Skyrim's lighting looks the same as OB/F3. Dissappointing...

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 8:51 am

Meh..I wouldnt ever expect it to look as good as Crysis, you gotta remember

1. the scale is much larger
2. it still has to be able to run on consoles

I know I know, but I was hoping for a bigger improvement. We don't know for sure yet, how the graphics will look in the final version. The screenshot just made me worry a bit.

well the cry engine is super awesome, BUT well when oblivion came out in 2006 was AWESOME too, i trust in bethesda because evry time an elder scrolls is revealed is the best. just need to see the first page of the game informer magazine, the first time i saw it, i dont even realized that the dragon on the top of the building wasn't an art paint.

Also, elder scrolls is great not just because his graphics, in that point maybe bethesda can't reach the http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Kvl31g77Z8 but i can tell you something, at the 2 hours of far cry or crisis i just drop the control, it was just monotonus, but in elder scrolls IV i reach something like 200-300 hours and stills new.

postdata: i enjoy fps equal that rpgs in fact i prefeer fps so that isn't a factor.

we were told that there are soft shadows that is huge, and really for something to be detailed it just needs maps, shadows, and polys

If you have the magazine, look at the screens that actually have direct lighting in it and let your fears melt away. If the game looks as good as that on the 360 version, the PC is going to blow us away.

Opinion, the graphics look beautiful to me.
I didn't mean that Oblivion graphics looked like they were from 1995. In fact I think it looks quite good at high settings. I just thought with the new engine they would improve there lighting more than they have. Beth obviously wants their game to look good, and lighting seems to be a huge factor for the look of a game.

That says a lot about how much of the 32bit runtime was dedicated to rendering in Crysis. They put all of their eggs in the rendering basket and while that makes for a visually stunning game it leaves it with very little substance overall.

I know that's why the video surprised me. A better lighting system for the in game renderer improves the look of assets with exactly the same detail dramatically.

i guess its like the old saying "It's better to be thought a fool than to open one's mouth and remove all doubt"

I don't get where your hostility is coming from. Are you easily angered? I think lighting is a legitimate concern.

There's one main thing that I look at.

Visually, it's certainly good looking. Animations are going to be the kicker on that case but having seen Havok Behavior, I'm pretty much sold.

However, bottom line it comes down to this: I would rather Skyrim be a bit less visually appealing but have the solid gameplay elements that they're delivering than have it look like Crysis but PLAY like Crysis. In the end, I want solid gameplay and that's what Bethesda delivers.

Okay... We've seen like 20 screenshots and some of them weren't even screenshots(drawings and concept art), and you're saying "Oh derp, this is sooooooooo disappointing..." From what I have seen, it looks 40% times darker than Oblivion. But then again, 17 screenshots just isn't enough.

don't judge you haven't seen anything yet to even judge

??? This the official Skyrim forum and we have a screenshot of Skyrim. Assuming we are all TES fans, why not pick apart that screenshot. We have something to judge, the screenshot I Iinked to.

I linked to 1 of the 2 screenshots we have(officially) of Skyrim in my OP. Please look at it before posting. I just wanted to see if other people saw what I was seeing.

Especially when they are deliberately avoiding showing certain content in those shots.

That's true. Maybe they improved in other areas like open cities and that's why it looks a bit dated. I will play it no matter what. It is a TES game.

I'm somewhat bemused by the "Oh, the screenshot is from the 360 version" response. Yes, it's true that the screenshot is from the 360 version. I suppose the implication is that whatever "flaws" there might with that screenshot are solely due to it being from the 360 version; the thought here seems to be that the PC version, by contrast won't have those flaws.

But, so far as I know, and I hope someone can point me to where there's information to the contrary, there has been no information on whether the graphics will be the same across all three platforms, or whether the PC version will have options for greater visual splendour.

The ability to update console software is the reason the current console generation has been around for so long. And I don't want to cause a stir, but it makes more sense business wise for Bethesda to develop the game with the consoles at a higher priority then PC.

Who ironed in your coffee this morning? This is a forum used to discuss anything related to Skyrim. Seeing as the visuals are somewhat important, even if we don't have many screenshots why not discuss the topic?

Edit: haha the censoring on this forum changed a certain word in my first sentence to "ironed".

Certain landscapes (Markarth side) have shown a particular lack of shadows, which is peculiar. It makes the environment look very strange. I wonder what they meant by shadows on "everything" They either didn't mean everything, or that screenshot isn't a good representation of what the game can actually do shadow wise. Whatever the case is, I think we'll be blown away by Skyrim's Graphics by release.

I think at this point we just have to wait for more screenshots.

fix it with mods hee-hee!!
