Skyrim looks a bit small?

Post » Tue Oct 11, 2011 2:56 pm

As you may already know, a map of Skyrim has been released. I'm curious though, is the Skyrim world going to be smaller than Oblivion? Or are they around the same size? I was curious about this because when I watched the gameplay of them going up into the mountains, the mountains didn't look that far away. In fact, you could clearly see the dragon from what seems like it should be a considerable distance.

This has been done to death. And no, to answer your question. If you were to flatten out the mountains, Skyrim is around 20% larger.

It terms of area i do think that it is slightly smaller... but with the different elevations in the terrain I think it has a larger surface area.

Same size as Oblivion roughly, but it will feel a lot bigger due to the mountains and the hand-crafted dungeons.

Strange, the map (With all that roads, settlements, mountains and bodies of water) made Skyrim seems bigger to me.

Yeah, It will feel a lot bigger due to having much more content in that space than oblivion had

The mountains are suppose to be explorable and have much content in them etc..So it's not just mountains you see in the background. Todd Howard exposed a lot in the demo, if you listened.

This game is huge, it's way bigger than most single player RPG's, it might be the biggest (hand crafted) RPG world ever. So what are you talking about?

It's been stated to be around Oblivion's size, maybe a little smaller.

Skyrim is, for all intents and purposes, the same size as Oblivion. The differences come into play when you think of how far you could go in Oblivion and find jack [censored], while in Skyrim the content will be more dense and we'll find more things strewn about the map. I'd say it's a better trade-off, why have a bigger area to explore if there isn't all that much worthwhile within it?

It may seem small I guess, but some of the individuals who played the demos said they ran for 5-10 minutes straight to get to Riverwood from where they started. That seems like a big world to me

Even if it is small, it will actually feel big. Travel isn't going to be as easy as it was in OB.

Its not the size of the map but how you populate it. :)

Seriously though I think it looks like a good balance. I like maps where things are far enough apart to give the illusion of epic size but not so far as to make the game a boring wasteland of nothing but walking/riding.

Obviously many people still find it interesting enough to talk about. I didn't come in here saying "GUYS, I HAVE A ORIGINAL TOPIC FOR YOU TO DISCUSS!", I came in here to get information. Also, I'm getting many different answers in this thread with no real source either.

You wouldn't have even known if it wasn't for him and to answer your first question, Todd said in an interview that it's 20% larger when you flatten out the mountains.

It seems bigger to me.

My one real hope/concern is that given there are 9 districts, I hope they feel big enough to give them chance to be distinct.

Who cares anyway, its a new Elder Scrolls game!
