Skyrim's Level-Scaling

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 4:28 am

I read somewhere that Skyrim's Level-scaling, would be more like the level-scaling in Fallout 3 instead of Oblivion. Can anyone confirm this, and explain to me what the level-scaling was like in Fallout 3, because I have never played the Fallout series. Any info is appreciated, thanks in advance.

Well, for one thing the loot tables in Fallout 3 were logical and made sense (a raider is only ever going to spawn with equipment a raider would have and use, not Brotherhood of Steel armor to use an equivalent concept from Oblivion's Glass bandits). Unless I'm mistaken, loot didn't scale at all except to your skills, but even then only within a range.

Zones and dungeons have level ranges that they'll scale to. A supermutant is going to always be at least as powerful as a supermutant would be. It's not like you'll go to a supermutant infested area at a lowlevel and have to fight radscorpions instead because you aren't high enough level to spawn supermutants yet (again, Oblivion did this).

They did a much better job at hiding the scaling in Fallout 3 which is the point...when level scaling is done right you should never notice it.

One thing that really helps is that Fallout 3's world was hand built for the most part...it's not a random generic fantasyland like Oblivion where you have the same 5 dungeons seemingly randomly sprawled 5 feet between each other out no matter what direction you walk in. Fallout 3's "dungeons" are more subtle than that.

From what I have gleaned of the information on Skyrim's level-scaling, if you enter a dungeon at say, lvl 5, some dungeons have minimum difficulty settings. So you could walk into a hard dungeon and it's difficulty will be reduced depending on your level but it won't be reduced below say, level 18. So the dungeon has been scaled down to the lowest level it can but it is still too high for you.

Oblivion's dungeons were all different, people just can't tell the difference, they think they all look alike. Also, Oblivion had the most dungeons out of III - V. Skyrim has less dungeons than Oblivion but they are all handcrafted unique where none of them are the same. To those that think that Oblivion was so bad and had the same dungeons, Morrowind used the same method to build their dungeons

The Level scaling is similar to Fallout 3 which is a good thing and a bad thing. The bad thing being that it will always be at that level. The good thing is you'll know what level the enemies are when you enter the dungeon. Hm there's a troll so I expect everything to be at Level 8.

My only fear is that the dungeons won't respawn after you've gone through them. That would be incredibly bad and stupid on BGS's part if they did that.

yeah RPGs usually use themed dungeons aka reusing textures whit the only difference being the dungeon layout ,i never had problem whit that i loved to Dungeon crawl in Oblivion and Morrowind.

- Static enemy types like raiders and deathclaws didn't really change
- minimum level areas
- never stat based scaling, enemies of the same class will have the same stats (ex no 50,000HP enemies)
- lower class enemies appear alongside higher ones, so you may find a mutant overlord, master, 2 brutes, and 2 grunts rather than just 3 overlords.
- lots of static encounters that you will always find in a certain place.
- levels are locked when you enter an area, so if you enter somewhere at lv 6 they will be lv 6 creatures from then on.
