Skyrim - Home of the Nords

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 2:08 am

When trekking around Haafinheim on my PC, the FPS is on average around 30-40, and thats with distant land on 15 as i normally do when playing, and distant statics set to 10 :D

And the forest is looking great imo. But Falkreath will be more impressive :P

EDIT: He he he, im only joking Lestat :)

After finishing the overhaul on Haafinheim Forest (God, it was a pain in the ass) I've started to do the same on The Reach. I do the overhaul because I hate the look of the old cells (The Reach was the first region I've worked on Skyrim)...

Here is a exapmle for what I mean:

The Reach, Grassland (Old):

http://pic.leech.it/pic.php?id=cfadb7dgrassland0.jpg
http://pic.leech.it/pic.php?id=11c3fdfgrassland0.jpg
http://pic.leech.it/pic.php?id=6c606f9egrassland0.jpg

The Reach, Grassland (New):

http://pic.leech.it/pic.php?id=cb207bfmgescreens.jpg
http://pic.leech.it/pic.php?id=b70e62dmgescreens.jpg

The Grassland of the Reach is on the feet of the Dragontail Mountains, close to the border to Hammerfell...the warmest Region on Skyrim

P.S.: NO Comments on floating Trees or anything else in the Background...it is the first overhauled cell...the surrounding is a mess during I'm working

I think it looks great, my fav region thus far. Id recommend cutting the tree count by atleast half though, its kinda much for a grassland imo.

The Reach looks fantastic. Unique from anything we've seen in Morrowind yet still life-like and realistic. The wild horses are a nice touch. It would be strange and interesting to find nordic barrows in the Reach, since it's such a beautiful and dreamlike place it would be a stark contrast to find a dark abandoned tomb.

The most residents in the Reach are Bretons and Redguards...this has historical reasons...in the past (I guess 1st area), there were some famous wars between Skyrim and HighRock or Skyrim and Hammerfell...the eastern border of HighRock is called "Western Reach" and once it was Nord land,,,also a lot of Altmer and Falmer Ruins are in this hold (till now the cells are empty cause we have no tile set for Aldmeri or Falmer Ruins yet)...check lore for more information

The trees look great, however I have a suggestion. Over all the leaves seem to be lit exactly the same no matter where on the tree they are which detracts from the illusion of depth. My suggestion would be to either make a few textures gradually getting darker and placing the darker textures where you might expect there to be less light. Otherwise another option would be to use only the one texture you have for each tree and use vertex colors to paint in the shading, not sure how well vertex colors work with alphas..... I think adding shading would add a nice touch to the trees. :)

I know thats a problem but theres really nothing I can do about that. Theres arent normal trees, they are billboarded. Normal morrowind models I could do that, but with the billboards, the leaves that are in the back become the front/left side/right side/top/bottom all based on where the player is standing. Since the player moves around all the time vertex paint would end up on the outsides and front of the tree.

Ahh, wasn't thinking about that..... Well maybe you could do it based on hight above the ground at least. The leaves nearer the ground being darker and lighter towards the top. Not sure how that would look, but in my mind it seems to work. XD

I love the new trees. They really give a sense of how dense the forest is, and it gives a certain sense of claustrophobia since you can't see very far.

They look sweet, very fitting. Infact i dont think you could have made more fitting trees for the area :)

I don't suppose you fancy modelling some trees like the ones you see in the Jerall mountains in oblivion? Ive been meaning to get some done but really just havnt had time.

If the textures on that Nordic armor were higher resolution, that would look like a screenshot straight out of one of the Narnia movies; the Riekling looks very realistic.
