Skyrim - Great Houses?

Does anyone know if the Great Houses of Morrowind are going to make a return in Skyrim or at least something of similar value based on the Skyrim lore?

The Great Houses were only in Morrowind, but times have changed and we don't even know if any other Houses even exist anymore, since Redoran was blown up by the Oblivion crisis

It would be cool if something similar exists in the Skyrim lore and it has been 200 years since Oblivion so its not like it can't. Also it added more quests and another way for people to further develop their characters. If nothing else we need some vaults to raid ^_^

They definitely will not. They were a Dunmer thing, exclusive to Morrowind, and all of Dunmer society is destroyed anyways.
But I suppose you were asking about anologous nordic institutions?

In which case; yes. Traditionally, each of the Holds is organized in a manner reminiscent of the Great Houses. There are nine "Clans" headed by "Moots" that serve as the local governments for each region.
Who knows what that's like in the current political situation though, or how it will be represented in game.
edit: at least, there WERE nine, at the beginning of the third era. Looking at the current maps, I guess we've got eight now.

Yes I was meaning based around the Nordic institutions, eight or nine might be too much though..... or would it? Would defiantly offer a huge amount of extra quests and depth to what will already be a huge game. We can always hope lol :)

Great houses are part of Dunmeri culture, not nordic.

But i'd LOVE to see some for of opposing political factioning.

Joining only one of the Nine would make for some incredible replay value, especially if there were a lot of differences between the clans.

While the Great Houses of Morrowind themselves will likely get little more than a mention, I'll bet good money that Skyrim will have its own political factions that will integrate into the story somehow. Skyrim is in a civil war ... if they don't leverage that to make some great political intrigue then creativity truly is dead.

Isnt one of the cities supposed to be under dunmer control? I thought i read somewhere it was Winterhold? I could be wrong but since the destruction of morrowind what little is left of the dunmer might be holed up there. Also there is the underlying racial tensions (todd mentioned) , I feel like for that to be in place there must be enough elves somewhere to make it relevant to the Nords. So maybe the current Dunmer living in Skyrim have some type of heirarchy but I cant really see that being a major quest line.

the only house that is posible for a apereance in skyrim is house redoran as in early years they were always in war with the nords so some apearance would be logic
but afther oblivion their numbers became quiet slim afther the fall of their main base in ald ruin but as they had small setelments and outpost at the border of skyrim and morrowind it posible afther all the trouble in morrowind now some survivers of redoran wil have made a few small setelments their to regain strength but i dont think it will be a joinable house
just some survivers who wise to return the glory of redoran as it was 200 years ago

Remember, there were many houses other than just Redoran, Hlaalu and Telvanni. There was also Indoril (Molag Mar, Vivec) and House Dagoth as well (Kogohrun), which all had a their own flavor and added something to the relatively small Vvardenfell. To think that the five "Primary" Holds might be a "Bit too many", are mistaken. I just hope you can join one of at least two (hopefully three to five) of the primary "Holds", and pledge yourself to the Jarl. The faction dynamics and infighting were one of the unsung pillars of Morrowind, which gave weight to your actions.

As for the fate of the actual Dunmer Great houses, it's possible we may see some Hlaalu remnants around Riften, which borders Cyrodiil and Morrowind, and was the closest settlement to the Hlaalu sphere of influence, you're more likely to find Redoran refugees around Windhelm, which is a veritable stones-throw away from Blacklight in Morrowind (DLC: Ruins of Blacklight?! Maybe!) As for the Telvanni, haters find a way to keep hating, though I don't think we'd see any in Skyrim.

I think (and hope) that there will be Clans in Skyrim, based around the 8/9 Holds. I asked a question about it on one of the official question threads, but no word yet.

From studying recent http://i1126.photobucket.com/albums/l615/Duruza/skyrim_text.jpg and a bit of lore, I am inclined to think that there will probably be 5 Houses with some conglomerations of the Holds.

They would be:

1. Haafinheim and The Pale
2. Whiterun
3. Winter Hold and Eastmarch
4. The Reach and Falkreath Hold
5. The Rift

I'm not too sure though.

We probably won't see much of the Great Houses as it's Skyrim and most of Dunmer culture will probably have been destroyed by the Argonian invasion and explosion of Vvardenfell.

What we do have is 9 "holds". These will probably be less unique than the Great Houses for the most part, more akin to counties in Oblivion, but there should probably be a little more complex than those, particularly the 5 main holds that have the 5 big cities in them. Each hold is ruled by a Jarl, which is sort of like a kind or count, and they will rule from the biggest settlement of that hold, which will be either a city or a large town.

The holds are clans, you won't have single clans made of multiple holds. Each hold has it's own ruler.
