skyrim nexus for the damn lose

Post » Wed Jul 17, 2013 4:53 am

whats with this entire website all of a sudden.

before it was just you couldnt go back from tab to tab, description - file - image it would bring you back to the whole category section.

now you can do that, or it doesnt keep you in the same category section you were in.

but to alllll of that...

it takes minutes to load each part of the web site you are using just for it to disconnect error 504..

ffs.

Ask them. Also, see the other threads. There's at least one other one. It was made yesterday.

They're having lots of DDoS attacks, cut them some slack mate.

If you can get the page to load - http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/news/340//?

I'd guess activity on their site is spiking right now with the Steam sale going on and they're not really equipped to deal with it.

No, a sustained malicious attack - as linked in B1gBadDaddy's post just above yours.

Not lack of preparation or planning on Skyrim Nexus's part.

A small portion of it is the high activity due to Steam sales, and them so far being unable to implement the server cluster system they want to.

But most of it indeed falls on the DDoS attacks that have been happening over the last few days.

Apparently, the provider that hosts the nexus is dealing with the matter, as it is on their end, though the target of the attacks were the nexus.

Now you are getting the receipt for feeding just one website in the community with mods.

I was just thinking that actually. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the service Nexus provides, but it is a bit of a tragedy that NONE of these community sites has manage to find a way to share monetization benefits.

But before the wave of "modding is a hobby" "you shouldn't expect to benefit from your work" flames, let me just clarify that I personally don't give a flying skeever rump about anything to do with the refusal of the industry to reward modders in any way.

I'd mod regardless. Sure, my incentive to devote precious time to more ambitious projects would be higher if there were some compensation involved to help offset the cost of not becoming homeless, but I expect NOTHING anymore.

Still, I can see where it might be a bone for some vigilante "anonymous" type group to pick. Who knows, maybe the FBI will waste their time investigating ME for merely pointing it out publicly, as if any group actually involved would be stupid enough to do so.

Buy the real culprits some time to cover their tracks! XD

I don't think it has much to do with the Steam sale, unfortunately. The Nexus has weathered many a Steam sale. I wish it were just the Steam sale, because then we would have a firm date for everything to be cleared up.

EDIT: As for supporting other sites, I was hoping Steam itself would provide a good alternative in the Workshop, but it's just not to be with its TOS and filesize limits. TESAlliance is good, but I think the navigation system on the site keeps people away.

The Workshop's TOS isn't the issue people make it out to be. Valve being lazy and posting the same legal boilerplate language into every game doesn't make it stick - they can't override the EULA for Skyrim with that. That language was written when TF2 was the only project in the bin.

The file size limit is a legit beef, but NOT with Valve. Bethesda has to update the CK before that limit will go up. Valve's developers have already confirmed on several occasions that the Workshop itself has a 250MB size limit right now. Might go up as time goes on even.

Arthmoor, I'm aware of your opinion on the TOS from your posts on the Skyrim Nexus. I think you're probably also aware that I don't share it. I also work with IP liability issues every day in my day job. At the very least, uploading "modders' resource" assets created by other people and used by permission, or reusing any content available through a Creative Commons-type license, is a big no-no when uploading to the SW. Arguing that the terms were just an accident on Valve's part and so you didn't really *mean* to agree to them--it may or may not be true, but legally, you DID agree to them.

EDIT: I also think that in a peeing match over this issue between Beth and Valve, Beth would concede to Valve. Valve never really concedes on anything.
