Skyrim mystery: the weird chime-ish noise revealed.

Post » Tue Jun 05, 2012 5:01 am

Every since I bought this game at launch and while wandering I keep hearing this weird chime noise. It's fades in and out, chiming. Some people on here were also wondering what the hell that noise was. Some theorized it had something to do with Restoration magic, which I didn't understand.

But at last, after over 300 hours of gameplay and about 5 different characters, I have discovered the source of the noise: NIRNROOT!

Seriously. I have been confounded by this mysterious noise for months, and after slaying the cave troll before the road to Ivarstead, I found a glowing Nirnroot creating the chime noise. Wouldn't have guessed a plant was making the noise. But that's all for now, just thought that perhaps some people hadn't discovered this and were as confused as I.

Good job, would you like a cookie for discovering something that most people on this forum have known for months already?

I figured it out pretty early because I play with headphones.

Don't worry, it took me months to finally figure it out as well.

Now, something that I haven't figured out yet......

Whenever I wander around the Reach for the first time, there's a giant shaking and a crashing noise. It's not a dragon, because it's occurred before I started the main quest. I have no idea what it could be, and it hasn't happened in the same area twice, but it's ALWAYS in the Reach when there's a lot of fog, and it's never happened twice on the same character. Shedding any light on this would be appreciative.

I assume that noise means there's a troll in the area. If it's something else maybe someone else will tell us.

I figured the Nirnroot out pretty quickly and I think Ingun even tells you about it if/when you ask her where/how to find her ingredients. :P

I can't recall, she either mentions the chiming or the glowing. The chiming is definitely louder than it was in Oblivion, or maybe its just cause it seems I have to turn the volume up a bit more in Skyrim.

Definitely not a troll, though it's a close comparison. It's a shaking troll noise coupled with the screen shake of a dragon encounter...yet there's no dragon, no troll, and no enemy nearby. It's only happened in the Reach, and it's only happened once per character. It's as if the Graybeards are calling me...before I'm starting the main quest. And only in the Reach.

Have you ever gotten the noise out in the open (like where you can look around)? I've definitely experienced the shaking to which you're referring (a couple of hours ago even), but I've never looked around. The Reach is so rocky and mountainous I just assumed it was a troll out of view. :P

Slightly funny post, but I got started on TES with Oblivion and I recognized the sound immediately when I first heard it.

Hmph, I noticed that sound when I came to the bridge near the Honningbrew Meadery on the first trip to Whiterun. I looked around and finally under the bridge. A humming plant. I've never played TES games before, but WoW had Felweed that did that.

I thought this would be about that throbbing/tinkling sound that some or most dead casters emit. Fire mages continue to make a crackly/static-like sound, maybe frosties do, too.

 Knew it was nirnroot since oblivion, also playing with headphones helped. But seriously didn't you see the white glow when that sound was heard?

I'm still trying to find a winding fjord where i can hear the "Shrieking Winds" that are supposedly echoes of Lamae Beolfag/Bal.

When you first start a game and go through river wood the tree to your right when you cross the bridge is humming loudly and it's not the ninroot noise as I wear headphones and can tell the difference. I can't tell what it is

Oh, yeah, I remember that. I can't recall the sound offhand, but I think I recognized it. It wasn't bees, was it? I seem to recall expecting to find something in the tree but there was nothing there.

Nirnroot, one of the easiest things to find in Skyrim. Why?, perhaps its to do with the fact it glows with a massive white hue and makes a loud noise! :)

It took me short to figure it out only because I've been watching a play-through at about the same time I was playing with my first character. Without it, I'd hardly notice.

didn't you follow the noise to its source the 1st time you heard it? They also have a aura glow thats easily visible at night. It's so easy to find they might as well have a arrow floating above pointing at it

Not even close, that's barely heard. The Nirnroot sound is much stronger.
