skyrim needs to be the most graphically impressive game for

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 10:59 pm

While I love great looking games, I'd rather it be fun to play instead of screenshot material. If the game is beautiful but boring, why bother. I realize that you can have the best of both worlds but being the best at anything is usually a pretty lofty goal. I'm fine with how it looks although I could certainly nitpick about some things (texture sizes, tesselation etc.) but I'd rather be sure that the gameplay is there. It is fundamental to a TES game, moreso than the graphics.

But why not have both? Everyone always argues that gameplay > graphics, and I agree, but they aren't mutually exclusive. Just by this guy saying he would like breathtaking graphics in Skyrim does not mean your gameplay will suffer. Personally, I would love a game with great graphics AND gameplay. Why settle?

Also, knowing this is an ES game, we all know the gameplay will be amazing, I think that is why there is so much focus on graphics. Oblivion really set a new bar for graphics when it came out, but Skyrim looks like it might only be the third or fourth best looking RPG of the year this year (graphically speaking of course). Then again, that could all change if what they have shown so far is only the console version like people believe. Maybe Bethesda is saving a trailer of the PC version as a surprise, and graphics WILL blow us all away!

OP: Whine on. You get close enough to anything in a game and it will look bad. Observe: http://www.techpowerup.com/img/08-01-16/590.jpg Check out the lower right hand corner. Jesus, that looks terrible. This is Crysis in Ultra (rez is scaled, but that wouldn't change the quality of the textures that much).

1- Graphics aren't the most important thing in the game.
2- The graphics in the trailer look incredible, and I'm sure the game will run on a higher res on PC
3- Skyrim is going to be the best game of all time, how about instead of being incredibly negative about the tinniest things we look at the bigger picture and realize that the effort is going into the right areas, and the game is going to feel alive.

I don't understand why everybody's being so negative! I remember somebody saying in a different thread ( I can't remember who, sorry, but kudos to you!) that no matter how good the trailer will be, people will criticize it and complain. I'm sorry Jack, but this is really just complaining.

I really don't see why people are complaining. The graphics look great to me. And the whole argument that it won't be immersive if it isn't totally photorealistic I find to be very, very silly. Many games with bad graphics have been very immersive.

Well, in order to be that, a game would have to use ray-tracing. Which is still a few graphics card generations away from being possible.

I still play Daggerfall, dude. You aren't converting me to the cause of your fanatical graphics crusade.

Making it as graphical as possible would mean most people can't play it. I don't support that kind of design.

that doesnt even make sense. you do realize there is this button in your game menu called "options"....its magical....... it lets you do things like use lower rez textures and change lighting and shadows and all sort of other cool stuff. its really neato. and its used by people all over the world that dont have cutting edge computers.

Look at this screen of 360's version of Crysis 2. It looks pretty average, to be honest. http://static.gamesradar.com/images/mb//GamesRadar/us/Games/C/Crysis%202/Bulk%20Viewers/360_PS3_PC/2011-02-25/CRYS2multiSCRNliberty--screenshot_viewer_medium.jpg
It is certainly not leagues above the shots of Skyrim. In fact, it is worse in some respects. Just check it out.

Given the restricted (not to mention 6-7 year old) system resources of the 360/PS3... no open world game is going to have the best graphics in this day and age. Linear games that have a lot less to render will almost always have the most impressive graphics, and until a new wave on consoles come out (or games are again developed just for the PC) thats not going to change. I don't mean to rag on console, but lets face it... they are getting old at this point, especially given how fast technology advances.

I believe most of this criticizm stems from PC gamers like myself who just want to know what Skyrim will look like on PC.
For all I care, Skyrim could look like Morrowind on the xbox 360, I need to know what I will get out of it before I can make any judgement.

But Beth has been silent about possible features for the PC (higher resolution and AA, woop-dee-doo), and this uncertainty leads to doubt.
Judging by the gameplay trailer, I'd have to say that Skyrim doesn't look as good as some competitors - but the gameplay itself certainly feels better than anything I have seen. It's brutal, fast and conveys a real connection to your environment.
Skyrim will be awesome.

When it comes to first person games, especially rpgs, graphics greatly help with immersion and they should try to be as good as possible.
If anyone is doubting the power of graphics for immersions, go play Metro 2033 on high/ultra high on a PC.......

The console footage we have seen so far is technically unimpressive, but artistically pleasing. However, there is simply no way Skyrim is going to look much better. This because it has consoles as it's lowest common denominator for hardware. And that is the bottom line.

Its the CryEngine 3 they had to make it way weaker to make it console compatible. Theres a video comparing it to the CryEngine 2 on youtube, i'd link ya but I dont feel like searching for it ;)

I don't understand why people think Skyrim looks bad, I thought it looked really good! I'm sure it will look better on the PC version though

Yeah, I know it's Cry3. I'm sure if Skyrim was PC exclusive, it would look better; however, it's not so we have to deal with the fact that the 360 uses 5 year old hardware.

im not sure many people take into consideration thats its a sand box game, and as i recall Todd said that draw distance will be greatly improved from oblivion. i dont think many PCs could run a crysis engine in an open world game

Evidently not! People seem to forget Skyrim isnt a first person shooter game. I couldnt even imagine the system requiremnts for Crysis if it was an open world game

What games are competing with Skyrim? From what I know there aren't any other open fantasy RPGs coming out soon.
I would like to repeat that while graphical features are great, they're only as good as the artists that make them. Visual art can be made through charcoal, crayon, pencil, paint brush, marble, diamond, and many other media. Some of them are easier to work with than others, but it is still just as possible to make an aesthetically pleasing picture from charcoal as it is with a sharp pencil. As long as the artists know how to work with the hardware that they have, the game should look great.

I am very pleased with how it looks in the trailer, no need to make it different.
I know I will put over a 1000 hours into the game, as opposed to games like Crysis, where maybe I could put in 100 hours.

Thank you! If I wanted a high polygon count I'd but a blueray, or just go outside! Amirite?!

You are 100% correct, gameplay is king.

One gripe with this post. You're comparing an open world rpg with shooters. It would be nice to add layers and layers.of textures and make everything perfect. The reality is that its hard to make a game as big as skyrim look as great as say, halo. In terms of open world rpgs, skyrim will prolly be top notch, though.

Exactly. Skyrim isn't a six hour long ride, it's a vacation to another country.

No. Elder Scrolls games do not need to be the most graphically impressive when they give you thousands of hours of fun gameplay.

As time goes on graphics lose their meaning. But great gameplay lasts forever.
