Skyrim to more like morrowind or oblivion?

Post » Thu Aug 12, 2010 7:23 pm

I cant help but notice that people are always saying morrowind is better than oblivion and because of this i got morrowind and it is ....... AMAZING! but there are things from oblivion that i wish where on morrowind like the compass and stuff like that BUT im glad fast travel isnt on it is very enjoyable to travel around on morrowind which is rare for games. BUT BUT BUT i cant see why people think text base talk can EVEN shine a light to voice convosation i much prefer things getting read out to me. So back to the subject of this forum. with the hope that the devs are listening what would you like skyrim be more like?

Skyrim...

Honestly I want the better things from both. (Improved combat from Oblivion, BOTH fast travel and alternate like silt striders)

The thing is voice actors cost money and you can have so much more information given to you with text based dialogue.

I loved how you could explore in morrowind and the overall experience was a lot more immersing however combat was well ok but I really liked oblivion combat better, voice acting wasn't a major problem for me, I kind of liked the text based thing because it allows more "dialogue" options and a variety of them... Im hoping it will be more like morrowind, but still keeping some of the good parts of oblivion (nay on the fast travel however).

These polls are pointless, we don't even have information to answer have the polls that put up on here. Just wait ONLY 4 MORE DAYS 'till the Game Informer is released so we can have facts not endless speculation. :)

The main reason people want morrowind is that level scaling was wrongly implemented in oblivion, which makes level scaling look like worse alternative to completely static dungeons from morrowind. I'm now playing Fran's mod, and it's in my opinion better than both oblivion and morrowinds system. It keeps level scaling, but it's way more subtle. High level equipment is always rare, and there's a lot more creature variety in dungeons. For example, at level 1 you have goblins and some goblin skirmishers in caves, and sometimes (if you're unlucky) a goblin berserker. Whereas in vanilla you'd have all goblins and maybe a single goblin skirmisher as a boss.

Just like I went through a cave with decently powerful bandits (not too much), and it ended in a named boss NPC that was simply too strong. Makes you feel a lot better when at level 10 you can take down that named boss.

So basically, I'd like the ideas (level scaling, quest markers within reasonable bounds, more quality quests even if it means fewer quests) of oblivion, but correctly implemented.

Because, few people have played them... :/ and the attack controls will drive some people mad... However, I hear that in dagger fall when you commit crimes you get taken to court.<--- that would be awesome for skyrim.

Beats me, those two games were great in their own right.

so if you know its too late in development to change anything significant what the heck is the point of this thread, which has been done in excess?

The game will stand alone. It won't be like Morrowind nor Oblivion. I don't know why anyone would want a rehash. Chances are this one is going to be completely new, new engine, new animations, new everything. That doesn't mean it won't borrow aspects from previous games, but it certainly won't just be a re-packaged version of previous games.

Why doesn't Daggerfall or Arena get brought up in these threads?

People don't play them, despite their being free for 6 years, in Arena's case, and over a year, in Daggerfall's case. If people supposedly hated Oblivion's fast-travel and setting, however, they probably wouldn't care. Basically, this isn't an Elder Scrolls fan forum, it's a Morrowind fan forum with some Oblivion fans sprinkled in. Both have members that don't care at all about the series and/or just a want a sequel to their preferred game, hence we have threads like these which typically lean towards Morrowind because the majority of the forum members, here, started with Morrowind and Oblivion gets thrown in because some people started with Oblivion, instead (start a "Which Elder Scrolls game did you start with and which is your favorite?" thread with a poll and take a look at the correlating results). Arena and Daggerfall are never included because, as I said, this isn't really an Elder Scrolls fan forum, at many times. People don't understand the change that constantly occurs within the series, they don't know much of anything related to the older games (Cyrodiil started off as a forest, fast-travel came from older Elder Scrolls games, and "generic fantasy" settings are standard for the series... as are competitions involving fans of an older game and fans of a newer game, usually with the fans of the older game initiating the attack on the newer game), and people don't seem to even notice their existence, at times. I could swear some people see the "III" in TES III as a "I" and the "IV" in TES IV as a "II", and sometimes as a "I". The tradition will likely continue and, depending on how long the series continues for, Morrowind and Oblivion may also join the ranks of the untouchables of the Elder Scrolls universe.

Well, that's my theory, anyway.

These polls are silly. Plenty of people will have only played one of the two games and will naturally default to that one, and on top of that you give the moderate "both" option which kind of eliminates the point of trying to find a majority.

To answer your question however, using my patented generic response: I want Skyrim [to be] Skyrim, first and foremost - marinated in the juices of the atmosphere of Morrowind, with a light sprinkling of the complexity of Daggerfall.

I personally believe that Oblivion had everything good about Morrowind with added benefits. Oblivion had a better combat system, voice overs which immersed you more in the game and of course the graphics. The main thing that was lacking in Oblivion was that the main quest lines story was good but it wasn't nearly as fleshed out as Morrowind's which was most of the game content. Oblivion was the opposite, it may have had a lacking main story line compared to Morrowind but the content in Oblivion was more encompassing with all the side quests and what not. The only things I didn't like about Oblivion was the mobs that leveled with you and Fast Travel. I know Fast Travel was nice sometimes when you really feel like you want to get somewhere faster but it also deprived you of seeing a lot of the gorgeous Cyrodiil. I really think most people like Morrowind better because they remember how it felt to get into the massive 3d world for the first time. This feeling just dulls Oblivion to some people. But if people think about it, they really did improve Morrowind dramatically with Oblivion yet not truly being Morrowind. Now with Skyrim they should make a game which improves both on Morrowind and Oblivion.

What I see most people complain about with Oblivion is the Voice overs only having a few actors and problems with AI. Well the AI system was state of the art and no one else was using such an advanced system so basically Oblivion was a testing ground for the AI system which will no doubt be insanely great in Skyrim. Also the Voice over system on such a huge scale was never done before too and they had to be cautious when doing that too so they didn't blow insane amounts of money on dozens of voice actors and then the game be a flop. After nearly going bankrupt they couldn't be reckless. I for one loved Arena and Daggerfall but they are a little out of date to use much from them, though there are some systems I would love to return from them. Also Bethesda, could we get Werewolves and Vampires in the same game from launch? We all love that and maybe throw in a transcendence to Lichdom system in too if you have time =D

This forum is filled with old school Morrowind to Daggerfall players who love everything about those games and are still playing them even now so this poll is going to be be very biased.

Short Attention Span Syndrome. We're lucky we can find people who remember as far back as Morrowind. And that still doesn't save us from the hordes who think (Despite the obvious "TES IV") that Oblivion was the first TES game, and :cringe: the standard by which all TES games should be measured. :D

More like Morrowind. Of course Oblivion has its own peaks (stealth, physics, npcs) that should be kept and improved, but for me Morrowind was better in most important aspects for an rpg (story, depth, dialogue, choices, progression, rewards, customization).

Exactly!

The less hand holding there is the more rewarding the progression and success is.

Edit: I do not mind getting killed, deprived, set back, or lost, until I figure what I did wrong.

And I do not mind starting a new character, with better character development strategy in mind so that I can overcome the game's demanding mechanism and environment.

In such a game, I feel more rewarded and satisfied when I can reach the places where I could not before, and when I can achieve goald which seemed impossible before, and so on...

A store speculating the price of a game that'll be released almost a year from now? Excuse me if i don't light my pitchfork on fire just yet.

I think I will choose Daggerfall. By far my favourite TES game.

I want Skyrim to be more like ummm...Skyrim. Both Oblivion and Morrowind were very good games for their day, but now it's Skyrim's turn, let's just leave it at that.
