Is skyrim just a game?

Post » Wed Sep 07, 2011 7:34 am

2001: A Space Odyssey was not just a movie. The Stand was not just a book. Watchmen was not just a comic. Star Trek was not just a tv show. Rancid was not just a punk band. Charlie Sheen was not just a celeb implosion.

These things were more than what was being sold. They were larger then thier definition.

They had umami.
They had a sagittarian range.
They had an aim at a higher artform than thier medium's restrains.

So I ask, will Skyrim be just a game?

OR:

Do you believe skyrim will holds it own as a viable piece of art thirty years from now, despite advancement in the industry (based on what we have seen). Like a kubrick film is never dated and is always.... i don't know... more?

Yes. All video games are JUST a game.

Those who take games into the realm of reality are belittled and mocked (cosplayers) They bring shame on themselves and their families for having too loose a grasp on reality.

The jury's been selected, but the trial hasn't even started

Pretty hard to tell, eh? Were your citations thought to be great when they were released, or did they gather appreciation after time?

Although I didn't really like The Stand. It just kind of lost me.

Another one for OP "Tool is not JUST a band".

Anyway, I think TES as a whole is more than a game series, it has brought millions of fans together and created a community which is more than your average forum based community. We are a more understanding and considerate fanbase, we care not just about the game but the welfare of the company making it.

LONG LIVE THE ELDER SCROLLS!
LONG LIVE BETHESDA!
LONG LIVE GODD HOWARD!
LONG LIVE THIS AWESOME COMMUNITY!

I think this is a line of thought that can easily hype people's expectations beyond the achievable. Even ignoring that point it's the sort of discussion that really works better when the game has not only been released, but has been shown to stand the test of time.

It's only epic to you if it is personally epic to you. For some it might be epic.. for others it'll be meh. .. In your list I only agree with 2001 as epic.. everything else I would say is meh.. to.. ha ha what? Everyone views things differently. I'm hoping I will think it's epic.. but the older I get the less epic things become. I blame time and my memory. Just think how much more fun and epic things could be if you could erase your memory of past events so what your doing now is all new and shiny.

Alexander the Great wasn't only great because he was great to himself.

And no, I do not have to make sense.

Thank you, i think that was waht i was getting at in my late night stupor, will this thing stand up to thirty years of advancement in its indusrty the same way kubrick films do?

Games are always better in your head than they could ever be in reality.

I can already see the complaints about how the game is shorter than previous titles, or how there's less content, or various other things that come with shinier graphics and more powerful physics. I'll just be enjoying it for what it is until I grow bored of it, because having high expectations for games nearly always results in disappointment.

I do think Skyrim will be good, I wouldn't be buying it if I didn't. Just what you can create in your mind and what a developer can create in their studios are worlds apart.
