Is Skyrim made for PC, or will it be a console port?

Post » Thu May 20, 2010 2:10 pm

Its totally a PC port, its made for the xbox, just because it was developed on the PC doesnt make it a PC game first. Its a sad sad thing really :sadvaultboy:

While I agree, I just thinks it's fishy how R* just abandoned the PC after GTA IV though. No RDR? No LA Noire? Why?

Read Dead Revolver also wasn't for PC. It's like complaining why Halo never came for PC... Ok, it came, but it was god awful, and hardly a sales hit. Some series are just made purely for consoles, like MGS, SMT, etc...

It's a shame LA Noire won't be coming for PC, at least for a while, but they never said it would be coming for the PC...

Yes!

Haha! Good one...

All games are developed on PC, consoles just don't have the tools or computing power to do that kind of work. It would be like trying to race in the Indy 500 with a Volkswagen Beetle.
IIRC, most of the engine code was written around the XBox 360's hardware. The actual game content on the other hand is likely to have been created on the PC, using the CK.

Skyrim on PC will be a console port. It's not a true PC game like The Witcher 2 or Battlefield 3. There will obviously be some benefits such as AA, AAA, high resolution textures, and resolution. Ultimately though, the game experience and quality will be roughly the same throughout all platforms.

If you would just listen to what Todd is saying, then you would know how it's being developed.

The game is being developed on the PC. (Assets, Models, Textures, World Construction, Art, etc.)

The graphics are then ported to the 360 for optimization(Getting the game to run fast). Those optimizations are then ported back to the PC and PS3.

Fan of the Witcher? Who would have guessed?

Yeah I thought that too. I think when they say developed for consoles they are refering to the hardware it was designed amd optimized for the most not the platform used to create it.
I dont know what goes into developing a game but I cant see them actually making it on am xbox lol.

I suggest everyone prattling on about "Teh graphix dawg" go over to the escapist and watch the Extra Credits from today. It's exactly why I think Skyrim looks better than The Witcher II, despite obviously having worse "Graphics".

That makes me sad :( It's not just graphics, the problem with going from console to PC also lies in performance. The vanilla Oblivion UI wouldn't have passed 5 years prior, but it was the best that could be managed for a console's limited hardware, and was never upgraded for PC. Also, despite the fact that Morrowind and Daggerfall had massively-populated worlds, consoles can't handle it, so Oblivion cities are populated by all of a few dozen NPCs. I want Skyrim to be amazing, I really do. And credit where it's due, Bethesda can always write a great story, regardless of the game's quality. I just don't want to see Skyrim need years of modding development before it stops feeling like console game.

This does not make sense, Morrowind was handled fine on the xbox, and assassins creed has numerous npcs in a single city, with better graphics than both, lets get a bit more realistic.

Bad AI and lack of population is a console feature now? What?

Didn't Todd actually say in one of the recent interviews that is primarily made for PC then ported to the two consoles, hence why PC versions ship with higher rez textures....

I thought we had beaten this topic to death already?

Not really. He actually said most of the Graphical work is done originally on the 360. But Todd did say, because of their PC gaming origin, they're doing GUI and other important-but-not-graphical stuff specific for the PC. So probably not making the Menu "Baby's first RPG" like the Oblivion UI was, Oblivion's UI was actually a lot less intuitive on the PC, which is damn near treason. I don't know if it's fair to call either the PC or Xbox360 version a port of one another, both have things that had to be done specifically for them.

If people bothered to read and watch the interviews Todd has made throughout April, you would know that it will NOT be a port. It is being made with the PC in mind, and then will be scaled down for the consoles.

Yeah, that's why the PC version is getting DX11 goodies like tesselation, will use CPU-crunching advanced AI, will have memory-intensive features like open cities, and.. oh wait.

Sorry, the game is being developed for the lowest common denominator, and while the PC might get a couple goodies (higher res textures, a different UI), it's hardly being developed for the PC and scaled down on the consoles later.
