. You can never compare an open world game to a game like that. Will the TES series have as good as graphics as battlefield in the next ten years.. yes..(thats my opinion by the way) But after all of that gibberish.. I would take content over graphics any day

Console limitations. Morrowind and Oblivion were on different consoles.

I don't mind.

Also graphics don't matter but style does.

Graphics have kinda peaked for the next couple years. They considered waiting, but realized sensibly even if they did, the next console generation and new PC's wont be so much of a jump the wait isnt worth it.

The graphics look much better, they look incredible, really for the next few years, they cant get much better

Oblivion was actually meh for its time. If you think the leap forward in graphics isn't proportional to the amount of time that's passed since it was released, think again:

How much have the graphics changed from Gears of War to Gears of War 3?

Yes. I still like Morrowind's graphics. I liked how angular they were, and thegame had a good art style.

graphics are integral part of what you call the quality of the game. in 2011 you have standards to meet if you want to be called a quality game.

If graphics meant as much as you believe they do, then I wouldn't be able to enjoy older games such as Daggerfall, or Duke Nukem 3D. Thing is, I do. Plenty of games have been released with somewhat dated graphics, and were still received very well. Hell, look at Fallout 3. The graphics were the same as Oblivion's, except with more brown. The animations were horrendous. It still scored something like an average of 93/100 on the Xbox 360.

yes skyrim meets these standards in term of graphics but nothing more. traditionally, ES games were crushing these standards... even daggerfall wich was one of the very first 3D RPG

1. That's because the last two Elder Scrolls games have been released at the start of a new generation of consoles, where new technology was available. Not at the end of a generation, where the consoles have already been pushed to the limit. There's only so much you can do with a 2011 multi-platform release. You're expecting two games from the same generations of consoles to have drastic differences, when the platform there being developed for remains the same. By the way, Daggerfall didn't crush anything. Daggerfall hardly looked better than Doom 2, which was released two years previously. Compare Daggerfall to Quake, and you'll see that Daggerfall hardly had cutting edge graphics.

Oblivion's graphics weren't that great from a PC gamer's standpoint. Terribly flat thanks to a lack of shadowing, blurry textures, horrific facial textures and facial animation. Half Life 2 came out two years before Oblivion, with graphics that put it to shame.

The better graphics technology gets, the smaller the differences between the old and new will become too. It's like CGI in movies, which has gotten to the point where there's little room for improvement.

Ah, that's a very good point. I should also add that the more lifelike graphics get, the more raw processing power you need to push out of the Uncanny Valley.

I don't know why people think graphics don't matter. lol . Sure a good game will have more than just great graphics, but if a game looks dodgy it will lose it's immersiveness for me. And the better the game looks the more immersive it is.

As far as your question goes OP,it may look similar to Bf3 .

BF3 will without a doubt have breathtaking graphics/effects. With Tes being Fantasy, you could argue that TES 6 will look better as they could go mad on the Artwork.

The sad thing is(well for PC gamers) the next gen is here NOW ...only on PC.

You know,i bet Bethesda can't wait to make tes 6 . I reakon they have run into more walls than they care to admit with Skyrim.(i'm not suggesting that it won't be a great game though...i believe it will be)

I think we can all agree it's time for new Hardware.

Just gonna throw this out there:

Art Direction and Graphics are not necessarily the same thing. You can have intensive DX11 effects and all that, but if the art direction you're applying these effects to svcks, it'll look ugly. And just as well, it doesn't matter much if the graphics capabilities of your game are not that amazing if your art-direction is still damned amazing.

And on that note, some people shouldn't confuse the two of them either. I don't think anyone did in this topic, but people do.

holy crap did you photoshop that? that must have taken a while lol. awesome job if it was you

And some people are saying graphics don't matter at all or it is all that matters.. for Me i want the graphics to be good.. but if it meant battlefield graphics and ess content or OB graphics and more content I would take the Ladder and I am pretty sure I am in the majority there. Graphics do matter but content will always win

No, just had it handy and threw it up on Image Shack. It's quite useful in defusing assertions that Skyrim looks just like Oblivion, or in shooting down people who think it looks crappy and use modded Morrowind screenshots as a basis for comparison. That's just not fair. With mods, Morrowind can look better than many contemporary games: http://youtu.be/9NX-MvnYUEs

I totally agree. But if you have stunning art direction and the latest graphics then...damn this game could look sooooooo good :D

I think we will see a Dx11 makeover at some point. I maybe wrong but i think it will happen.

True also the amount of work put into the game, Oblivion would run just as fast if all dungeons had unique meshes and textures, yes it would be a lot of work to make and the game would require more disk space.

You're absolutely right. On that note Skyrim looks pretty damn good in both departments. I don't think a giant open-world game can look much better than it does on current-gen consoles. Just Cause 2 landscapes look impressive at a distance but when you get up close and actually look at the ground the texture's pretty mediocre, even on high settings on a PC. And oh god, when I finally install Skyrim on my PC I'm sure I'll drool (at much higher resolutions than console gamers do).

It's really good in the artistic department, but in the technical department, I'm sorry, but it's lacking. Just as anything designed for the consoles will be.

Oh there is no question that Skyrim's art direction is amazing. Anyone who doubts that must really have some specific tastes.

Thing is, from what we've seen and know about, the improvements in regards to technical graphics is not so large as some seem to be making it out to be. Truly the largest improvements we've seen (or at least know about) is the water, the snow, and the character models. Everything else is updated as much as you would expect it to be. Next game, however, we will see a MASSIVE jump. That we can all say is certain.

Is it wrong if I prefer Morrowind's unmodded town graphics to Oblivion's? Oblivion's towns looked so squeaky clean and unlived in.
