I'm curious why everyone think the game after Skyrim will be based in Summerset Isle. There are still many other places to go. None of the games have gone into Black Marsh, Elsweyr, Valenwood, or Summerset Isle, among others, so why there? (With the exception of Arena which was Tamriel)

I hope you only refer to the copying of Tolkien concepts by other fantasy writers, especially concerning games. There is not any game out there yet that does Tolkien's books even remotely justice. All of them just used the LotR license as a money-maker, they make a generic fantasy game and slap the LotR theme on it and it sells. The lore means nothing to them. And yes, that includes LotRO, with their stupid ridable WoW Giant Goats and Runekeeper (mage class) that have no place at all in Tolkien's universe, and their general WoW-ish game concept.

Besides, Tolkien's true masterwork is the Silmarillion, with all the stories from the First and Second Age. Those haven't been touched by anyone yet, since Christopher Tolkien will not allow anyone for as long as legally possible. The 'Tolkien horse' is far from dead, the cheap rip offs and parasites are dead.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

Gotta say, the modern fantasy genre wouldn't be what it is without The Lord of The Ring and Tolkien

Fantasy would have done just fine without Tolkien.

How can you be so sure?

Oh don't worry, I agree with everything you said, and yes that is what I meant with the dead horse... I have been defending Tolkien here for some time now. It's surprising me how little credit some are willing to give the man considering everyone here consider themselves fantasy fans.

Skyrim is two towers

Skyrim is the culmination of the first five, so Skyrim would be Return of the King ;)

One thing from LOTR I REALLY want in Skyrim is some huge Dwemer underground cities like Moria or the ones in DA:O.

So very true. And possibly the one LotR game that could have done it justice, was "put in the freezer".

Comparing Skyrim or Game of Thrones to Tolkien is like comparing the Star Wars series to Dune: they may all have their merits, but some are very cool while the "originals" are incredibly powerful innately.

I'm a new LOTRO player and even though I LOVE The Elder Scrolls series and have played it since 2003, lotro has hundreds of things I wish ES had. I regret not playing lotro before. I thought it would be another cartoony colorful game like WoW. The lotro map is one of the biggest in a video game second only to Daggerfall. Bethesda should take a look at lotro and see how they have done certain things. Pure, hardcoe rpg there.

Every modern fantasy book or game or movie is based on Tolkien. So is Skyrim.

Wrong.

...Orcs and hobbits were created directly by Tolkien...

Wrong ... Orcs existed far before Tolkien. They were already mentioned in http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beowulf.

Well Tolkien did start the genre, it's only smart to make similarites. That being said, Bethesda has created their own world, with it's own lore. Tolkien's influence is there, but Bethesda has done a nice job crafting a very unique game world.

Not really, where did the orcs come from? The elves with pointy ears and blonde hair?? TES is definetly influenced by tolkien as they have made several easter eggs refering to lotr...

It uses the same setting with a different world. Blaming it for that is like blaming fiction for drawing from reality. Good works that establish a new, unique setting should be praised for their originality, but faulting those that don't is foolish.

Orcs were already mentionned in Beowulf, as I said before. But yes, Tolkien developed them a lot.

No Tolkien didn't satrt the genre, but he was one of the fathers of the genre. Don't forget people like http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_E._Howard.

A lot of fantasy may have been inspired by Tolkien, however, remember that Tolken was inspired by mythology, to include Norse mythology.

"Tolkien was much inspired by early Germanic, especially Old English literature, poetry, and mythology, which were his chosen and much-loved areas of expertise. These sources of inspiration included Old English literature such as Beowulf, Norse sagas such as the Volsunga saga and the Hervarar saga,[119] the Poetic Edda, the Prose Edda, the Nibelungenlied, and numerous other culturally related works."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J._R._R._Tolkien#Influences

Recognizing this concept makes it easier for one to compare the Nords of Skyrim, who were inspired by the Norse of Earth, to Toklien references.

The bottom line is that Tolkien and Skyrim were both somewhat inspired, at the core, by Norse mythology, as well as other sources.
