Skyrim NPC Relationships: Friendships, Romance, Marriage, Di

Discuss Relationships, Romance, Marriage and Divorce here:

Today's Q&A responses revealed that you can now enter into romance relationships with NPCs in Skyrim and even get married, according to Bruce Nesmith:

7) Will we be able to have relationships with the NPCs, romantic or otherwise?
Bruce: Absolutely! You make friends with people by doing things for them. Friends in the game will treat you differently. Some of them will even agree to go with you into dungeons and on adventures. You can even get married. If you own a house, your spouse will move in with you.

What do you think about this new feature?

  • Will your PC get married?
  • Divorced?
  • Will you remain faithful or perhaps flirt with other NPCs behind your spouse's back?
  • What about if you get thrown in prison, do you think your wife would visit you and bring you a lockpick?
  • How do you think getting married (or getting divorced) will affect Radiant Story quests?

  • Do you think your spouse might get kidnapped by The Horme bandits, for example,
  • If you anger your wife, do you think she might take out a contract on your life?

  • What will happen if you follow your spouse around for a day?
  • Will they continue performing the same daily activities and job schedule they had before marriage?

  • If you marry a baker, or a shopkeeper, would you expect her to behave differently than if you marry a fellow member of the Dark Brotherhood?
  • What if you marry a general in the Rebel army?
  • a bandit?
  • the leader of the Whiterun Witches' Coven?
  • an assistant librarian at the College of Winterhold, who spends all her time cataloging books for the Ysmir Collective?
  • the matriarch or even the Jarl of a clan that rules one of the Nine Holds?

  • What does everyone think this new feature means for modders?

  • Many mods added companions and romance features for Oblivion, but now that there is this framework, does it make this easier for creative modders to implement new quests and stories involving NPC friendships or romance?

"Please just discuss the relationships that may or may not be in the game and steer away from any off topic conversation. We are not discussing real world law or bigotry here, we are discussing what will or will not fit into this game.

In addition I ask that you refrain from expressing your strong opinions about life choices in a way as to offend other members or groups of members of this forum. "

I hope a spouse does something beneficial for you, like work & save up money while you're away. Maybe buy presents for you, or alphabetize your loot. Give us a more tangible reason to keep coming back, as long as they're "happy" with you of course.

New thread, new thread, new thread! :D Ooh, and it has a poll now, lol. Anyway, are going to get back to the beast race debate that was going on? I was quite enjoying that, lol.

I plan on worming my way into a family business, shooting for blacksmithing. Even if I can't own a smithy, if I can get my wife to I can put the blinders on tight enough to pretend we both work it.

...might have to help the old man retire though. :whistling:

I like that a poll was added and with good options too.

I will definitely try to make NPC friendships and will probably see about the romance thing. The specifics are all to be decided when I actually play though. I would not make my character cheat though.

I just want to say this to those who are complaining about Betheseda's decision to implement marriage into Skyrim.

Skyrim is a roleplaying game. In good old Elder Scrolls fashion, you can roleplay almost anything you'd like to be if you have the imagination for it. Now, I think the more choices available for my roleplaying possibilities, the better. So, if I want to roleplay as a spouse, I can.

yes, one of the greatest features of pen-and-paper RPGs was that you really could "go anywhere" and "do anything"? (or at least attempt to do anything)

spouses or love interests provided some interesting stakes for many adventures.

I'm not ashamed to be the only person that said 'no' to all the options.

I wonder if they'll add gay relationships... It's certainly becoming a trend in modern RPG's.

Well you shouldn't be. It is your choice. I am not ashamed to say I will be pursuing both relationships and friendships with npcs. It would be fun to take other characters on trips with you.

Does this really need a 4th thread?

1. Yes, if we want to have a "relationship" thread r/t the fan Q&A that just came out today, we need this because we won't be allowing 10 threads to discuss "relationships" here.
2. If you think there is a reason a thread should not exist, report it and don't post just to questions it's validity since doing so is basically off topic and spam.

Before this game is released we may have who knows how many of these or similar threads as I'm sure it's something folks are going to be talking about. :)

I used to be in favor of romance options, but marriage is so much more and requires so much development time and dedication to produce a good result, I'm not really happy about this. It will eventually look like Harvest Moon where your wife moves into your house and spawns a baby after a while. It will just feel awkward.

Would you be more in favor of it if there is no babymaking?

I'm fully in favor of this new feature, this will be totally awesome!

I don't understand why so many people are complaining about Bethesda adding this into the game...it's optional, So i really don't understand the big deal with it, if you choose not to partake in romance options then how exactly does that effect the game at all? you'll still be able to go out and explore dungeons and talk to npc's, it's just extra content for those of us who really like to roleplay our characters.

A lot of people have complained about Fable or mentioned they are worried about similarities to Fable.

I've never played Fable - can you explain what it is that you are worried about?

I think I will join the Rebels but pursue a romance with the evil leader of the Empire, the beautiful but cold-blooded Wolf Queen of Solitude

Is there a "Professional six Witch" option?
Because that's my ideal choice.
