Skyrim - more mature than Oblivion?

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 6:38 am

I recently installed Oblivion, after not playing it for a few years. And I found it extremely childish in comparison to Fallout 3, which I played a lot recently. So much, that I couldnt force myself to replay Oblivion, even though I very much enjoyed it back then after its release.

So, do you think characters in Skyrim will age together with its gamer audience, or will stay Oblivion-style?

Judging by screenshots 1st option is more probable, but maybe i'm not following press releases good enough.

Hi, by the way, i'm new here :)

That's one way of looking at it. Another is that Fallout 3 was over-the-top with gratuitous gore (arms and legs flying off when someone is shot in the head, for instance) and sixual references.
I'd prefer Skyrim to stay more "Elder Scrolls Style" than shift to a more Fallout 3 "We are teh mature and we will beet u over teh head with flying body parts and boobie jokes to proves it lol" feel.

I think they meant to make everyone proper and (due to the time) less violent than in Fallout.
Its two entirely different settings.

Welcome to the official BS forum. I'm new too so I'cant give you a fish stick (I never have mine... :( ), but someone will do.

Skyrim will be more mature than Oblivion, I'm sure... Even in the gameplay, with the finish moves and all...

I agree, and it seems like Skyrim has the best of both worlds. Rugged like the Wastelands but also not trying too hard to be extra bloody and sixualized.

The gore in FO 3 certainly wouldn't fit TES (IMO before someone jumps in and says we must have dismemberment) but I can't recall it containing any more sixual references than Oblivion. MW certainly had more six than either if you include the books.

i hope it grows w/ its audience because i played morrowind when i was like 12 and now i'm 20! i have always appreciated games that were realistic (mature). many games now are very gory and etc and gory games imo are realistic and i'm all for it. i also played oblivion recently and i can't play it anymore since skyrim is coming out and i'll just be DISAPPOINTED if i play oblivion after watching skyrim videos... >.<

There may not have been more, but they were certainly more...disturbing. Although a lot of that may have been the presence of ghouls and associated references. Only thing in TES that came close to those was Falanu Hlaalu's question. ;)

It seems to me as if they are aiming for skyrim to be more hard and rugged than Oblivion. The land itself is less welcoming, so that in itself sets the tone for the game, which is lovely. I don't however think anyone wanna see fallout 3's level of silly gore that really seemed more childish than Oblivions over use of bloom

Define "mature". I don't see where people get the idea that a darker, bleaker, or more blood-filled game is more mature, yet those things constantly get brought up. If maturity means wallowing in depressing settings and mindlessly blasting people's brains out, I'd very much like to stay immature for the rest of my life.

For me, "best" maturity is a character maturity. So I mostly meant character development and interaction, that is better done in F3. While most of npcs in Oblivion look like, speak like and behave like upscaled 12-year olds :) So its really not inspiring to do quests for such entities at my age :)

As for gore, i'm fine with either way, not paying too much attention to it.

I don't know. The "Lusty Argonian Maid" was pretty freaking disturbing :(

Yes, I agree with you here. Actually, I don't exactly get what was immature with Oblivion... However, I think Skyrim might be more "mature" than TES IV then, seeing that it will be a lot more like Fallout 3 now. I don't really care, to be honest: I enjoyed Oblivion, I enjoyed Fallout 3. I will enjoy Skyrim.

Childish? I think you're forgetting about the hidden darker side of Oblivion... like, remember the guy who sold his mother's life to the dark brotherhood so that they'd agree to stage his death? or maybe all the bodies pinned up on the walls of the imperial city sewers? Remember all the twisted torture stuff you could find hidden in Castles during the thieves guild quests? What about... (SPOILER) the guy who had his mother's rotten head on a plate hidden beneath the lighthouse in Anvil?...Not to mention, The Lusty Argonian Maid. Oblivion is certainly nicer and more pleasant on the surface than Fallout, but it's not in any way childish.

I took that one further and sold my copy of Oblivion recently. I can't play it anymore I've beaten it so hard. With every type of character you could ever imagine. I once made a Breton ninja who used heavy armor...and guess what? It was my BEST BUILD EVER >.<

Anyway yeah can't play OB anymore either. Never played Morrowind but I'm borrowing it from a friend to prepare for Skyrim.

Also, does anyone else think a forum like this should really have a custom spell-check filter?

But that is the charm of Fallout, it was never meant to be taken seriously its not Sopranos.

I guess you are unfamiliar with what Daggerfall was like....prostitution aplenty and many sixual references. Personally I prefer gritty games, especially in a Nordic world. Oblivion was far too childish, Morrowind was decent...and Fallout 3 was good. How can you play a character in the gritty underworld (thief or assassin) if things are so clean and child friendly around. Of course, I don't care to see travelers on meathooks all over like in Fallout 3.

Then just on the surface. Actually it is only the characters.
Also this video gives great insight to AI design.

"They're my actors, they're my children. They have to behave properly"

I know I'm taking it out of context. I think it's not a case of maturity or blood and gore or six but about seeing similar overjoyed personalities everywhere with same voice actors. Their funny/weird/scary/ugly faces aren't helping.
