Skyrim Looks Much Better Than Oblivion......

Post » Thu May 19, 2011 10:21 am

Fine whatever. I normally don't care for petty arguements on a forum but I'm in an antagonistic mood and kept concious by coffee. I understand some peoples desire to always have the "right" opinion.
Yeah I assumed cultist is an insult. I don't associate cult or cultist with compliment and I probably never will. Especially when you say I must be hopped up on cultist juice or whatever to have the opinion that I do. Thanks for clearing that up by saying it was a compliment to make me look like the bad guy here when you're clearly just trying to cop out the fact that you flat out insulted me. Whatever I don't care my feeling aren't hurt or anything it just grinds my gears, everyone can get back to discussing the topic at hand.
Do I think it looks better than skyrim yeah I think it does from what I've seen so far.

There seems to be allot of people unwilling to accept the fact that Morrowind is a decade old and is well a truly surpassed in most aspects. I really don't understand why. Other then to suggest that perhaps there is allot of deranged fanatical boys?

Its a great game for sure. But its like comparing Doom and Doom 3. Same exact game with different pictures.

Gameplay wise it'll be far surpassed but talking merely about looks the morrowind overhaul makes it look better or at least on par with skyrim aesthetically. (we're talking the morrowind overhaul here if you didn't realize not vanilla game lol not contest there)
Of course Skyrim will have better animations and smoother models etc because it's being made professionally with a modern engine and stuff but it is impressive that you can even compare the two at all.
Btw I'm not a "deranged fanatical boy" as you so cleverly put it. I never even picked up morrowind for years until I saw that mod.

Not so long as I'm considered a cultist for having an opinion I'm afraid.

The thing is though, he's right. It doesn't look near as good as Skyrim.

And honestly, I am as big of a Morrowind fan as you can possibly get. I own 6 copies of Morrowind, I have put over 2 THOUSAND hours into Morrowind, I think Morrowind is a better game than Oblivion in almost every conceivable way, yet I can safely say modded Morrowind doesn't look better than Skyrim. Just give up.
There are opinions, and then there are facts.

Yeah maybe it is better and I got carried away (hurray for caffeine induced ranting) <_< but the overhaul brings it pretty darn close.
god dammit I feel like such an ass now and I'm probably getting a warning lol

im continually amazed at what modders can do. im reinstalling morrowind right now. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2r6hilB6Dlc
I agree. That was the same video I was watching earlier today, coincidentally. I too, believe that TESIII with mods looks better than TESIV with mods and vanilla TESV...... so far.

Skyrim, or more specifically what we've been shown of it, is visually way better looking than the MW overhaul. That's not a bad thing either. It just means Bethesda has used the last 10 years wisely. Visually speaking, modded Morrowind blows away modded Oblivion except for with NPCs, where again Skyrim blows them both clean out of the water.

As far as the tangent - cult is generally considered a negative term. Sect is a bit less problematic.

Is there any point in keeping this open, or are the insults and problems going to start back up again?

People will have different opinions about which is "better", it really depends on the personal likes/dislikes.

Please keep the discussion within the forum rules, and if problems start, use the report button please.

I wasn't directing it at you, just at that crowd in general.

That overhaul looks really nice for Morrowind. But it doesn't have the same gritty windswept, sweaty feel that Skyrim has.
This may sound silly, but graphical quality isn't all about polygon county and how shiny you can make the water. IMO its 80% contrast and theme. This is where I feel Morrowind lacks. It feels as if you're running through levels of Mario Bro's with the rate that the scenery changes and often there is no logical reason for the black and white difference between two regions. Its not natural at all.

To me, this makes little difference in games. But seeing as though there is such an emphasis on this forum about it, and so many threads on the topic. I decided to form my own opinion (as opposed to regurgitating someone else's, which seems popular) and base it on some tangible facts.

shoot away.

I thought morrowind kept a really consistent theme even with the scenery changes. It felt alot like traveling a vast area to oblivions almost identical no matter where you are scenery but yeah skyrim does look better....
ffs and I went on such a tirade about how it was better (again it was the caffeine...i swear i wasn't just in a pissy mood..). I think theuglyguy was right when he was talking about fan blinders.... lol now I have to pm him and apologize.

Yes, modded Morrowind looks better than Skyrim does in my opinion.

But...

Modded Oblivion > Modded Morrowind > Skyrim

and in a few years time it'll be:

Modded Skyrim > Modded Oblivion > Modded Morrowind.

Anyway, that video really puts me in the mood for playing Morrowind again. Debates about which looks better aside, you have to admit, for a game that's nearly ten years old modders have done an amazing job of keeping it up to date. If anyone needed proof of just how awesome mods are in the elder scrolls series, overhauled Morrowind and Nehrim: At Fate's Edge are the two best examples.

If you walk 20ft north of Seeyda neen you'll go across a bridge, one side of the bridge is lush green marsh land, the other a barren ash land. None too subtle.

Yeah the transition from the ashlands wasn't always all that subtle I agree but I don't really notice that all that much tbh. I didn't find it all that unbelievable either, considering volcanic wasteland probably isn't really a good place for things to grow there would be an abrupt end to it where things can grow. Just like the treeline irl.

Modded Oblivion>Modded Morrowind

Also, the general animations and fluidity issues with Morrowind can't really be fixed by mods. Great game though, especially for its time.

and modded skyrim> modded everything, so what's the problem :P?

( I will still get it for my box, that thing is just, I LOVE MY BOX)

The new Morrowind looks awesome, but the bodies/faces still don't work for me. Anyways, I think Skyrim will be better graphically, though gameplay wise I'm not sure, Oblivion was a massive step back in that regard, so it's iffy.
