Skyrim Non-Nords Anthropology

Post » Thu Feb 06, 2014 4:17 am

I know there are a lot of people who love Nords and are big fans of Nord culture and tradition, but I am curious what others play as and what they are interested in, culturally, historically, etc.

As cool as they are the Nords are actually one of my least favorite races of Tamriel, in terms of culture and views on the world. Bretons and Imperials I find more engaging as a people, but I have always been interested in Elven society and cultures. Also I really like Orcs. I wish I knew more about Argonians and Khajit as well. My favorite race to study though is the Dwemer, nothing beats them in terms of cool history and fascinating culture. If anyone knows of good sources of materials for more on different cultures and lore, I would love to hear them. Read basically everything off the Imperial Library already.

(Side note, I was a European history major in college with a concentration on military history and a minor in anthropology, so I nerd out on the history and warfare of the races in the elder scrolls a lot...sorry :D )

I suggest going to the lore forums and asking, they could help you out a lot.

edit: Derp I thought you were asking about other cultures and stuff

I've always been a Dunmer fan, I also like how the Cyrodiilic culture was written out to be before Oblivion happened.

Altmer, honestly.

The lore behind their homeland, their culture and history all of it seems very interesting to me.

The dunmer also interest me because I want to know why the chimer turned into them. (I know people say Azura did it but...I'm not to sure..I think it was the messing with lorkhan's heart that did that)

Have you heard of MK? he's a lore master that some people worship.

I probably will make another thread in the lore section, I am posting here because I meant within the context of skyrim. Stuff that has come to mind or been interesting in Skyrim that isn't nord like.

I just recently heard about him myself.

He's got some interesting lore stuff but I was told to take it with a grain of salt.

As for what cultures we learned more about in TESV, I think the Falmer mainly, but Dragonborn DLC added some good stuff for the development of the Dunmer since Red Year. The whole bit about them adjusting to the disappearance of the Tribunal and re-organizing themselves politically.

You really should read the Keyes novels, if you haven't. They add a lot in terms of the development since TES IV, and some general lore stuff about Argonia and Elsweyr. Keyes worked closely with the devs on them.

Also haven't read those, will have to for sure.

The Dragonborn DLC did in fact have some cool stuff, I like the more involved puzzles and yes my nostalgia kicked in with some of the quests which I really enjoyed the connection to morrowind. I think liked it a lot because it wasn't all Viking in my face like it is in Skyrim. Also, much prefer the Skaal to the normal Nord mentality.

You're not the only one that prefers the Skaal. :)

I do enjoy the Dunmer lore, the Dragonborn DLC added a lot of nostalgia from my days back in Morrowind. :)
