Skyrim's lighting looks the same as OB/F3. Dissappointing...

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 3:04 pm

After watching > http://www.neoseeker.com/news/7891-elder-scrolls-oblivion-running-in-cryengine2/ < of a mod for crysis, which places assets from Oblivion into crysis, I realized how bad oblivion's lighting really was, and how important lighting is to how a game looks. Now watch the video for yourself, then look at this > http://static.zenimax.com/bethblog/upload/2011/01/Markarth021.jpg <. That is the only official high-res image of Skyrim we have at the moment. Look at these random images of Oblivion > http://images.wikia.com/oblivion/images/c/c6/AnvilFightersGuild.jpg < > http://www.drinksalot.btinternet.co.uk/oblivion/ScreenShot11.jpg < and these images of Fallout 3 > http://www.ngohq.com/attachments/screenshots/1420d1227439590-fallout-3-screenshots-fo3027.jpg < > http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_0zxxVnlL4fo/TF0bpeOx1jI/AAAAAAAAAIA/MSU-YNWOAOE/s1600/fallout_3.jpg < The lighting of Skyrim looks very similar to Oblivion's/F3's. Bethesda put in all the effort to make a new engine and overlooked the lighting. Yes, they added more advanced shadows, but it doesn't look like they improved much beyond that. When I watched that video I realized that lighting is the one of the most important aspects of the look of a game. Simply placing oblivion's meshes in Crysis improved how they looked dramatically. Do you think that Skyrim's lighting looks like Oblivion's/F3's? I know it's too late in Skyrim's development to change something as significant as the lighting, which is really disappointing. At the moment it looks like Skyrim is running on a slightly modified version of F3's heavily modified version of Gamebyro. Hopefully, the screenshot of Skyrim is from the 360 version or the PC version set to on low graphics.

Edit: Someone mentioned console bashing. I implied that 360 graphics where crap compared to PC. That's a true statement(depending on your rig) for the most part. I am not bashing consoles. I play games primarily on the 360 and I can admit that the graphics it can produce are terri-bad compared to a high-end PC.

It's clear that screen shot was either taken on a 360, or it's a PC set at 360 settings (I have a 360, and the screen shots are a slight improvement over Oblivion). The game will definitely look better running at maximum specs on a gaming computer.

That is the only official high-res image of Skyrim we have at the moment.

That alone should have prevented this obsessing. Wait for game play video before passing judgment.

Because graphics make a game good?

I guess go play Crysis 2 then instead but for the rest of us gamers that know it goes 1. Gameplay 2. Story 3. Graphics we'll still enjoy Skyrim.

a better example of the lighting is the one in gameinformer where the character is crouched and there a deer in front of him that it looks like hes hunting. the shadows from the leaves and the lighting through the leaves look pretty good. if you have the article or can find it online look for that screenshot.

You picked one of the best looking but one of the lowest quality screenshots of Skyrim and compared them to the best of the other games, it's a new engine bro have you seen rage? Not to mention the detail of the new characters showed in GI?! Seriously bro gtfo :flamethrower: .

Oh and Cipher had it correct, Gameplay>Story>Graphics.

I like how people are judging the entire games graphics and lighting and such by one screen shot, which was from the 360

I am pretty sure that they can do shadows on the 360. They did them in Fable 3. Besides, there is an overcast in that picture, there should be no shadow. They havent demonstrated the shadows yet.

Strange that one set of screenshots of what probably isn't the final build of the game taken on a system with settings no one knows about at what resolution in a magazine is going to be the standard for the whole game.

I'd wait for more information before attempting to show that any aspect of the game will svck.

Meh..I wouldnt ever expect it to look as good as Crysis, you gotta remember

1. the scale is much larger
2. it still has to be able to run on consoles

I've never played Crysis. I don't intend to. Graphics do matter. Otherwise why would game devs continue to produce better and better looking games. Why not just make a game that looks like it was made in 1995 and make the game huge. Anyway, I do care about story over graphics. Hence why I prefer Morrowind to Oblivion. Simply bringing up the fact that the graphics look like crap does not mean I value graphics over gameplay or story.

Having seen the screenshots in the GI print magazine, I can guarantee you Bethesda is not ignoring lighting. Don't get yourself paranoid about it :)

I was just comparing the new engines lighting to Oblivion's lighting. You do not need to play a game to see the lighting system it uses. A screenshot will do just fine for that.

Crysis was made for high end PCs and Skyrim was designed to run on the 360 which is over 5 years old. You can only advance graphics so far on aging console hardware and it appears that Microsoft and Sony have no intention of releasing a new xbox and playstation system any time soon with better hardware.

First of all, Cryengine 2 was a few years newer than the engine that Oblivion was using, that's a long time in the computer world. Also, all the images we have seen of Skyrim have been on the 360, so we don't have high quality shadows or HDR or tesselation or anything of the sort. That video was obviously on a computer running the highest settings possible, thus it's going to look better than the Skyrim pics. Besides, the screenshots of Skyrim from the 360 are as good as highest settings on Oblivion, that's saying something about it because 360 version of Skyrim will be a fraction of the power and beauty of the PC version, especially since I think BGS is using the extra time they have before the release date to not only debug the game and add extra content where needed but also to go back a improve the textures for the PC.

Before anyone says anything btw, it was pretty much confirmed it was from the 360 when you could see clear lack of AA in the screens in the mag and then a tweet confirmed it was from the 360.
