Skyrim to look the same Graphically on all Sytems

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 8:05 am

So what? Is it so hard to accept that this is how it is? Do you really feel entitled to the best possible graphics that can be rendered? You are not entitled to anything, other than a product that works. How it works is up to Bethesda as the developer to decide.
If they want everyone to have the same visual experience, that is their decision and that's something you need to deal with.

If I'm paying $60 for a game, then damned right I do. I'm the customer, it's their job to convince me to buy it. I can go elsewhere, there's more than a dozen games I want coming out this year. But I love rpgs so Skyrim was near the top of my list. That being said artificially limiting the pc is just being mean to the customer because you can. There were higher settings available in the ini when Oblivion came out, but no one could be bothered to take and hour and write in a "very high" setting on the menu. If the Bethesda developers really don't care about me, then I can feel assured in not caring about them or their game just as easily.

Consoles have now Officially f'd up the PC version.

Added to the whole lot of mostly horrible information that was leaked in a magazine (not GI), my hopes for this game have definitely gone through the toilet. Goodbye.

LMAO! I believe Bethesda, not the consoles f'd up the PC version. But please keep  Im over here

@DCDeacon Can you confirm that Skyrim won't give the extra features to the PC version like most other games like higher res textures?

@Soulece I'm not sure I follow. You want us to not release higher res textures for PCs w/ more horsepower that could handle it? Because...?

Why do you feel entitled to have the best graphics that will be rendered? Why would you be entitled to be more entitled to talk about entitlement than others? Also, BGS is making themselves less entitled for money from PC-gamers. :sadvaultboy: More entitlement for everyone would be win-win.

Thanks BGS programmers. You just made my hard drive and DX9 graphics card very happy!

These comments make no sense. PC users can still get extra goodies and you can still run it in dx9 mode on lower settings...

Today I almost went to the store to pick up 4000$ worth of PC supplies, so I could build myself the meanest machine in the world....that god I decided not to.

But I wouldn't worry, I REALLY think someone should tweet them on this. It just doesn't make sense. Why dumb down a game for people who spend thousands on a gaming machine?

this is logical, you code to the lowest and shuffle it out to all others. For this reason, and the fact that PC is less accessible, leaves me to the conclusion that PC gaming is dying
guess I'll just get this for the 360

We may or may not be over-reacting, but let me explain to those using DX9 and XP.

It won't hurt your PC or make you run the game any less if DX11 and other techniques are applied. The only change are lowering a few sliders or, like the Fallout 3 config before play, you just need to pick the DX9 option. This is extremely simple if done correctly by Bethesda.

If it's true that Bethesda won't add unto the PC game (I liked Fallout 3's extra PC options, good step up) there's something very wrong. But as long as the Creation engine has innate support in DX10/11 I sorta don't care, personally as a modder, if it's implemented. As long as it allows us to add it in. Same goes for all the other new methods of rendering, techniques and shadering.

Also.. I hate plugging my own work, but seriously. If you want to know what happens to a game optimised for PC, you ought to look at my latest vid.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lkPpmnSbZ74

(Sidenote is that recording didn't work perfect. Game itself runs perfectly smooth for me. Half of my hardware is two to three years old.)

I hope this helps Console/low PC hardware players to understand what can be achieved when games are not Console-ified.

Nonetheless I do own Oblivion GOTY on Xbox 360 too. Got a good 50 hours into it at least.

Last note: Hope Bethesda will continue what they showed with Fallout 3's config, but with added DX10/11 support/implementation. Also looking forward to see into the potential of the Creation engine in modding.

Todd Howard

So with that, the hopes of PC gamers everywhere are dashed, as far as getting anything extra in terms of graphical fidelity. New PC's (Or any PC built in the last 5 years) will run Skyrim no different than the Xbox 360 version.

The reasoning? Well, I honestly cant think of a logical reason why developers would do this.

They build a new engine, yet limit it's potential based on 6 year old hardware.

They design new assets for the lowest common denominator, so instead of making some nice textures and scaling them down for consoles, they make low res ones and leave it to the Modders to rework the textures in the months and years following the games release.

Discuss.

The current console generation has been around for so long because of the ability to update software via the interweb. Developing the game the same on all platforms will reduce the amount of bugs and errors in-game. Getting mad that consoles are a more practical solution for most gamers is the real root of this thread.

Exactly. If Skyrim would be DX 11 for instance, it would definitely be backwards compatible; and most important - scalable.
People would still be able to run the game on their dx 9 computers; it would just look really crappy :)

You just said it yourself, you can go elsewhere. If you don't like what you get, don't pay for it. If you can't live with that, then you need to compromise.
How can you expect Bethesda to care about you? They're a business, not your neightbour or best friend from high school. They need to please as many people as possible, and pleasing everyone is impossible.
Would you rather see Bethesda cater to each and every fan? The game would be a mess and it would do more harm than good to everyone involved.

That right there says its better. Besides do you even need to ask? So far the games they've made have always put high end systems to use. I heard Morrowind practically butchered high end systems when it came out and Oblivion certainly didn't hold anything back either. If you google comparison screenshots you'll see there is a very real difference between PC and consoles in terms of graphics for their previous games. Xbox 360 is the worst since it has the oldest hardware, then PS3 then PC up front. Not to mention PC graphics will only get better because there's always someone who releases graphic packs.

That's what I've been thinking. There's pages of community thoughts yet barely anyone comments on Howards meaning of higher resolutions on PC.

That simple sentence could easily be broader than you think.

Yeah, I guess my tweet wasn't quite typed correctly, that sometimes happens with my tweets because the lack of space, I sent him a couple tweets that clarified what I mean so we will probably get a more clarified answer but it does give hope that they are.

Higher resolution is standard on all PC as it is inherent in the hardware. You can run ANY 3D PC game ever made in high resolution. That is not a feature of the game, but a feature of the hardware.

That said, the quote from Pete Hines gives me a TAD more hope. Although DX10/11 still seems unlikely.

I am not sure how far in advance companies release (or even know) this information.

I just like everyone else just needs a stinking confirmation about dx11 lol. (and werewolves) But werewolves can be modded in if necessary, dx11 cannot!

Assumptions which are not based on reality in any way. For the closest example, look at Morrowind. Was it a mess? No. Your line of thinking could be compared to shooting something with HD-cameras (making a new engine) yet broadcasting it as 576p or whatever it was. Some things require a bit more work but others are just linear sliders to control the renderer. PC could have better graphical potential with small effort. But why do that - let's streamline things more and remove any differences from UI's between XB360 and PS3 versions as well. That'll be fun.

It's in times like these we need a dev coming in the thread and confirming all the stuff; like Gstaff did with the leveling scaling.

Gstaff! Where are you? :(

Same on the Pete Hines comment.

And you have a point but there's a reason I said the comment could be key word "broader" than thought. Howard(Or most people who release info of anything before release) has a way of simplifying the topic for easy to ingest form.

I think people take the comment, or lack of more info in the comment too much to heart. At the end of the day it's hard to have an opinion until everythings laid out infront of you and you see the game running on a good PC yourself.

I'm just saying Howard could of grouped all platforms just so it'd be simpler to talk about and also somehow get across the graphics in base form is good. I'm not sure if he expected PC gamers to start taking the comment in multiple directions.

In well certainty he probablly assumed saying PC has higher textures would put any fears of an inferior PC product to rest.

This is all just a guess though

(Not bad for commenting through a cell phone eh?)
