Is Skyrim made for PC, or will it be a console port?

Post » Thu May 20, 2010 4:30 am

I believe it's a fair question, seeing as Oblivion was a console port, and it showed (very flawed GUI, lackluster AI and population, etc.). So I would genuinely like to know; is Skyrim made for PC and then dumbed down for consoles, or made for console and left sub-par for PCs?

It is my understanding that it is being developed on the Xbox360 because it is apparently 'easier to develop for'. However, Bethesda have said many a time that they plan all three platforms to look the same graphically and in terms of GUI. PC's get the advantage of DX11 support. This support is limited, I understand. Basically as Todd Howard put it, it is a DX9 game making use of the DX11's better performance.

Since they show everything on Xbox, it's fair to assume it's a port. But it's not the case. If they want to do it correctly, they will.

And there was a dozen of similar threads, use search.

It's being developed on the 360, ported to PS3 and PC.

That makes me sad :( It's not just graphics, the problem with going from console to PC also lies in performance. The vanilla Oblivion UI wouldn't have passed 5 years prior, but it was the best that could be managed for a console's limited hardware, and was never upgraded for PC. Also, despite the fact that Morrowind and Daggerfall had massively-populated worlds, consoles can't handle it, so Oblivion cities are populated by all of a few dozen NPCs. I want Skyrim to be amazing, I really do. And credit where it's due, Bethesda can always write a great story, regardless of the game's quality. I just don't want to see Skyrim need years of modding development before it stops feeling like console game.

If people bothered to read and watch the interviews Todd has made throughout April, you would know that it will NOT be a port. It is being made with the PC in mind, and then will be scaled down for the consoles. If anything, the fact that it looks this good on the Xbox makes me eager to see how badass it will look on my rig.

Depends on your definition of a port. It's mostly being developed on the 360 - but the PC version will certainly have some unique differences.

This seems contrary to what everyone above has stated. And while this would be awesome, I retain health skepticism, since the issue with console ports is also performance.

Because Todd never said that.

I agree immortal D, but it way too late for this conversation, and in any case its not like skyrim wont be the best game ever, its just that it could have been so much better if it were PC first, but its freaking TES 5, not even the witcher 2 will touch it because as awesome as it is the witcher 2 remains in the category of those games where you highlight enemies and click to watch your character do an attack sequence, and camera is not controlled with the mouse

In other words skyrim is by default better gameplay and immersion wise since you control your character 100% directly even in 3rd person (which is what I play TES games in)

Actually, it's being developed on the PC then ported to the 360 and PS3. The construction set won't run on anything but a PC.

So ...everyone that never even been on Bethesda Studios > the executive developer?

Don't believe me? read and watch the interviews. In fact, if you haven't, shame on you...

Sure, the fact that there are loading screens IS because of consoles, but that's about it. I very much believe Skyrim will be as much of a port as GTA IV is, and believe, that game's PC version is anything but a console port.

What? GTA IV is a terrible port on the PC. Probably why R* didn't bother porting RDR and LA Noire is console exclusive.

It will be an option, not the standard. Just like Oblivion and Fallout 3.

Did you really play it on the PC? R* spent 6 months upgrading the graphics for the PC, and boy, is the game shiny... Unless you have a crappy pc, there's no reason you can say that.

First and third. We've had this option since Morrowind. Also, 360 is their lead platform. They develop them all at the same time.

All games are developed on PC, consoles just don't have the tools or computing power to do that kind of work. It would be like trying to race in the Indy 500 with a Volkswagen Beetle.

The technical issues were terrible when the PC version was released. Don't even tell me otherwise because i'm looking at all the reported issues from steam and R* themselves right now.

Well seems we need again to polish game to be real PC game with mods, at last now I hope it will be much less time and work consumable since devs says thats many flaws of previous games was fixed and there will be specially designed UI for PC and inbuilt but not used support of DX11 features.

Yes, it had launch issues. They fixed them. It is good now... All game's have bugs. Some more then others. Game's with such an open world as GTA and TES is bound to have a few unchecked that can cause some big damage. Nothing a patch can't clear out.

While I agree, I just thinks it's fishy how R* just abandoned the PC after GTA IV though. No RDR? No LA Noire? Why?
