V - Skyrim Loading Screen

Gothic 3 had no loading screen ---> 100% immersion added ---> pure awesomeness

Yes that's one of the things I love in the gothic series that you can open doors and just enter with no loading at all.

I hate loading screens (I much much much prefer a seamless world. So many more possibilities... so many more), but if I have to deal with them...
... then I'd like loading screens to be concept art pictures of relevant areas.

I don't see that many possibilities. The only thing that comes to mind is with a city and entering it from whatever direction or climbing over the wall to sneak in. But what's the difference? You end up in the city either way? I'm not trying to flame or anything just wondering what all these possibilities are.

Well, have you ever experienced a fully seamless RPG (aka Gothic/Risen series) ?
Then and only then will you realise all the possibilities my friend... really !

Loading screens are fine as long as they aren't those gameplay tip messages. Pictures from the area I'm entering, historical or current facts about the place, etc. aren't so bad. But of course, ideally there wouldn't be enough time to put up a load screen.

I'd honestly rather we have black screens with an inconspicuous progress bar (something kitschy like a white Skyrim logo filling in) or concept artwork. I don't need to look at poorly Photoshop-filtered versions of screenshots of the game with stupid information that I already knew about. :stare:

Did you know that magicka is used to cast spells?

I'd have voted no loading screen, but since it's confirmed to have them I voted for the screen to turn black then to the house or city.

I'd rather have this, then say the tips etc, because in oblivion I could never fully read any of the tips. The loading screen was too fast to even read on my pc, and I'd usually make out either the first few words or sometimes the whole first sentence. On occasion I'd be able to read the whole tip if it was short enough. So just give me a quick black screen, and I can read books ingame or the manual for tips etc.

agreed i never liked loading screens, the problem is not the game its the compact disc it takes longer for any drive to read a disc, but the faster the the drive the sooner the game will load ( plus motherboard and CPU speed), does any body remember the nintendo 64, in playing zelda on that it took maybe 2-3 sec of black and your in the city. cartrages are faster and believe it or not they actually can fit more memory into them as well.

Who doesn't do a full install these days? There should be zero disk reading from the DVD drive, just straight from the hdd to your ram. Too bad they couldn't just load the whole area onto our ram to begin with, then we wouldn't need any loading screens.

Loading will be am unfortunate constant in modern gaming until quantum computing is commercialized. So there's no point in crying about it.

The best loading screens hide the loading. For example, Mass Effect's elevators on the Citadel, as well as the Airlock cutscenes. I found it Ironic how many people complained about it, and then also complained about the loading screens in Mass Effect 2. It just shows their ignorance, and it pains me to know such people actually had a hand in changing something within one of the best recent games.

Assuming, and it's likely, that Skyrim will have "Loading" Screens, How about some Concept art and "Codex" Entries, that give the player additional information on the world and lore?

I wouldn't mind keeping the classic loading screen. It brings a sense of where the game came from and offers some neat nuggets of info about the game.

But I also wouldn't mind seamless transitions either...

I voted something else on both questions:

The First:
I said 'Something Else' because I think Sound/music could help a lot in loading screens.
Example For a house: If I walked into the house, I would like to hear what I would normally hear in a house. Maybe a fire kindling in the furnace (Fire place, etc.), some welcoming music, greetings from others in the house. I'd prefer the loading screens to have a picture of the EXACT area you are entering (and not some other place halfway across Skyrim), but I'd like some of this stuff instead of your average tips or little facts.

For a Dungeon: I would like the sounds/music again with this one, but I'd also just like a picture of a few of the enemies in the dungeon. These loading screens could be more generic, since you don't have much knowledge of the dungeon. For the Sounds/music, it'd be nice to hear a door creaking (or whatever you used to get into the dungeon) and maybe a few of the enemies sound effects (Maybe a Skeleton's bones rattling, Necromancer laughing, etc...).

For the latter:
When I walk into the town/city, I'd like to hear Sound/music like I've stated before. Maybe music from the local inn, if there are street performers then hear them performing, people talking, greetings, etc... The loading screen could just be a picture of the town, with random facts about the town.

All of this stuff would be nice, but I highly doubt them implementing it.

A better engine, one could hope...

The quality of the game engine has nothing to do with the presence of loading screens.

THIS. A million times over.

I only played Mas Effect recently, I bought both the games at once and played one rtight after the other.

All the reviewers were applauding how the elevators were cut out, and yet they failed to mention a loading screen was put in it's place. It's the same [censored] thing! At least an elevator is a seamless transition.

ideally i wont have any loading at all. but if there is a load time then i want an opening door like resident evil and for the cities i want cheerleaders and swimsuit models.

Yup. I'd vote for that.

No I haven't, maybe I'll try them out but from what I know about them they sacrifice other features that I like about the TES games, so I'm not all that eager. Sorry but fully seamless worlds are not that important to me. I'm playing a game and so a bit of loading doesn't bother me. I did play Far Cry 2 which had a few indoor areas, and the guy kind of went through an animation to open the door and he goes in. But really its the same experience. The time he takes to open the door and go in is the same as the load was in Oblivion, sometimes the load was quicker. Maybe it's not the best example, Far Cry 2 wasn't an rpg and the enemy couldn't go through the doors etc. Either way though, doesn't change anything. Can't you give me some examples rather than just saying I have to play it myself? And don't just say immersion, there's got to be more than that surely.

would love no loading screens and to just experience seamless transitions into separate areas (cities and buildings).

This. Unfortunately Todd already said that due to the current console's limitations they weren't able to do this. I don't really midn though. IMO loading screens were fien in OB, though I still downloaded mods to replace the pics with prettier ones :P

Don't know about loading screen.. Know about Pause Screen! It's in the Game Informer website "Behind The Scenes" Skyrim video. You'll see it at some point :) (Video http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2011/01/10/video-behind-the-scenes-of-skyrim.aspx at around 3:23)
Aaand I don't want any tips. They were repetitive

If there are any type of loading screens (which there undoubtedly will be) I actually don't have too much of a preference. Just don't make them svcky.

I would personnaly like to see a a screen for buildings where you to to 1st person view (if in 3rd) you char puts his hand on the doorknob, game loads and when ready, opens the door and walks into the darkness / light within, end loadscreen. various loadscreens would have to be made for each door type however, and that's not too realistic an expectation. a 3d rendition of that door / your character's hand might be cool too, but still, not gonna happen. barrign something like that, a fade to black might be best.

For the 59 people who voted for 'no loading screen at all' - This is not possible! You have to have loading screens for this huge game to render the graphics and textures. There are no magical remedy or hack that can solve this problem. You'll have to live with it for now, and anxiously wait for the next gen to not have loading-screens, which is more likely and more feasible.
