A Skyrim Oblivion Gate?

Anyone know of any way to update Oblivion Gates (including the creatures) to work on Skyrim?

Yes, but there would be effort involved. Lots of it.

And at the end of it all, what would be the point?

Not to mention that all the meshes, textures, sounds, etc would have to be made from scratch. If you did that, it would be easy to recreate the planes of oblivion. The gates are basically autoload doors, which we now have hardcoded into the engine. :D

Sheridan, some kind of moss covered, ruined and broken oblivion gates spread out across Skyrim (like three at the most maybe) might make for some nice scenery, could also add in an effective sense of time progression from the events of Oblivion.

But as for the assets from Oblivion itself? Orgoglio, it would be a lot of work, and also illegal if you were to just port them over.

No one's denying that. But I think Orgoglio is asking for something else entirely.

I'm thinking about a character creating a gate in his fortress and using it to summon creatures from Oblivion that he can use as an army.

I always thought it would've been cool to have a couple Oblivion gates pop up here and there in Skyrim as another dungeon type. I know we've got dragons to cover what oblivion gates were to Oblivion, but it's still be neat. You don't really encounter Daedra much otherwise. Or at least I haven't.

Maybe, but it would also completely contradict all of the established lore in the universe. By the end of TES IV, Mehrunes Dagon is banished from Mundus and the gates of Oblivion are sealed forever. It would make zero sense if they spontaneously opened again.

Then the gate would snap itself shut within 30-seconds to one minute.

@Op, Oblivion gates were only an option during the short timespan of the oblivion crisis. Before and after the Crisis, gates are incapable of being stable and will automatically close within seconds to minutes. This makes Oblivion gates relatively useless for the work of most conjurers, especially since opening them requires extensive effort. take a look at the book "Liminal Bridges" for how Oblivion gates are made.

In any hypothetical mod, a bad-guy who wanted a daedric army would use conjuration to summon daedra for very long spans of time, or perhaps even permanently. (despite the impression the game mechanics might give you, a summoned creature can last longer than 60 seconds if the proper spells and rituals are used)

I wouldn't mind having a few of the closed gates locations (they persisted after the gate was closed, and even after the Crisis was ended) around Skyrim. It's only been 200 years since the incident, so some should still be around, except on the Vvardenfel Island 9since that erupted and totally destroyed everything).

and yet the lore contradicts this by allowing for dremora to be conjured.
plus you have other daedric princes interfering in mundus all the time...even dagon who was pushed back into his realm 200 years ago. sheogorath made a few portals to the shivering isles etc etc.
i bet they could be re-opened individually if a powerful enough mage were to step in. the amulet of kings and the dragonfires were the conduit, all we need is some sort of substitute. well...the eye of magnus was damned powerful. and its not like powerful mages are in short supply.

Two words: Atronoch Forge. The mage's guild has one in their basemant.

Besides, those Oblivion Gates from TES4 were Daedra breaking the rules. Summoners summoning is allowed, as are mortals wandering through portals to the realm of a mad god.

No, the lore doesn't. Oblivion gates are not the same thing as summoning daedra. Oblivion gates are a specific form of construct created by using a Sigil Stone to punch your way into Oblivion from Mundus. Prior to TES IV, these gates could never be stable and closed within minutes at most. During TES IV, the barriers were weakened so that these gates could exist as stable portals. After TES IV, the status quo is restored, and stable gates cannot exist.

. sheogorath made a few portals to the shivering isles etc etc.
Two-things, the SI portal appeared during the Oblivion Crisis. Secondly, the SI portal did not allow the traffic of Daedra. It was a portal for mortals only. That changes things.
i bet they could be re-opened individually if a powerful enough mage were to step in.
Even if an oblivion gate was "re-opened" it would close shut within minutes.

Yes, in my opinion, it wouldn't be so much lore-friendly, but with a great story it could be made great.
Sometimes lore-friendly is just not mod-friendly :)
What about the the crystal tower of akatosh, heart of lorkhan, or eye of magnus? :D

Crystal Tower was destroyed. The Daedra toppled Crystal-Like-Law during the Oblivion Crisis. In this case though, there's absolutely no reason to not be lore-friendly. You can summon an army of daedra without an oblivion gate, you just need a lot of time on your hands and the human-resources in conjurers to cast the proper spells and perform the proper rituals for permanent or long-lasting summons.

There could still be gates to daedric realms even after the Oblivion Crisis, I imagine, but no "Oblivion gates" in the appearance of a daedric letter O. The liminal barrier being stronger might make it far more difficult, but not impossible. If you take away gates, you can still use Divayth Fyr's method and simply cease to be in the mortal world, and appear somewhere else.

"The Doors of Oblivion" speaks of a few different lesser known gates to certain realms. I'm not sure if any that it mentions would still be functional by the Fourth Era. It mentions none in Skyrim.

The Doors of Oblivion does mention that certain routine avenues into oblivion may exist, but those most likely don't produce their effects through the use of Sigil Stones. Of course, mortals going to and from oblivion is far different than Daedra going to and from Oblivion. Out of the ones mentioned, only the Dreaming Cave on Artaeum could reasonably be used, and Artaeum is not currently accessible. The pillar of Thras and Maelstrom of Bal both bring too significant a risk of death to verify, and the Weir gate leads no further than the ruins of the Battlespire space station.

The Amulet of Kings and the Dragonfires were what kept the Divine Barriers up and stopped Oblivion Gates from opening. The Amulet of Kings and Dragonfires don't exist anymore, so how can the Divine Barriers exist? The lore says that because Dagon was banished, the Oblivion Gates were sealed forever but that contradicts the fact that the Dragonfires were needed to keep Oblivion at bay. Plus the fact that Dagon is now meddling in Mundus again in Skyrim, like the rest of the Princes shows that he is still active. It's not completely impossible to find loop-holes in the lore like that to be able to create such a mod (the Oblivion mod Servant of the Dawn used the explanation that although opening new gates would be a lot more difficult, the power left in the old gates could be used to re-open them. I don't see why this power from Oblivion would dissipate in 200 years, I think it would still be active and could be.)

Just bear in mind though that, while books in-game say one thing, it's not unacceptable for you to contradict those books slightly as long as you come up with a plausible explanation for why this is the case. People who are absolute lore-freaks may get a little bit angry, but I see no problem in it.
