Skyrim on multiple discs for the xbox 360?

Post » Tue Feb 09, 2010 7:10 am

LMAO?

Seriously?

People expect companies to cater to them without even having a SMALL HDD? I'm sorry, but that's ridiculous.

I agree it's ridicuolus. It's very easy to get a 60GB, 120GB or even 250GB harddrive. Heck just pay the extra 100 to get the 360 with the 250 GB harddrive. Beth shouldn't cater to nobody, if you have a small harddrive that's your fault for being svckered in by Microsoft.

I agree.

I've said it before, and I'll say it now. Gaming is a hobby. If people really can't afford to properly fund this hobby, then they have bigger priorities. Companies should not cater to things as simple as not having even the smallest of HDD's.

Right. A game like Skyrim would be unplayable without some way of saving. Do all these people without hard drives use memory cards? What's the biggest memory card out there? It can't be enough for many game saves or profiles, right? When I bought a 360, I got the "arcade" edition (no hard drive), expecting to pay another 100 for a hard drive. The total was 300 at the time, but I think they're cheaper now.

I'd like to see a poll of 360 players to see how many play without a hard drive. I'm interested, now.

And then you lose the one advantage consoles have - "It'll work for sure"? No, microsoft would never allow it.

I also find it pretty hilarious that you consider buying a bigger hard drive a solution, and having bought a 360 with a small drive being "svckered in", when microsoft charge prices for their drives that were unreasonable 6 years ago. (For example, you can buy a 1TB drive for not just less, but significantly less, than a new 250GB drive for the 360 - now THAT'S being svckered in)

Companies should make as much profit as they can (that's what they want anyway), and catering to the part of the audience that doesn't have an HDD most likely does that.

Is it possible that multiple disks could become the norm because downloading games may be the thing of the future? If you wanted disks, it would cost more but you could get them. This could mean some very large games with more voice acting, etc. It would mean a new console cycle though so more systems would have hard drives and I think I just read that Nintendo wasn't planning a HD for its new system.

There are benefits to having a game installed to a 360 Harddrive and an extra 50-100 investment on getting a better Harddrive is a very easy thing to do. Actually I think it would be impossible to have Skyrim on multiple disks because of the size of the world. LA Noire's world will probably be big but nothing on the scale of Skyrim/Oblivion or Red Dead Redemption because of the 3 disks. You would need the world to be about 100% the same, good luck with that happening in Skyrim.

With forza 3 on the xbox 360 you had to install one disk before you played the game, then use the other to actually play it.

Edit: And as far as memory cards go, you can use any regular flash drive as a memory card now, so there's no problem. People can either go out and buy a new flashdrive or they could include one with the game. :)

I doubt it. Skyrim's an open-world game, there's no feasible way for them to seperate the content on two discs, unless they'd make installations mandatory, and then have the game running from one disc.

That said, L.A. Noire presumably needs that much space because all the facial animations were recorded in a studio, and they take up a rather hefty amount of the discs.

Heh, I remember back when Oblivion was in development and Microsoft had announced that one game was on 4 discs and some people on this forum were absolutely convinced it was Oblivion that would be on 4 discs. It wasn't, it was Lost Odyssey.

The TES games are all relatively small because of a number of reasons. The most important being the plug-in system which stores the game world in a relatively small amount of space, while game maps made in the Unreal 3 Engine can be quite large. Then the fact that the TES games barely have any cutscenes at all helps a lot too.

Todd H. earlier stated that they had issues fitting oblivion on to the xbox 360 disc. Further more he claimed that the reason they had so few voice-actors was due to the limits of disc space.

I never understood that quote. The spoken line will take up space no matter which voice actor they use. Unless they use someone that talk very fast (like the hero in Suikoden Tierkreis) which is very annoying). Not to mention that they were far from using the whole 360 disc space for Oblivion.

Check Pete's twitter, he confirmed that there will be one disk.

Indeed :)

Not ridiculous at all. Microsoft sold 360s without a hard drive, thus the 360 games are required to work without a hard drive.

I still think it's ridiculous. I just don't see how anyone can game without even a small HDD. Unless you plan on using just a memory card for saved data (does the 360 even use memory cards, I know the first Xbox did), and not have any DLC, or anything else that requires you to download it.

This would not work in an openworld game like this. It will all be on one disc.

Agree it's such a small investment compared to upgrading a PC in order to have a better gaming experience.

How does that work on multiple discs? o.O

Just going along then FREEZE, "Please insert Disc X."?

And whenever you come back to that area it'll do it again?

That would be awfully annoying.

You will probably install the other two before playing the game, like you did in Forza 3.

Will it fit on one Blu Ray? How crazy would it be if it was on multiple Blu Rays?

I say it should be. I think (don't quote on this) that an xbox disk can have like 16GBs on it, and a PS3 can have 40GB. 40GB imagine how epic skyrim would be then!

A PS3 Blu-Ray can hold up to 50 GB. 360 DVD hold 9 GB. If it was on two Blu-Rays, 360 players would get at least 6 disks.

Are you sure because I thought it was 6.8 GB with it increasing up to 7.8 GB later on this year.

It doesn't even matter that much, since you can always transfer the entire disc to your HDD. Even if you'd be prompted from time to time I wouldn't care too much, if it'd only be for some story missions like in Mass Effect 2. Riven (PS) had five discs I think.

It's not about having a different person speak the line, but having multiple people speak the same line. If I have 5 different voices that each do a "Hello"-type greeting, that is only 5 audio files they need for that. If there are 100 people in Burma, roughly 20 people would have the same voice, and all 100 people saying hello would still only take 5 audio files (with much repetition). If they now had 100 voice actors, each one would require an audio file for the "Hello"-type greeting. I now have 100 audio files, which will take about 50 times the space. Person A and Person B can (and usually did) usethe same audio files in Oblivion.

Team Bondi has already stated that the reason for L.A. Noire's large file size is due to the unique tech they use for capturing facial animations. Apparently the data for those animations takes up a lot of space.

Clearly, Bethesda is not using the same tech, so it makes zero sense to draw a comparison between the two. Todd has actually said their compression tech has markedly improved (allowing for more voice acting with less space), and that, combined with the 360's recent (if modest) increase in disk capacity means that Skyrim will almost definitely fit on a single DVD.

Oh god, I hope not. Multiple discs pretty guaranteed that I won't buy La Noire. That pretty much takes out all the fun of an open world game.
