You're saying that as if Tolkien hasn't already influenced every single fantasy setting ever.

I prefer to think of it as sharing more similarities with Game of Thrones. Epic series.

I wrote about future games specifically. But ofcourse Tolkien influenced almost countless game and movie directors before :celebration:

Tolkien inspired pretty much all modern fantasy. Of course there will be lots of similarities.

I'd disagree. The fantasy elements in A Game of Thrones are very low-key. This is not so with Skyrim.

Yes, that's true. I'm just saying that Game of Thrones is a fantasy series that is heavily based on the Nordic culture, mixed with fantasy. The catchphrase for the show was the ominous warning that "Winter is coming..." for Pete's sake.

I only watched the first episode. It didn't really impress me.

Apart from naming that has evolved a bit since LOTR which was more or a literal discription of the place in the name "Mount Doom" a mountine of doom  preaty much all things to do with fantasy can have somthing that seems like it was from LOTR after all it was LOTR that started the genre.

Unfortunately, you are correct. I prefer it more subtle, but that isn't the way :tes: likes it. Both depictions of fantasy are nice though.

Not really. Ones Earth, the others Nirn. ES even goes out of its way to differentiate itself from typical, or Tolkien fantasy.

Tolkien hardly made his stuff out of whole cloth. Very little of his setting was truly new, it was rehashed celtic and norse/germanic myths and legends.

His real achievement was the Silmarillion and the languages he developed, not LotR.

Honestly I think Skyrim is more Prose Edda than Tolkein.

You should really consider giving it a second shot. The first is kind of an odd one. The rest of the series is way more subtle with it's fantasy,, and that's the real appeal to the show imho. Instead of making magic and fantasy the main attraction, they decided to focus on the human story, and just add in a splash or two of fantasy. It's just different then most other forms of fantasy entertainment where OMG DRAGONS, EXPLOSIONS AND MAGICS AND STUFF distracts from the storytelling.

This is not a rip on LOTR. LOTR is awesome in it's own way.

I agree with this a lot of The Elder Scrolls spins a unique twist on the typical fantasy norms.
