Skyrim Longevity

Post » Fri Feb 18, 2011 7:18 pm

Let’s just start with this. TES games today I have play are 3 and 4. Oblivion I went 300 hours Morrowind probably more. I have taken a break as I have gotten into the Fallout's in many others of the wonderful games out today and until very recently haven’t played a TES game in maybe a year or so? My roommate bought oblivion and started playing and I was watching him and though man this game is still totally righteous. So I go out buy 2 copies of Morrowind and Oblivion for myself and my brother and we have both just gone back to town on both of them. Currently in about a month I’m 50 hours into Oblivion and I’m not sure with Morrowind. So out of a 5 and 8 years respectively on these titles I can still go back rebuy them and still play both with the same enjoyment and wow factor. That being said these games have a longevity like no other. So if you had to guess do you think Skyrim have more less or equal amounts of longevity as previous titles have?

Personally I feel the game is overall going to boast more replayability (vanilla, not modded). Main Quest wise, it will probably remain about even with the other TES games.

I think it will be about the same. Perhaps more than Oblivion, but probably equal to or a bit less replayability than DF or MW.

Depends on how the combat system along with the ai works. If it is as good as they say, this game could go longer. Its seniors are Oblivion and Morrowind, but I see Skyrim being right up there with them.

I think it might be the same but depending how they use Radiant Story, it could expand it further.

Certainly more with the radiant story etc. New playthroughs could be quite different with it customising your game to how you play.

Its most likely going to have a great deal of replayability thanks to random quests AND conditionalized quests, like what Todd mentioned. For those who didn't listen to the podcast or who didn't understand the concept, all that has to be met are certain conditions. For instance, the quest may say that a child of someone you know in a specific town must be kidnapped and taken to a nearby dungeon that you haven't been to. It doesn't use any specifics, only conditions. This means that the quest could change each playthrough. It may be the child of the smithy was taken just over the hill, or it may be the child of a poor woman was rather far away.

Then, of course, there are the random quests, which are most likely much like the conditionalized quests, except that they can happen more than once a play through.

If one playthrough only let's you use one fifth of the available perks then i expect there would be plenty of reasons to start again with a different character.

Both pc and consoles Skyrim will offer longer playtime imo.

1. Perks - adds replayability since you choose 50/280 in one playthrough.
2. Radiant Story - to what degree we don't know, but they're implying its added touch of randomness will offer different experiences at different places and times.

Pc users, we can safely double the playtime if you're into using mods.

I think that the new character building way will allow for truly unique characters on different playthroughs.
This, combined with the radiant quests I think will give Skyrim fantastic replay value.

Im really optimistic about this, I think its gonna rock socks!

I think it will have more longevity/replayability than Oblivion did at least, when one puts mods aside. Compared to Morrowind I dunno, I'll say more to that too simply because the gameplay itself will be fun. Oblivion's magic didn't interest me enough to play a pure mage for example, Skyrim from what little we know might have me playing a pure mage at some point and a backstabbing assassin style char in another playthrough (usually only play sneaky archer as far as stealth stuff goes).

So thats more variety I'll partake of, at least. ^_^

Considering how many people still play Morrowind (and Daggerfall for that matter), I think it's hard to beat something with a nine year head start. When Morrowind dies off then we'll have a decent guess as to whether Skyrim can outlast it.

You're asking us to tell you the replay value of a video game that we know virtually nothing about that doesn't come out for another year.
What's the point of asking that question?

You tell me.

I spent 1500 hours on Morrowind,
and 1200 on Oblivion (modded)

Morrowind lasted me years, Oblivion lasted me months. I'm HOPING Skyrim will last me years, but it's hard to say really. It depends on how deep the game is.

What's the point of asking that question?

Curiosity? Boredom? Creating a topic that shouldn't really cause flame wars between different factions of players? Etc. Why comment in a topic just to ask whats the point, that in itself is rather pointless, no? :P

Seems like it will have more with more variety in playstyles and the environment in general, especially compared to Oblivion.

I've been playing Oblivion on and off for 2 1/2 years :) I'm sure Skyrim will also have quite a bit of longevity as well. Couldn't vote on the poll cuz I haven't tried any earlier TES games yet. I'm sure in many ways it'll have more than Oblivion, but who's to say if the game isn't even out yet! Does it have "more" than Morrowind or Daggerfall or Arena? Who knows. Depends how we're defining "more" and "less" and "the same".

I found Oblivion to have higher replay value than Morrowind as it's more random, Morrowind had to much placed items so you know where to go to get it and for armor it was no other ways to get it. Weapons was easy to get at high levels by hunting golden saints.
This was also the problem with Fallout 3, but worse as Fallout 3 had less content.
Oblivion is more random and you has to hunt for items, yes you end up with to much high end stuff but getting where is a challenge.
Not sure how Skyrim will become but the radiant AI sounds very much like a quest randomizer or at least scrambler, add that it looks like we will get more challenges as everything is not at your level like in Oblivion and it sounds like it will have a good reply value. No let moders play with it for some time and things start to get fun.
