Skyrim needs to be BIGGER than Cyrodiil

Post » Fri May 13, 2011 2:30 pm

Well I couldn't step more than a few paces away from a city in Oblivion, to find an unexplored ruin. It definitely needs to be bigger.

Strange... because i thought the points of interests was way more spread out than in Morrowind. I couldn't walk five steps without stepping on something important in Vvardenfell. But the terrible view distance and sluggish speed helped to mask that fact.

Oblivion was definitely significantly larger than Morrowind. Morrowind felt larger due to the shorter draw distance, but if you play it the graphic extension mods where the draw distance is unlimited, you realize that Vivec is just a very, very short walk from Seyda Neen, Balmora is just around the corner and through a foyada, etc. The important thing though, is that I remember Morrowind feeling larger than Oblivion, even though it most assuredly wasn't. So while I certainly don't want Skyrim to be the same size or smaller than Oblivion, I don't think it needs to be vastly larger if things like weather and terrain obscure our view of the province.

If it's wide open though, then yes, I agree that it needs to be quite a bit larger than Oblivion was.

All I ask is that you guys don't just ask for a huge but empty world. I want a world with character and meaning, for instance, not just size to say "It's 4 times bigger than Oblivion." I know what you are saying but I want quality over size :)

Seeing that Bethesday has gained much experience since Oblivion and technology has surged forward, a bigger Skyrim should happen.

size matters!

It's not the size, mate. It's how you use it.

Heh, sorry, had to.

I would definitely like to see a much larger map, and much greater distances between cities, and especially dungeons. In Oblivion you were tripping over caves and ruins.

I'd like to see it bigger. Cyrodiil was smaller than it was meant to be. I mean, it took a day to two to walk the breadth of Cyrodiil, a journey which should take a week or two.

If they make Skyrim as big as it should, they could re-visit Cyrodiil later in a GTA III -> GTA IV-esque update and make it larger and more intricate.

I'm not actually bothered by the size so much, but terrain must feel like terrain: Forest feel like forest, cyrodiil didn't have any forests... sort of.

The map gets bigger automatically if they make the different things feel like what they are supposed to be, instead of popping up random trees all over the place.

As to your argument, KorVegor, there are several points I would like to make. Firstly, this game has almost certainly been in production for a lot longer than most other games, so I suspect that if they wanted to creat a lot more content than in oblivion, that is not likely to be a problem. Also, as stated above - perhaps a little emptyish space between points of interest would be a good thing. As it was, distortions of distance, especially compared to what we as players can actually see, meant that places seemed improbably close together. Of course, a bustling wilderness would still be preferable to a deadland between.

It's been in production since the release of Fallout 3. Which means by the time of release, it has taken them 3 years. Which is a year (!) shorter than Oblivion. Their team has grown since then though, so that could make up for that year less in production. But it won't mean Skyrim wilkl be noticably bigger in any way.

I think Skyrim shouldn't be bigger but it needs more diversity. The content within Oblivion was somehow generic, the more you had explored the country the less exciting it was. It is unecessary to create dungeons that look always similar and that are only different in size and shape. Some more detail in this would do Skyrim good instead of a bigger map.

Actually production on Skyrim began a year before Fallout 3 was released.
