I'm disappointed. :sadvaultboy:

I just hope the new UI will work well on the PC. Oblivion's didn't... Fallout 3's was a bit better, but still not a good UI.

Which new UI- The one made by gamesas to keep all 3 platforms looking equal, or the one modders make later for PC players?

Hint: One of them will work well on the PC.

Isn't it possible that too much is being read into this quote saying "All three will look just as good"

Of course no developer is going to say their game looks like [censored] on console. How do you know for certain that the PC version will not use DX11?

Because some people merely jump to conclusions because to them graphics is everything these days *sighs*

Whaaa?

If AA and display res are the only visual improvements the PC version is capable of, then it's the same as there being no visual improvements available on PC. I can force 16x antialiasing on anything my GPU renders, and resolution is likewise determined by the user and his or her display hardware. Both factors are irrelevant to a specific game.

People saying "Good, now I don't have to upgrade" - You wouldn't have to upgrade anyway. Just turn down the graphic sliders, that's what they're for.

Good. That means I'll have a fighting chance of being able to play Skyrim on my laptop. Here I was worried I'd only be able to play it on the consoe.

Graphics are not everything, but I would like to be able to take advantage of my expensive and high end PC's capabilities. Its disappointing, but won't stop me from buying the game.

That right there says its better. Besides do you even need to ask? So far the games they've made have always put high end systems to use. I heard Morrowind practically butchered high end systems when it came out and Oblivion certainly didn't hold anything back either. If you google comparison screenshots you'll see there is a very real difference between PC and consoles in terms of graphics for their previous games. Xbox 360 is the worst since it has the oldest hardware, then PS3 then PC up front. Not to mention PC graphics will only get better because there's always someone who releases graphic packs.

That is like saying "Hey at least they are letting you use a keyboard with your PC version."

Of course the PC version will have higher resolution AA and AF. Those things are what the drivers allow us to do. I can run games from the 90's at high resolution AA and AF. That is not better, that is just a necessity of it being on PC. Not having ANY extra fidelity aside from Resolution AA and AF is way SUB par for the industry. This is a AAA studio and a AAA game.

Games like, Mirrors Edge, Battlefield, Left 4 Dead, Far Cry 2, Crysis 2, Grand Theft Auto, Dead Space, Alien vs Predator, Metro 2033, Bioshock, Half-Life, Portal, Torchlight, Red Faction, Unreal Tournament, etc etc all have made the effort to add in PC features to take advantage of hardware that is 6 years newer than the consoles. There is absolutely no excuse for Bethesda not to throw PC users a bone.

Morrowind yes, Morrowind supported features that the Xbox version did not(Tesselation, HD Textures, More Polys, Better lighting, draw distance, etc.), because PC was the lead platform for development.

Oblivion was around launch when PC's and consoles were closer to being equal. That was years ago.

If I had it my way I would force everyone who says graphics are all that matters to play all the classics like SMB, Zelda, FF, Metroid, etc. Unfortunately I would have to do a lot of driving and kidnapping and I'm busy.

gamesas's UI. I just hope the UI is easily modable, if it turns out to be crappy on the PC.

To me this just means that the system requirements will hopefully be low enough that it won't break the bank to upgrade my PC and run the game. :D I'm also glad they aren't treating console players like second class gamers by giving them an inferior product. The console versions already won't have mods. Within a month of release, modders will have made the PC version look exponentially better than the console version. Console gamers will still be playing the same game. Keeping the vanilla visuals similar seems like a fair deal in that context to me. We have to wait a month or two, but after that we get the better looking game, and more content, user-made though it may be. Why shouldn't console gamers get at least comparable visuals early on?

Plus, they make the most profit from console sales and they know this. It might not be wise to advertise the PC version as the better looking game.

soooo....Do I keep my 9800GT or upgrade to GTX 460?

I am building a new comp anyway (one that can fully utilize the 9800GT),
and will eventually be using mods.

Looking at Oblivion and Fallout, while I can make the game look the same on my PC as it does on the 360 if I adjust some settings down. I can still make the game look better on my PC using in game settings. I don't see why Skyrim should be any different.

Well if people have really seen the pictures in the GI mag, the ones that actually show the lighting, the game looks great. But PC will inherently have things that the consoles do. Mainly what he is saying is that they aren't going to change the texturing. That is unfortunate but the PC will definitely look quite a bit better than the console version by default. I hope that if we make some kind've petition and if they have enough time before the game needs to go gold, we might be able to convince them to improve the texture resolution of the game. You have to realize that HDR lighting, AAA, AA and the higher resolution of the game in general will make the game look gorgeous.

There's a difference between caring about graphics and them being everything. Yes, I like to look at nice things. It adds to the experience for me. While I'm sure such hardcoe gamers as yourself would be happy with a text adventure, I find better graphics to be much more immersive. Muddy textures and low-poly models just scream "Hey, this is a video game! Look at me! Look at me!" and pull you right out, and effects like tessellation can add a lot of detail to the image, SSAO can add to the scene by blocking light where it should be blocked, so on. Better textures and models can have gameplay differences too, allowing you to spot more detail further away.

Graphics are important, acting as if they are meaningless may be 'cool', but it is a fallacy. They are the typeface of a book, the writing of an action movie, the recording quality of an audio-book, and the compression of a lossy-compression scheme. Important!

Because the developers BS'd to the fans faces before about this stuff. "Oooh, water reflections are too hard!" "Hey, what's this setting still sitting in Oblivion's configuration file, and why can't we turn it on normally?" They have literally lied directly to the fans for unfathomable reasons. While I hope whoever that was has since been fired for being mentally incompetent the history remains.

Well, we should still be able to mess around with the INI. There will probably be an edit for how many shadows are allowed on the screen at one time. Then we can up the number for it.

Also, a Skyrim Graphics Extender should be do-able.

Excellent, that means my laptop should handle it well enough, I'd hate to buy a desktop that I'll never use and playing this on the PC is essential to me. I don't care much about graphics anyway.

You are absolutely correct. I could just as easily buy this for the PS3, or the 360 for that matter. But modding is important to me, so I'm going for the PC version. If I have to choose between the best graphics and mods, there's no doubt what I'll pick, mods. Every time.
