"Skyrim has stopped working" after launching

Post » Mon Jun 17, 2013 12:03 am

Hello all,

Recently I have upgraded my PC's hardware to modern day standards after having been stuck with a rather old PC for a while. Naturally such a large hardware upgrade involves a fresh install of Windows and its accompanying programs, and it all went quite well. After having reinstalled nearly everything, the PC works perfectly and so does every Steam game I have installed (ranging from ARMA 2: Operation Arrowhead to Napoleon: Total War and Dishonored).

The only issue is, there are four games that do not work, and these are the only ones:

  • Skyrim (including all DLC);
  • Oblivion (including all DLC);
  • Morrowind (including all DLC);
  • Fallout 3 (including all DLC).

Interestingly Fallout: New Vegas does seem to work. The issue is the same every time:

  • I open Steam;
  • I open the game;
  • Microsoft VC Redist starts installing (it does this every time interestingly enough, even though it is installed. Other games that use it don't do it).
  • The launcher pops up;
  • I click play;
  • A white, small screen pops up;
  • Skyrim stopped working.

Here is some additional data that might help:

I have done extensive Googling, and I have tried the following:

  • Verifying my game cache (about five times).
  • Reinstalling Skyrim.
  • Manually running the DirectX10, DotNetFX and VCRedist installers from the Skyrim folders.
  • Uninstalling and reinstalling DirectX10, DotNetFX and VCRedist downloaded from Microsoft.
  • Running TESV.exe and SkyrimLauncher.exe as an administrator (and disabled that again afterwards).
  • Running TESV.exe and SkyrimLauncher.exe directly from the game folder.
  • Checking if atimgpud.dll is in my Skyrim folder.
  • Disabling all DLCs and removing all modifications.
  • Checking the load order (it is correct).
  • Running through skse_loader.exe.
  • Running through the Nexus Mod Manager.
  • Deleting the Skyrim_default.ini file, then verifying game cache.
  • Deleting the Skyrim.ini and SkyrimPrefs.ini files.
  • Checking if SYSTEM/Adminstrator have read/full access to Valve and Skyrim registry entries.
  • Cleaning my registry using CCleaner.

I am completely out of ideas what may be causing this. Any suggestions on how to fix this? It would be much appreciated.
